Hey all,
I want to know if anyone else has the same issue as me. I’ve nearly stopped wasting my time with ranked matches in halo 5 because I never seem to be placed into the proper rank. I only ever bothered with it when I first got the game last year, and I was able to reach onyx fairly easily after being placed into diamond league. I played 10 matches with a friend in one sitting, and I played with better performance in majority of the games than nearly all of the players in the games. However, after the qualifying matches, he was ranked I to onyx and I was ranked into diamond. I didn’t flinch however, as the game was new. Halo has been out for nearly a year now, and I’m still ranked in the incorrect bracket. Apparently platinum is a go to for me (you can check my service record) when in all my matches with platinum players, I easily take MVP ( again check my arena slayer match stats) I played one match with onyx players, and it was probably one of the best matches in terms of player skill involved. I was challenged for once, and had the competitive urge to win in the match since it was neck and neck. But after my qualifying matches, I got placed into plat 6. PLATINUM, even though my performance in my match with Onyx players was in the top half of the game… There is a serious problem with this. I understand difficulty in ranking players in objective based game types since there are so many variables involved to account for, but its basic slayer I’m taking abou . If I win against platinum and diamond players with 22 kills and 7 deaths in a match… Why am I placed into platinum. It doesn’t seem fair and many people are being ranked into onyx for far worse performances after their 10 qualifying matches. Please fix this. I’ve about had it with the ranking system, 10 qualifying matches takes a long time, and its nice to have onyx ratings under my belt for each season. I’m not gonna sit and work every match into a win to rank from platinum to diamond to onyx when I shouldn’t have to.
I just wish the formula was public. Clearly wins are the most important stat but it seems like last month’s ranking has an effect too. What else matters? K/D? Damage dealt? Position on the team? All of the above? None of the above?
there is one explanation for your problem:
RANKS IN HALO 5 ARE BROKEN AS YOINK
I’ve had the same issues since the game released as well. Placed Onyx in SWAT the first season and every season after that I got put in Diamond and in Plat for Slayer and Arena. I’d win all 10 games against, like you, higher ranked people in Diamond, Onyx, and in rare occasions a Champion player but, still get dropped into Platinum. The matching and ranking system is just chaotic that I would only place for the REQ pack and emblem.
This season was probably the weirdest for me by far though. I placed Onyx in Arena when I’ve only placed Plat in every previous season and Diamond in Slayer when again, I’ve only ever placed Platinum. Not sure wtf is going on because in Arena I lost half of my placement games. I basically only play BTB, Infection and WZ now because of how bad the matching and ranking system are. Smurf accounts just ruin the fun even more as well.
Why would a previous season rank play into the rank for the current season!? That’s absolutely absurd in my opinion. Its almost as if the “formula” is just random bogus that just puts a rank with you and from there you move up or down based on WINS only. Objective gametypes are harder to rank players, e.g. CTF, but I’m just talking about slayer here. It shouldn’t be so difficult to rank slayer performance… The objective is straight forward, and if you lead the team in kills while maintaining a good K/D spread, then how is it you’re not performing better than the rest of the team. Definitely needs to be looked into. If halo wants to have a more serious competitive community, then the ranking need to be accurate. Or at least somewhat accurate. Halo 3 was great in that everyone starts at 1 and work their way up the skill levels. I reached 42 in lone wolves and could never budge from that ranking, as it was extremely difficult to pull FFA wins with 5 other players ranking 42. it should be a struggle to get out of your ranking bracket, since technically the players you’re playing against should match your skill.
You ranked onyx because the ranking system was extremely lenient. Hence you getting ranked higher early on. However, one of the main reasons why you arent ranking as high now is because they made the qualification parameters much stricter and each season takes into account your previous seasons rank. You were plat 1 before then you were ranked plat 6,that was a resault of you doing well in your matches however whether or not you win them is also a factor. Once you are ranked the only way to rank up is to win, doesnt matter how well you do in the match, a loss is a loss. Now if you worked your way up to diamond one season then still did well during the placement matches the likely hood you are ranked diamond is much higher.
I agree, I gave it another go and seem to have just wasted my time on the ranked playlists. I too have just been playing warzone and infection haha. Its too stressful being matched with lower skilled people and your team lacks the skills to pull the win! Thank god for infection and grifball and warzone playlists, ranked just never seems to work out

The reason past placement matters is because it wants to place you somewhere close to where you were last season so you can improve on it. As to the slayer complaint, ITS STILL A TEAM GAME MODE. You can carry the team but still lose and guess what, when it comes to a team game a loss is a loss. There is no MVP trophy in this game, its either you win or you lose.
Halo 3 had the issue of accounts being sold which resulted in that entire system becoming a load of bull. You were never guaranteed to play against someone of the same skill level, even with a similar rank. You are also using lone wolves as a comparison which is NOT a team game. That is entirely based on your own personal performance, arena requires decent teamwork to succeed and in a competitive world if you have piss poor teamwork you don’t deserve a higher rank in a team mode.
What’s the point of taking previous season performance into consideration. Its a new season. A fresh start. I’ve only ever struggled in matchmaking when I played a full lobby of champions. Its just strange that, with my performance in my slayer qualifying matches, I’d be ranked at plat 6. Not even diamond. cough should be onyx cough

Slayer is slayer. Every slayer game I’ve played I’ve worked my best towards maintaining the map control and callouts etc. Obviously lone wolves is different from a 4v4 match. But you can’t argue over the fact that the ranking system in halo 5 definitely has issues and should be looked at further, especially when 343 stressed how “halo would bring attention to esports”
Yeah I’m on the same page as y’all. I played my first ten matches with two of my friends. I got a higher KDA then both of them, yet they both placed much higher than I did. I thought the qualifying matches placed you in ranks based off your KDA, but apparently KDAs just dont matter.
Can you rank up into Onyx? I understand the issues you’re having, but can’t you win and rank into Onyx, or am I just dumb?
I would suggest having a read through the matchmaking feedback archives - you can find 2 of them pinned in the MM forums that give links to previous feedback threads. The ranking system and how you place jas been described there in detail a few times. If you still have any questions, feel free to post in the latest pinned feedback thread.
As a last note, please don’t revive old topics thanks
