Ok, flashback to Halo 3 ODST. It’s main premise was to SURVIVE, opposed to getting the highest score. I have fond memories of defending against the endless waves of enemies with each round getting progressively harder. The player knew what to expect for, the waves progressed the same for each play through. But Bungie created a nice balance between randomness and the expected by implementing the skulls system, which added a twist to each set. As with WZFF, I feel that it is a jumbled mess compared to ODST’s version.
In short the first firefight was the best firefight because of its stress on survival.
EDIT: LIVES!!!
YES, I completely forgot to talk about LIVES. This gives the player the incentive to not just run out there like a headless chicken!!! (which is way too common of a sight in WZFF)
EDIT TWO: Coexistence
Yeah I do believe there is potential in WZFF but I also think that it shouldn’t completely replace the old school firefight (because i do believe that classic firefight still has a large following). In reality they’re bother very different modes and both have their pros and cons. For the future, I’d like to see 343 make more of a survival based firefight that could maybe coexist with the WZFF.

Yeah, I suppose. I know 343 wanted to a remix of what bungie created, but i just can’t help but think that WZFF is lackluster to ODST. Perhaps some patches on major issues will change my thoughts it

Reach firefight was incredible, you could customize everything about it, it was by far the best firefight to date, the matchmaking version that was offered was very arcadey but that was for just going crazy with randoms, you could easily replicate the odst style firefight and challenge yourself whenever you wanted, solo or with friends.
Well, ODST was just a score attack survival mode. 343 seems to be looking more toward Reach to create Warzone Firefight in H5. They didn’t exactly hit the nail on the head, but hopefully they can tweak things to make it easier to find enemies (with some sort of indicator, I can’t stand when I’m trying to kill crawlers and there are none to be found), or allow you time to get to a bunker to defend it (rather than starting the timer and spawning enemies right outside, meanwhile you’re just now spawning into the level).
BUUUUT
It’s a good start, I will say that.
The (understandable) mistake a lot of people are making is thinking this is a Firefight mode.
This is Warzone PvE, not Firefight. The “Firefight” part of the name was added to it for the sake of marketing.
Also don’t get me wrong, the community was begging for a PvE Warzone mode since after launch, and I’m very happy with WZFF and wouldn’t be that much more pleased if an actual Firefight mode were done instead.

They shouldn’t have used the “Firefight” to mislead people then. Maybe Warzone Survival?
No wait, you don’t need to survive, because unlimited lives and stuff… Warzone Speedrun? Warzone Rounds? Warzone Call-In-All-Your-REQs? Warzone Sponge?
You can’t have lives in an online setting because players would quit out as soon as they were out of them. They quit out now when waiting for that lame respawn time.

This. The new firefight has lots of potential and really fits in well with the Halo 5 set up, however, it needs lots of tweaks/changes to make it better.
My issue with lives would be idiots rushing out and getting killed over and over meaning, no matter how careful you are, you face running out of lives for the bosses/harder rounds through no fault of your own.

I think a lot of people forget that Halo Reach Matchmaking had Firefight; it was unlimited lives, but with a long time limit and the goal was to see how far you can go. Then they had silly versions where you spawn with Fuel Rods and stuff.
Point is, there’s ways to do this without making you wait to respawn longer than playing. Not to mention the AI needs a serious tweak.

Yeah perhaps the timer system fits best with WZFF, but as for the future I really do hope there is some sort of survival aspect to firefight. Maybe a a different mode entirely.
The thing is odst never is a root to go off of cuz reach didn’t follow off it, h5 hasn’t followed off it.generally when people say games go back to their “roots”, their established formulas, and odst was never established simply cuz no other game repeated what it did. H1-3 all play pretty much the same, if h6 were to play like those, then it would truly be going back to an established formula. im still amazed why people preferred odst or reach anyways, it was so easy to find a choke point and camp it for hours upon hours cuz of dumb A.I. H5 continues the trend however since it has large -Yoink- maps white A.I. Spread out with a timer, we can’t necessarily camp it out anymore. People say h5s version is boring but id like to know how sitting in a spot for 5 hours in odst isn’t boring or repetitive.

I liked the reach firefight the best simply because of how customizable it was. It could be as hard or easy as you wanted it.

That’s like calling a game “Halo” when it plays nothing like Halo.
