i’ve been unable to actually tell if we’re allowed to or not. it doesn’t even improve my ping, just makes it so i can actually find matches because otherwise it’s completely dead. are we allowed to or not?
I don’t see a reason why we shouldn’t. All a VPN does is fake your real location. Like you said it doesn’t provide a better network connection.
If anything, it puts you at a disadvantage since you’re matching with people not in the same country as yourself, if I’m correct in assuming you’re not in NA. I’ve heard the game is close to dead in other countries.
It’s fine in the UK too.
yup not NA, (new zealand) and the hours I can play at most days are virtually a ghost town. the ping itself doesnt actually bother me since I’m used to playing at around 175-220ms anyway.
just didn’t want to get in trouble if it wasn’t allowed, but hopefully it improves today because of season 2.
As long as the VPN doesn’t restrict which servers you can connect to and rather only tells the matchmaking that you are from another region based on the IP address this should not be a problem.
The issue with geo-blocking was that it interacted with the matchmaking system in such a way that more people went into high ping matches than would have otherwise been the case. And another issue was that quite many people were doing it (one person alone would probably not even show up in their stats).
If many people from your region were doing it however it might lead to or exacerbate the issue you’re seeing - lack of regional population (because the matchmaking system would associate all those players with another region). Just something to keep in mind.
Depends where you are and platform you are using.
Edit: Tried using XBox in SXM using a US location, while on vacation. MS defaulted to NL, locking me out of certain services.
