Are the Map packs only free for the first year?

In a gamespot interview, one of their questions included the phrase “You’re taking a unique approach to DLC by offering all maps free for the first year**”**.
People can interpret it as the maps would only be free for a year, and they have judging by the comments. After a quick google search there’s nothing that popped up suggesting that this is a new policy that recently surfaced, so I believe gs simply meant the dlc released in the first year would be free forever. But just to be sure, has anyone else heard otherwise?

Yeah; first year only*.

*As of now, this could change depending on how successful the REQ system is.

They seem to be testing the waters with microtransactions. I would imagine if they make a good enough profit future DLC would also be free. If the idea flops they will probably go back to a more traditional method.

I highly doubt they’d offer it for free, than make people start paying for it. Just seems like a really bad idea.

I don’t think micro-transactions will work very well for them becuase people are just going to earn REQs. So to make money after the first year they will probably charge people for DLC. However after a year I will just be playing Halo Wars 2.

Nah it’ll be free for the entirety of H5s lifespan. If not then 343 will be going back on one if the biggest things they are bragging about.

I think they mean they might offer additional PAID dlc after the first year.

But all DLC released during the first year is free.

Dude probably misspoke again.

This, the 18+ maps released in the year after launch are free, but they might make more after that.

I doubt they will even be making maps for halo 5 after a year… you know… because they will be busy making halo 6.

Yeah, 18+ maps is plenty. And new content gets made by the forging community anyway

They have been saying they don’t want to split the community with paid DLC. I think this is awesome as I never bought any of the DLC in reach, h3 or h4( hated h4 MP and quit after two hours of playing it) I’ve always thought paying for extras has been a waste of money. I did purchase the DLC that was presented in H2 but that was because you wanted to fit in with everyone else when the map packs were released LOL

To add map packs after a year that cost money would go against 343i’s current philosophy that the community needs to stay united which is why they’ve offered free DLC in the first place. This game is expected to sell pretty well, with multiple versions, and some people like me will be buying REQ packs anyways since they’re fairly cheap and it helps 343i in their bold decision to include free DLC.

That would be hypocritical considering their reasoning for making them free in the first place.

I’m sure they won’t. Can imagine new players going ham on req packs. I personally think the micro transactions will be successful, meaning free dlc.

One year only seems about right

I think it’s more a case of, after the first year future dlc plans depend on how profitable the micro system is. Not a lot of games get DLC after the first year.

Basically, if they still making money on it in a year, we’ll still be getting more stuff for free. If they’re not making as much money, they’ll probably play around with their micro model and scale back the amount of content they’re putting out.

That’s entirely dependant of each individual. When it’s going to take 5 or more 20+ minute warzone games to earn enough REQ for a single gold pack… That’s kind of daunting for individuals who want to keep up with everyone else but have to work 40+ hour work weeks and raise a family at the same time. My salary averages out to be ~$32 an hour, so it’s not a difficult decision for me to make to buy packs as opposed to grinding what little free time I have these days.

Granted my situation is more to one extreme of the spectrum, but I’m sure plenty of other people can relate to a few facets of my situation.

they don’t want to have the people that actually buy DLC to not have people to play with and be forced to play the base maps over and over again not being able to play on the maps they bought (Halo 4) so they decided to make maps free and go with a micro transactions system which i don’t mind too much seeing as you don’t actually have to “buy” anything to win games you’re more or less paying for a convenience of having the the things you want unlock faster. after the first year they might do something else like have DLC packs for armor specifically that you can’t get in regular req packs

I mean, not really. they only promised 15 free maps at first, and now they added one launch map and 3 more free DLC maps minimum. IF each map pack is 3 maps and they release one a month then that’s only half a year of content. That’s still an amazing amount, but they could still charge for maps after that point and have kept their promise.
