Am I the only one who finds it funny that Spartans wear these massive, metal, armored suits and yet as soon as their shields are down they immediately start taking hits to their health? I mean, wouldn’t it make more sense if the enemy first had to shoot through their armor? Heck, this could even be a cool mechanic in-game. There could be shields which recharge, health that you can replenish with Med-Kits, and armor which stays damaged. So it would look like this on the HUD:
(Shield Bar)
(Armor Integrity Bar)
(Health Bar)
and maybe when the armor is in critical condition, it starts cracking the HUD like in the Lone Wolf mission.
The armor DOES protect them from a whole lotta stuff but the problem is that most weapons, I’m sure, now have some form of Anti-Armor whether it’s melting its way through (plasma) or just punching a hole in it through brute force (ballistics)
I know, I’m not saying they should add it in, but I just find it funny that they wear all this giant metal armor when, in reality, it does next to nothing to protect them. Seriously, in Halo 3, when you shoot them after there shields are down, blood just starts spraying out. I mean, what’s the point of wearing those armor plates if it can’t even stop a few pistol shots? I guess perhaps it actually isn’t meant to protect from gunfire and is only meant to stop Spartans from snapping their own arms as referenced by Halesys journal.

Armor-piercing rounds, likely. The armor also serves to reinforce their augmentations.
Hey! nice topic to bring up, your argument definitely does have pretty good points and I would be all for it becoming a reality in the Halo Franchise, Imagine if 343I had a look at this and actually beta’d it hahah How cool would that be!
But with a good argument comes negatives,
I think what bungie and 343i were trying to achieve was a non-realistic (Obviously) game which in slightly no way could be matched up to any real life situations but anyway Great topic!
For canons sake, the Spartans were made to battle rebels so technically speaking they can take quite a few shots from assault rifles and battle rifles.
The Covenants weapons just rip through the armour because… well… the armour simply wasn’t meant to face Covenant forces.

This is GEN2 MJOLNIR, GEN1 wasn’t build for battle against Covenant, but by GEN2 the Covenant war had came and gone, I’m sure it was built to withstand threats that aren’t homegrown.
Though, yeah, for gameplay? While it’d make SENSE, since multiplayer is canon now…I see no feasible way for an armor rating to work. I’d have hoped 343i thrown around that idea for the new experience Infinity game modes though.
