Are Video Games ruining the generation?

It’s a article I’ve found on CNN website couple of hours ago. What’s your overall thoughts? http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/23/health/living-well/demise-of-guys/index.html I’m sorry, I made an mistake of putting “Is” in the title of the topic forum.

As a male gamer(and viewer of… well you know) I am offended!

To answer your question, it’s not the VG’s or -Yoink- doing the ruining, it’s the internet because it’s “are” not “is” when using plural.

What do you expect from CNN news, They babble about anything that will get views LOL! Why do you think CNN stands for
Corrupt NEWS Network! O.O

Let them have their shenanigans.

I don’t watch CCN so I did not see the story. But I think out of control gaming is symptom of other things not the source. Because you have to choose to sit around abuse something to a fault, and you have to choose to fix it too.

But from what I’ve seen most people have a decent respect for reality. They still go to school, have a job, go to church or whatever they just like gaming as a hobby which means they enjoy it and put a lot of thought into it.

I might not be the best example, though. Sometimes while I’m working, all I can think about getting to play Halo again especially now that I’ve gone Gold and can play online. Well that and watching Anime.

Ok first of all it would be Are video games not is, but no video games are not ruining this generation people just need to learn what moderation is.

No they are not. CNN also said the economy is getting better and that happy days are back. I won’t go into politics for a million reasons, but they aren’t the most trustful news channel. Try electronics are ruining the generation. Everyone has to have the iPad after the last one released 6 months ago, almost like COD.

What the -Yoink- did I just read? They have no idea what they are talking about. Video games are a hobby, like anything else. While I can get very competitive when I play video games, it doesn’t take over my life. It didn’t take over my life when I was single and it certainly hasn’t now that I am engaged. I went to school, I have a full-time job, I own a car, and I have a fiancée.

However I do believe that -Yoink- is just bad. It creates unreal expectations in the minds of people.

> Similarly, video games also go wrong when the person playing them is desensitized to reality and real-life interactions with others.

What? If anything, video games are giving people opportunities to solve problems and find ways to work around issues. Since when do games desensitize you to killing someone? There will always be crazy, stupid people in the world, and judging society off of them is the completely wrong way to go about it.

> Given the opportunity, both adults and children were more aggressive after playing violent games.

I never have the urge to pick up my sword and go out on the streets after playing Halo. I don’t have the urge to go out and shoot something. I don’t have the urge to run over pedestrians after playing GTA. That doesn’t make any sense. It’s just a cop-out.

Video games don’t make people go out and fight someone. It is the poor parenting in this day and age that is to blame. Parents are not allowed to punish their children anymore because it is “child abuse”. While there is a line between punishment and outright abuse, parents need to be able to actually discipline their children if they do something bad, like lie, steal, swear, punch, kick, etc.

I always have viewed video games as comparable to fast food. Eating fast food once and awhile is not going to kill you. But if it becomes your primary diet in life, its going to cause health issues. This applies to everything, moderation is key, extremes result in damaging effects within any activities. Using the example within the article of 50 hours of WoW, there isn’t really many things that you can do for 50 hours that’s good for you.

If they can’t tell the difference between reality and video games, they have problems. That murderer wasn’t pushed into that because of video games (at least, only partially). He obviously had mental problems if he couldn’t tell between life and games.

I can’t trust the media anymore, I lost faith with them years ago.

You have just stated almost exactly what came to mind when I was reading that article.

It was an interesting read, but not entirely accurate. There are people out there that spend their lives on Video games, but most of the people I have met who play video games are pretty well adjusted people.

Also, I don’t see any evidence or statistics backing up the assertions in the article.

There are some people who are successful and plays video games, I got a scholarship last year for example, and I played Halo for most of my life. But thats not with everyone.

Can you really get addicted to video games?
I mean i play alot of Halo, and if anyone should try and stop me i may commit bloody murder.
I also get terrible shakes and become socially difficult to aproach and highly abusive.
But can you really get addicted to video games?

I view the media saying video games are the reason why people go on murdering sprees and are desensitized to be the equivalent of this. Sure, it’s easy to blame video games but there are so many other reasons people do what they do…

Ω

Actually for me its quite the opposite, I’ve always played games to blow off steam and relax.

Far more heinous and atrocious acts were committed before the age of electronic entertainment. Just the World Wars alone have taken more lives in a day then 35 years of gaming have ever resulted in, never mind the endless horrible acts committed on a daily basis where nobody has an XboX.

If anything, video games give us an outlet for what lurks inside of all of us. We are after all, just really intelligent and industrious savage animals.

I play games alot, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to go out and going to kill people just because I do it in games. In fact I play games to escape from reality and let my imagination run wild. Also those kids are holding N64 controllers wrong…

Oh God this issue again. No Video Games and “p-word” are not ruining guys. Are we being ruined as a whole? Yeah, no doubt. But not because of games and -Yoink-.

Your parents had “p-word” and games back then, too. It was called Playboy and Atari. But still had time for everything else.

…If you know what I mean.
