I’ve taken to playing ffa lately with mixed results. I’m gold 4 and usually get a mix of low gold to mid diamond players in my games.
One recent match stuck out, however, where one player essentially lapped the field winning where the 2nd place had about 12-13 kills. The rank I believe was low to mid platinum and the individual racked up 6 or 7 perfect kills. game of their life or onyx in disguise (Smurf)
Likely a new account for a skilled player (aka smurf) or a highly skilled player playing a match under a friend/family account who isn’t nearly as skilled. A simple look at their SR level should be a pretty good clue as to which case it fits. Under the FFA mode I’m told it can take the skill system a little while longer than typical to appropriately adjust (an adjustment w/ confidence) to the range in which a highly skilled player’s MMR (TrueSkill) should be. This is only an issue when they are playing their initial matches under that new account and more so within FFA. In turn, this can lead to their CSR placement being low which looks suspicious and it forces them to grind a significant amount of matches before their CSR properly converges to where their MMR will reach much quicker. In other words, they shouldn’t be able to stomp on players less than their skill level for too long under that account.
EDIT: As Lethal points out below, it is possible that someone simply had things break there way and found a groove that allowed them to put together an outstanding game; though, you should be able to verify that if you so wanted to by checking their history.
More likely a high rank on a new account. But at least it does seem to happen less with the true skill system. But it could have been just a great game by a legit account. It can happen. I have won games by a large margin before, on very rare occasion.
It can happen, I had an onyx 1600 in a lobby and he wiped the floor with the lobby. I was the closest with 12 kills and the rest were still single digits. Being such a low population playlist this happens from time to time.
I guess I should count myself lucky it only happened once. I enjoy the playlist, even if it’s a pure magnum-fest. I hope social rumble pit makes a return in the future with a variety of FFA game types. By future, I mean next game.
Also, getting a wingman medal in FFA was probably the most annoying medal I’ve ever received.

It’s when a high skill rank player starts a new account and plays bad on purpose during placement matches to get a low rank so they can play against, and usually curb stomp, lesser skilled players. Some do it because they are just vindictive like that and some do it because matchmaking for high skilled players can be tough as the population isn’t great. Skill based matchmaking is great when you have a big population to support it but as the population dwindles it can be tough to make matches for certain players.
