Are we supposed to know what an Harvester is?

Title explains pretty well…

In Episode 6 of SO (Chapter 5) Palmer threat the ‘Harvester’ as a well-known…THING, but should we know what that THING is?
I’m pretty sure i would remember something like that if i met it already in my Halo journey…

It seems to be an evolution of the scarab

Are we supposed to know what an harvester means?
OT:what he said.

343 will probably show is in the coming episodes. Its introduction here makes it obvious that the UNSC at least has seen it before.

Some covenant machinery used for digging. I believe they said they were digging for an artifact of some sort.

Whats also puzzling about this thing is that its suppose to be “alive”? The way the Palmer says Harvester means that this isn’t the first time these have been encountered.

Yeah, from the way it’s mentioned casually by Palmer in the intro, (and the radio dialogue from Switchback during Chapter 4) it sounds like a Harvester is common knowledge among the UNSC. I’ve never heard of it before. It’ll be interesting to know exactly what it does. Any ideas?

> It seems to be an evolution of the scarab

scarab is a machine not organic how could it evolve

A Scarab is a huge colony of the worms that form up the body of the Hunters. Just housed in a giant armored walking tank shell.

There is a mention somewhere out there that the one in H2 was more of a utility/ mining Scarab while the ones in H3 are designed for Assault.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who was massive confused haha. I don’t get how they can just throw it at us without any introduction. We don’t even know what it does, only that the covenant/prometheans seemed pretty hell-bent on defending it.

This “Harvester” has received a similar introduction to the Halo 2 Scarab…

Sergeant Johnson: Usually the good Lord works in mysterious ways, but not today. This here is 66 tons of straight-up, HE-spewing, dee-vine intervention. If God is love, then you can call me Cupid!
Marine: What about that Scarab?
Sergeant Johnson: We’ve all run the simulations. They’re tough but they ain’t invincible. Stay with the Master Chief, he’ll know what to do.
Marine: Yes sir, Sergeant!

None of us had even seen a Scarab before much less knew how to effectively take one out, but the narrative introduces it in a way that makes it seem like we’ve all seen it before and know how to handle it.

It was introduced in the Extended Universe, it seems to be a type of semi-organic machine similar to the Scarab’s as it is run partially by Lekgolo worms but is consider more alive than the Scarab, it can be used as a living hive by the Drone species supposedly as well.

It is used mostly as a excavator to dig up Artifacts, and also used to collect fuel for Covenant vessels from the recesses of planets.

It seems to not be exactly the same as a Scarab and is influenced more by Forerunner technology, perhaps the same technology the Knights are inspired by.

What? Where did you get this from?

Was this in Thursday War because I still need to read that.

Does it matter? You don’t always know everything in a story before the final outcome; that’s kind of the point. We will find out what’s going on soon enough.

My thought when I first saw it:

"Looks like a Mass Effect Reaper built by Gears of War Locusts

I know! I was beginning to lose self-esteem over this while playing that chapter. I just kept thinking to myself, “I thought I was a good Halo fan, but I don’t even know what this apparently super important thing is. Shame on me.”

On a similar note, it took me a little while to figure out what the importance of New Phoenix was when they kept mentioning that early on in the season. It wasn’t until I reaplayed the campaign and saw where the Composer’s beam hit that I realized what it meant.

Yeah, where in the extended universe was this introduced? As far as I could find, this was the first mention of it and it just received a casual introduction like the Scarab.

But you see what a Scarab can do. (It had already shot you down in the campaign cutscene.) You know it has a massive laser cannon and learn it’s a walking tank. They don’t show you a deactivated Scarab and assume you can piece together how it works.

I don’t know where the Expanded Universe explanation comes from. I’ve seen references to Blunt Instruments, a story in Halo Evolutions, but it isn’t there.
