The basis of this question comes from the “Looking Glassed” Canon Fodder, since it mentions that the Reach Platforms are some of the strongest built, while implying (to me) that Reach had it’s own model of Orbital Defense Platforms.
Now, specifically speaking are the Orbital Defense Platforms the same models as Reach’s, the ones with the Mk V Super MAC that fires 3000 ton slugs at point-four-tenths the speed of light* or are the Earth Platforms different models with different MACs and slugs?
*quoting my Definitive edition TFoR Copy page 320 for its velocity and slug mass.
I’m not sure.
In all visual representations that I have seen of the ones at Reach, they look like the ones at Earth that appeared in H2. That said, this was probably just done so that you could recognise what they are at a glance. I think they’re the same models, or it’s assumed that they are
Halopedia’s Cairo Station page (Cairo Station - Campaign level - Halo 2 - Halopedia, the Halo wiki) links to Orbital defense platform - Ship class - Halopedia, the Halo wiki , which covers the ones at Reach and Earth and doesn’t specify different models.
I believe both earth and reach used the same odp model while some other conlonies used more cost effective models. On a different note I would love to get the full list of ships at earth during the second battle. We know of three separate battle groups that were there and we know they had an orbital network of 100 clusters of three odp’s. I have always felt that the earth defence fleet was numbered at around 500 ships.
I’m sure that I heard somewhere that they are different, with the Reach ODPs being more powerful. I think it could be stated in the Halo Flet Battles ODP set, but seeing as I don’t have it I can’t be sure.

I have to disagree with the 500 ships figure. If the UNSC could muster that kind of force, Reach would have had at least two hundred ships. Some of the best ships in the navy were lost at Reach, namely the UNSC Trafalgar, and most of the roughly 150 ships were destroyed. Another 500 makes the fleet at Reach seem small, and I don’t believe the UNSC would leave Reach with anything but the best protection.

I know TFoR Comic adaptation shows the ODP that looks like the H2 ODP is stationed at reach, but then what of the MAC gun and it’s ammo and velocity?
It would be quite odd logically to not have the most powerful MACs at the last place you want the covenant to find, Earth. Even if there are 300 of them, having 300 of those with MkV SMACs would be the best idea to have instead of a weaker model of MAC. I mean, it’s Earth.

Agreed, I’m pretty sure they’re the same

Exactly, while reach was the head military world of humanity, id wager they’d be more protective over earth, with it being the birthplace.
Imagine the morale humanity would lose of the covenant destroyed earth.

To my recollection, the ship count was actually quite high. Humanity had en massed the largest fleet to defend earth. Keep in mind the majority of the fleet was frigates, with a few cruisers and other ships thrown in.

You’ve also got to remember earth had a month to prepare while each had a few hours. There were only a few colonized systems in range of reach to offer any support while nearly all of the remaining colonies that were not engaged in active combat would be able to offer support to earth.
The I do set reads the following “Magnetic Accelerator Cannons of unsurpassed lethality were used to defend the planet of Reach. These devastating orbital defence platforms will add a new element to the game of Halo: Fleet Battles in the form of fixed fortifications that form defensive lynchpins behind which players can rally their fleet. A cool feature of these models is that it can be mounted both horizontally and vertically.” the unsurpassed lethality might relate to number of kill or that there were no models that surpassed them. If it’s the latter earth could very well have had the same models.
Would love to get some official 343 response to this…

Good points. I’d forgotten that Earth knew the Covenant had found it, it would make sense to have such a large defence fleet.
Yeah that’s what I was talking about, I’d heard someone quote it on here before. I guess it could be either, and I’m pretty sure Earth would have equal if not superior ODPs to Reach. I wonder if there was a massive ground battle at the generators on Earth, might be an interesting battle to hear about.
As far as I am aware the Earth ODP network aside from having hundreds of guns also were more powerful systems as well when compared to the ones over Reach. So while the structurally were the same the gun had a higher kinetic output so they could engage ships at longer range and hole even the largest of Covenant ships.

Cleveland, actually. Which was initiated by Col. Ackerson to ensure it wasn’t destroyed.
There were mentions of a few other skirmishes as well. Blue Team stopped an assault in Antartica, and something happened in Seattle if I remember right. Also Brutes took over the Cuban Space Elevator.

Yeah, but other than Antarctica they all seem like unlikely places for the ODP generators. We know for sure they weren’t in Cleveland or Cuba, and it seems as though they would be a large target for Covenant invaders. Of course, that’s assuming they were all packed together like on Reach, it could be that there was a generator underneath each battle cluster, which would make it harder for the Covenant to target them.

Yep your right it was cleveland. There was also a battle on the ocean floor.
Ya I think it is safe to say that Earth’s ODPs were the same or at least as strong as Reach’s ODPs.
Johnson in the Halo 2 campaign says one ODP can put a clean round through a Covenant capital ship.
One very good example is in the comic Halo: Uprising when they ODP Nassau station had obliterated the CCS-Class Battlecruiser Harbinger of Piety in one hit.

Yeah, there weren’t any groundside generators for the ODPs at Earth. Each station was its own self-contained space station and weapon system. The attacks on the ground were after other things. Hence why the Covenant had to board them to punch a hole for the carriers.
Maybe yes, they had to find another place to trained the ODST, of course is not earth but many of them were trained there and another planets to secure new ODST joining to the battle.

Some of the best ships in the navy were lost at Reach, namely the UNSC Trafalgar, and most of the roughly 150 ships were destroyed. Another 500 makes the fleet at Reach seem small, and I don’t believe the UNSC would leave Reach with anything but the best protection.

A cool feature of these models is that it can be mounted both horizontally and vertically.” the unsurpassed lethality might relate to number of kill or that there were no models that surpassed them. If it’s the latter earth could very well have had the same models.

I wonder if there was a massive ground battle at the generators on Earth, might be an interesting battle to hear about.

That makes sense. If there were generators, they’d be priority one for the Covenant. Do we know if the lack of ground generators affected the Earth ODPs at all?

On a different note I would love to get the full list of ships at earth during the second battle. We know of three separate battle groups that were there and we know they had an orbital network of 100 clusters of three odp’s. I have always felt that the earth defence fleet was numbered at around 500 ships.

Dont think so. Cairo obviously had enough juice to one-shot anything short of the carriers themselves.
