After Halo 5, they don’t seem all that capable of holding onto anything, and their fight against the Arbiter completely shifted back at them. Now the Prometheans seem to be a more capable and relentless faction than our old alien buddies are. I’m genuinely worried that the same epic battles against the Old Empire won’t be present in Halo 6.
The gameplay won’t change fighting against the Covenant. But the “Old Empire” hasn’t existed since before Halo 4. All Covenant after Truth’s death have been splinter factions.
I’m sure we’ll still fight against non humans in h6. I wouldn’t be so quick to call them Covenant though. CE is gone and many spliter groups have collapsed have been defeated
I think that there is the Created to worry about. Then again, Cortana could convince some covenant fractions to follow her seeing how she is in control of the guardians.

I’m pretty sure this is exactly what will happen. Many of the Covenant factions still worship the Forerunners, and Cortana now has control of a great sea of their technology, is in their greatest repository of information, and could easily appear Forerunner to those who aren’t familiar with her.
I personally hope we are done with the covenant with Sali Nyon being killed and his faction destroyed in Halo Wars 2.

I don’t thing we’ll see Sali 'Nyon…IMO Halo Wars 2 is settled between '31 and '57

I would have to agree with this.

Sali Nyon is one of HUNDREDS of covenant factions lead by different leaders. Also their is still a lot of covenant forces out there that if they all united instead of continued to fight each other, could probably destroy earth.
I’m sure if we defeat 'Nyon’s Covenant in H6, they’ll just dig up another zealous Sangheili and reboot it again… one who won’t have nearly as established and interesting a backstory as Jul already did.
343 might be itching to release a fully Covenant-free Halo but I have doubts they’ll ever actually do it.

She looks Forerunner PERIOD. We all saw the “Eld” broach-thing she has on now. She’s claimed the Mantle for herself.
In the mission Blue Team, when John and his squad decide to scuttle Argent Moon, you can hear Kelly make reference to “A few thousand to 1”, while Linda then mentioned it was about “half the covenant fleet”. If Cortana is planning on using the Guardians to disable both UNSC and Covenant Remnant assets, I’m not entirely sure that means the CR will be on the best of terms with her. After all, their goal is to aggressively expand, fight the humans, etc. which isn’t what Cortana wants at all. I don’t believe she will be commanding both Prometheans AND Covenant at us, would she? I predict we’ll fight the covenant early on but then unite with them against, since the new Covenant leadership will have some thoughts to go over.
Probably not.
