Am I going crazy, or is every member of Red Team wearing Mk Vl in their Blitz card?
Looking at Douglas’s card, I can certainly see how it might seem like Mark VI. However, going on the size of the shoulder pads, I’m pretty sure it’s still Mark IV.
From my experience with Halo and its lore, doesn’t the Mark IV Spartan Super Soldier Combat System cost the equivalent to a Deep Space Combat Naval Vessel such as the spirit of fire? On top of that, how all powerful it is supposed to be, the Spartans in this game just get ran over by little to no units. Aren’t they supposed to be the best of the best that the UNSC has to offer? Sounds like a bloated wasteful way of spending the Military budget. Instead imagine, that instead of every spartan that was built, imagine a ship like the spirit of fire taking its place. There would literally be hundreds if not thousands of SoF’s, if that were the case, the UNSC would have had the same size if not larger armada of vessels than the Covenant. Hypothetically, the fall of Reach would have never happened, allowing the UNSC to competitively and effectively challenge the Covenant.
well, we have seen many times 1 Spartan takes down a whole Covenant ship. That’s enough to justify the cause.

Militarily you need different ships to fill different roles, otherwise you will end up getting dunked on. The Spartans were special forces. They justify the special armor. The SoF is a repurposed Phoenix class colony ship. Spartan armor was said to cost as much as a Destroyer like the Midnight. Gameplay doesn’t reflect lore. This is also off topic*

Its technically on topic and a good subject. We’re backing up the fact that a Spartan should be way more powerful than it is mediocrelly portrayed in this game. I’m positive that one spartan is stronger than 5 or 10 squads of grunts.
You also just solidified my statement that spartans cost as much as a Destroyer but are no where even capable of what a destroyer is.
So all in all, Spartans need a dramatic buff.

Destroyers and Spartans have different roles.
This like comparing your tank division to your marines. Not that I disagree or anything

Theoretically, they have the same roles. To destroy the Covenant, and win the war for the UNSC. As for which one is better fit for that role, I would have to say the Destroyer. As of right now Spartans are too under-powered to compete competitively.

A single Spartan brought down an entire Covenant armada and saved the galaxy equipped with just his suit, his guns, and Ann AI.
The average UNSC ship can’t even go 1-1 with the smaller Covenant ships. They would need 3-1 to have a chance. Spirit survived because plot armor.
But that’s not gameplay or Halo Wars 2. Spartans do need a buff, we agree, though this discussion is more stemming from a lore strategy/spending issue. Problem with Spartans was that they almost always won on the ground and could rarely take it to space.
If you read the phoenix logs on the Spartans it says its a mixture likely their old Mk IV and Mk VI.
but what really it means by cost some credits or similar? Id say that the more important part is that it takes less time and resources to make.
its effectivity in combat has been seen before though.

I haven’t read any novels in years, and stopped shortly after Ghosts of Onyx, but that price is ridiculous. I know Halo isn’t grounded in realism, but that is still obscenely expensive. 1 suit costing as much as an FTL capable colony ship… Who makes up this lore?

Haha, I’m right with you, yes the price is ridiculous considering the return on investment. I’m quite sure the UNSC would have got way more out of spamming Destroyers, instead of Spartans. The price tag of a spartan should at least mean its capable of devastating military action. As far as I know, Master Chief is really the only shining main example of what Spartans could be capable of. They are just so under-powered for costing billions of dollars and requiring so much to go right just to create one. When all you would do is spam build destroyers and just overwhelm the Covenant, similar to what the United States did to Germany in WWII. 1 Tiger tank could take out 3 or more Sherman tanks. So to fix that we literally mass produced Shermans to simply overwhelm the superior Tigers. Producing 10 Sherman tanks as fast as Germany could build 1 tiger tank. It’s the same concept.
Back to the OP, Spartans are so underpowered compared to their brute counter parts. 1v1, a spartan will lose everytime to a banished leader. Considering how much praise Spartans have been given, and how the whole Halo story is partly built on spartans being humanities greatest weapon, these spartans should be able to withstand more than just a few grunt squads being thrown at them.
Douglas’s armor was damaged so he might have gotten some mark VI pieces

