Arena Problem

Anyone like the whole Power Weapon callout thing in Arena? I love it, don’t get me wrong. But one of the big thing’s about Halo was learning where the weapons were, where they spawned, it feels just so noobish. Like, it felt like luck whenever you saw the amazing Sniper Rifle (or the more amazing) Plasma Caster. (CANT WAIT TO USE IT) What are your thoughts? Think 343i should change the power weapon call outs?

I think it’s better than just magically showing you where the weapons are with a big waypoint from anywhere on the map like with Halo 4, but you’d still need to know where the weapons actually spawn in H5 to get them - callouts or no. Either way, you’d still be fighting for controlling that spawn so the other team can’t get them, so that’s good.

A good team is still going to know where everything spawns and be able to plan around it before the waypoints and callouts appear. And it doesn’t get extended to things like shotgun or overshield, which are important too.

And I personally see it in the same way as Spartan chatter: plugs the communication gap so people know what’s going on when mics aren’t being used.

Luck would be running around a map and coming across an uncontested powerweapon. The 10 second timer callout ensures it’s not luck to randomly come across a PW.

Heavyweapons are on the H2-H3 system where they don’t reappear till the empty one is tossed on the ground. The PW’s function like CE’s where they are on a static timer and always appear no matter what on the same timed intervals.

Honestly, I feel it’s such a minute detail, you’ll just forget about it in the heat of battle.

I sort of agree with you but then again I don’t.
I liked how in previous halos no one really knew when a power wep would spawn
I liked having to check every once in a while for it or even stumbling across it
But in halo 5 it almost creates a little battle for that weapon now that everyone can see it.
I really liked that about the beta. You had to fight for what’s yours! lol

It doesn’t really change anything to have a countdown. Good teams are going to be setting up well ahead of time to grab power weapons. Learning where weapons spawn is not really a meaninful skill when it can easily be learned by loading a solo custom game or a quick forge fly-through.

My concern with waypoints both in H5 and H4 is not the fact that they show locations, but give away when they have been grabbed. Of course its not as if it was wrong to assume the enemy may have a power weapon if you already know no one on your team has it.

Ultimately I think it is both a nice teaching tool for newer, less experienced players that doesn’t have any significant effect on those who already know what they are doing.

I’m definitely cool with having a 3 second delay to removing the waypoint after a PW has been picked so that it’s not known when to throw a 'nade at 1-3 positions due to seeing the weapon icon disappear.

It would take me 1 or 2 matches on a particular map to locate and remember the spawn places…not much of a difference to me

Weapon callouts is a mechanic that will make it easier for new players to get hooked into Halo multiplayer. We get the benefit of potential new players without having to dumb down the game, which is great. Knowing when weapons spawn won’t make anyone better at aiming and learning various Halo arena strategies. But it will make the game more accessible to them.

+1 343i.

I think it’s good, after all, they are the ‘objective’ in slayer, and it helps people focus on them. Benefits new players and takes away some boring mechanical memorization, frees up room for strategy and communication.

All you have to do is look at HCE and static weapon spawns with timers. Noobish? Not in the least. It promotes map control and positioning, while also making those concepts obvious for new players.

The thing is, 343 wants to make it as balanced as possible. Lots of people memorize the weapon spawns and even set up timers. You should NOT have to or be able to do something outside of the game to give you an advantage. When everyone knows where the weapons spawn. then the best man truly wins.

Knowing where weapons spawn is not a skill. It takes 5 minutes in a custom game to figure out where weapons spawn. This system of call outs actually encourages more battles between teams fighting over power weapons because both sides are aware of when they’re spawning.

I disagree with anyone who says that memory isn’t a skill but now you’ll need a different skill. Before even if you had your timer you still had to prepare for someone to time it too. All this means is there are more chances of you meeting someone at that powerweapon spawn.

noobs will be noobs, they will most like camp near the spawn till timer expires. Wait, ambush and pick up the power weapon. Knowing when the sniper comes up doesn’t mean you know how you get the sniper and position yourself to use it.

… And we can use 'nades to bounce a PW to us instead of running into a possible trap.

I don’t mind the timer, just means I don’t have to set my kitchen timers up anymore!

I disagree. Taking luck out of the equation makes it more competitive…

back in in he day, competitive players would rig timers onto their controllers in order to track when power weapons would respawn… This just eliminates the need for that, and ensure that battles will take place to control the weapon spawns when the timers are close to resetting.

when everyone in the match has the same information, skill can determine who gets it, instead of some with a timer or blind luck…

It breaks the stalemate and gets players moving to key locations. Better players will secure them ahead of time and take advantage of the carrot on the stick.

Plus, you can bounce a weapon towards you with a well placed plasma grenade, allowing for more skilled players to gain access to them ala Halo 1.

Its fine.

I think that this will help newer players not to be SoL when playing with people who have higher tenures on the game. This doesn’t change the skill gap though, as you still need to be able to use the weapon effectively after using it, so I believe that it gives a good balance between helping without making it easier to play. The only thing I am slightly concerned about is how long the countdown is shown, It should show that a weapon is inbound, but maybe limit the countdown time to 10-15 seconds, as right now I think its much longer.
