Are we still going along with SR 152 Rewards?

I saw a while ago that we would get a Coating and Weapon Skins if we had Spartan Rank 152 in Halo 5. I really hope this isn’t the case because if you have a new game come out and a way to get it is to play another game and get the max rank (Which to my knowledge takes ages to do so [Dude I’m 140 and it’s so slow]) is just not a great way to market a game and a good looking coating for a new instalment of an iconic franchise that is seeming to get back on its feet from what we have seen (In my opinion) If it was a different and an equally as challenging way to get this Coatings in game then I think it’s so much better of a way to make us want to play. It looks nice, so if it was a challenge on the game then I’d probably want to get. If I had to try my hardest to get it, it would be a point of discussion like it used to be in games like Halo 3 and give the player a sense of accomplishment. Instead of keeping it locked behind a different game that some people will get this straight off the bat. It doesn’t seem like it would be good for new players either. It’s a player first mentality and is aimed to please new and old players.

If they haven’t changed it already then please 343, for the love of God do so. I want this but I don’t want to play another game to get it

We are.

Unfortunately you are about 1/4 of the way there, if that.

This reward is for LEGACY players who were dedicated to Halo 5 for the last 5 years. It’s not a challenge for people to start months before Infinite comes out, it’s a huge grind.

There are going to be 1,000s of different skins, coatings and armour combos available. Most players won’t even realise people are using it and only a tiny proportion of players will have it. I’m sure there will be plenty of cool challenge related skins to unlock from just playing the game. The coolest ones will probably be campaign related because that’s how you convince people to buy the campaign/game pass.

Maybe they might make a challenge post launch to obtain it, maybe on the same level as some of the Vidmaster challenges.

It doesn’t really bother me if they get some kind of reward for that. Hitting level 152 is honestly a pretty big accomplishment. Anybody who puts that much time and effort into a game deserves a little something… let alone all that time in effort into Halo 5…

Personally I’m not sure how anybody could even get to 152 in that game without uninstalling it first, so that’s pretty impressive to me. More power to them.

Little things like this are a great way for a dev to show they appreciate their legacy players. It’s like when they originally released the blue flame helmet effect in Reach for those who played on bungies birthday all those years ago. I’ve since lost my Xbox and my old account with it, but it’s a memory I’ll keep forever.

I’m not a fan of legacy rewards. Where do you draw the line? But 152 in Halo 5 is an insane level of commitment. They deserve their tiny slice of pie. And it needs to stay 100% exclusive to them. Forever.

The only scenario I’d back another way to obtain it would be if it became impossible to earn e.g Halo 5 servers shutdown. We knew there would be a reward for 152 for, like, two years? If you only decided to grind now that’s on you. Chances are if you really want it you can continue to grind for however much XP you still need after launch.

I’m not a fan of items becoming permanently unobtainable in the name of exclusivity, but again, so long as it’s obtainable you know what you need to do.

TL;DR: Get grinding, and grind smart.

The reward for H5 152 is not to market Infinite. The reward for H5 152 is to reward the most loyal fans, who played the game the most.

Things like the monster energy skins and the mega blocks skins are to market Infinite. Sometimes a creation is made for no reason other than to reward a small group. That’s what the H5 152 rewards are.

Except that 343 were very clear that it was a small reward… pretty much for those that were already there… and not to start the grind.

In reality I don’t think 343 expected anyone to hit 152. When Halo 5 came out they would have been expecting the next game to come out 2 to 3 years later. How many people were 152 by the end of 2017?

I actually uninstalled it two or three times before I hit 152, shuffling space around for other games (Monster Hunter, Kingdom Hearts…) and usually picked Halo 5 as the one to go more out of burnout than because I disliked it. I actually loved it - along with H2 Anniversary, it was the multiplayer I enjoyed the most. After a while it was the MCC I kicked out, since I transitioned over into full-time playing it on Steam.

I think I got caught on 150 when the Big Burnout finally sank in, and it wouldn’t be another almost year before I came back and finished that up. Can’t remember how long it took though - but I agree with the sentiment others have brought up: This isn’t something they should just toss into a Season Pass a few months after release, and it wasn’t made to ‘market Infinite’ but to reward people who got real far in the game prior to it.

A couple coatings is a small reward. We aren’t talking about an armor set, or an armor effect. They were right when they said it wasn’t something worth grinding for; however, we still had the heads up that there was in fact a reward for hitting 152. People in OP’s position had plenty of time to decide whether or not they were going to grind for it or not, or even to space out the grind to a reasonable pace. Even when the reward became known we still had plenty of time, yet here we are. If someone wanted the reward and wasn’t 152, and didn’t start grinding they can only blame themselves. I wasn’t even halfway when I heard about the reward, yet I bit the bullet and grinded it without even knowing what the reward was. Waiting till last minute and then being bummed that they won’t make it before launch is just silly. The writing was on the wall.

If I recall correctly it was a bit below, or around 1000 people at 152. Last I saw we’re now a bit over 3000 people at 152. So long as the method of acquiring the reward is available I have not problems with leaving things as they are. If someone wants the reward they can grind like everyone else did. I don’t think whether it was grinded before, or after launch should matter. In my mind as long as they met the same criteria everyone else did they should receive it as well.

I don’t care about people getting a special skin for a monumental accomplishment. I love the legacy rewards. It’s a great way of bringing new players into the deeper aspects of the franchise. It also rewards long time players for remaining engaged with the franchise. I loved helioskrill and its unlock requirement, though IIRC they had a variant which you could get as a req which I hated.

I’m hoping they have a LASO reward for all games cleared.

that be the worst decision they could make.

I’d also love to have some legacy reward pulled from the MCC aswell as H5 152.

Perhaps for the LASO runs like you suggest, or for completing the whole set of 700 achievements, or the old vidmasters. Anything to that effect would be really cool in my opinion.

Honestly by the time the halo 5 servers shut down the 152 rewards won’t matter because infinite will be long dead. Only now are the legacy halo games sunsetting and that’s after what, 10-15 years?

I understand the frustration but not giving players who were dedicated to Halo 5 will anger a lot of people, especially with how grindy it is. I would personally be pretty upset if we didn’t get a reward at all or if the current one’s they’ve announced are made available to players who didn’t not reach rank 152.

It’s also something of an apology for the fact that reaching 152 will give you nothing in H5 honestly so that’s a good thing.
I do hope we get some clarity on legacy rewards to be able to work a bit towards them because let’s be honest, when infinite arrives who will spend their precious time farming the older games instead of enjoying the new one?

In my opinion these legacy rewards are a great thing and don’t mind that not everyone will have them. It’s a reward for the way you enjoyed playing the game and being able to project that. And within a few weeks probably people already are using something else because of all cosmetics available

Yeah I think this too haha. There’s going to be so many options people will surely end up wanting to use something else. Personally I’m going to have either a really plain Spartan or an outrageous over the top one, there is no in between for me.

Instead of begging for them to take away an exclusive reward for people, just focus on what other possible coatings will be coming. Within a month of launch, there will likely be more armor coatings than anyone knows what to do with, and a lot of people are going to feel silly about obsessing over Watchdog.

I personally didn’t get 152 JUST for the coatings, but it was a good enough reason to jump back in and finish out what I wanted to do in Halo 5. Between January and June I managed to get 35 million XP, and if it was that important pretty much anyone could have done the same (or even started at zero and got all 50 million XP).

Here is the Watch Dog armor coating which is the reward for achieving SR 152 in Halo 5: Guardians.

This has been confirmed since December 2020’s Inside Infinite.