Alright, I’m gonna try and see if I can hit all points here (including the OP).
First and foremost, you must remember that the Spartan II project was initiated BEFORE first contact with the Covenant. The UNSC was at war with the Insurrectionist in a war that had claimed over a million lives. The issues they were having weren’t space based, they were actually a dominating force in Space Combat at the time, they didn’t need more ships. It was taking out the enemies leadership. The UNSC realized that a MAC blast from orbit into a capital city of some Outer Colony world wasn’t going to work. They needed to win hearts and minds as well, so blowing up thousands of civilians to get one guy wasn’t really an option. So, enter the Spartan II project. Genetically enhanced super soldiers that could be inserted into the most hostile environments and complete missions with near, if not 100% success rates.
The original Mark IV was designed during this time, but was not put into action until shortly after first contact with the Covenant. This variant did NOT and I repeat, NOT have shielding equipped. Designing Mark IV was pricey, but not Destroyer levels of expensive. Later in the war, after time had been spent fighting the Covenant, the UNSC figured out how to adapt Shield Technology, however, they couldn’t get it to work on something as large as a ship, so, enter Mark V. This is where the price tag gets hiked up and we start seeing those Destroyer level numbers on the pricing, which, if memory serves correctly, does come up in one of the novels. However at this point the UNSC is already backed against the wall. They were never going to be capable of drowning the Covenant in numbers. Realistically, the Covenant had the superior numbers AND ships, they just never really needed to use the numbers.
As for effective Spartan II team you need to look toward the extended universe. Blue Team, Red Team, Black Team and Grey Team are all examples of highly successful Spartan Teams. From a Game play perspective you need to realize that Spartans are supposed to be used less as infantry and more as a vehicle enhancement. You’re supposed to put them in a Tank or a Vulture (if you can in HW2, I don’t remember), otherwise you’re not utilizing their full potential.
Finally, to wrap it back to the OP, the ongoing theory is that Red Team is wearing a mismatched collection of Armor scavenged from the ark. Canonically, the Mark IV they started in does not have shields, but for Game play purposes they were added. Post first contact with Atriox it’s anyone’s guess. Douglas does manage to get his Armor Repaired and a new helmet, so I’d have to imagine there are some resources available to them on the Ark.
Mm I could be wrong, but I only remember them mentioning Mjolnir (gen 1) being the equivalent to a small starship in cost. That likely refers to something along the lines of a longsword at least and a corvette (probably more so a tug or freighter) at most.
The Spartans were created specifically to stop the rebels before the Covenant even came into the picture. They didn’t need Longswords to accomplish this task, but special forces troops.
In any case, even a ship like a Destroyer was barely capable of going toe-to-toe with a small covenant ship. Meanwhile a small group of Spartans destroyed the Unyielding Hierophant and over 500 Covenant ships which would have destroyed Earth with little effort. As far as I’m concerned they’re worth 1500 UNSC ships at that point (UNSC only won when they outnumbered the Covenant 3 to 1, even then being almost decimated).

To decimate means to reduce by 1/10th. To say “even then suffering heavy losses” would be more appropriate.

That’s one of many definitions and meanings to the word, like many words they usually have multiple definitions. It also means to cause great destruction, reduce drastically in number, destroy a large percentage of, etc.
Not sure why you’d nitpick in such a way and derail though.

Because this is Waypoint and it is my duty.
If I remember the canon fodder article correctly, they were able to start integrating Mjolnir equipment left over from the UNSC presence on the ark once Isabel came aboard, accounting for the shields, thrusters (you can see those at work during missions with Alice. She sometimes does an aerial finisher on infantry) and mixture of Mark IV and VI aesthetics
