Are Spartans allowed to have any tattoos?

the only Spartan I seen with a tattoo was Jun’s face/neck tattoo. This got me thinking that are Spartans aloud arm tattoos and stuff?

If ODSTs tattoo their backs, and if Jun is allowed one on the face, then yes, I think it’s safe to assume that Spartans can get arm tattoos. You answered your own question.

I don’t see why they’d be opposed. The military allows tatoos.

No reason not to.

Considering they are armor clad most of the time I don’t see why not. The real question is are they aloud to change their armor freely? Like not just cool like we can but add special not purposeful things on it. Like some sort of non unit emblem or a pattern not identifiable with the UNSC. Or add stuff like extra pouches onto their gear.

I believe Jorge’s armor is mentioned as customized.

Then you also have Emil with this skull.

Yup both good examples. What about the IV’s though. I was mostly implying about them.

cant see why they wouldn’t be.

Buck added marks to his armor to express his love for Dare

Spartan IVs were recruited into the programs as adults, most of them with prior military service. Tattoos are extremely common in the armed forces so it is safe to assume that plenty of S4s were coming in to the program already tatted out.

To be fair, in my head-canon Dare did that to his armor. I don’t think the story has been released

On topic, I don’t think tattoos are discouraged in any capacity.

Thanks

Yeah don’t see why not and hell you gonna tell a spartan they can’t do something lol. Also I’m pretty sure IVs can choose whatever gear they want.

About the gear: In modern times, special operations members from many different countries are given a lot of freedom as to what goes on their kit. Very often you see the terms “mission dictating” and “at operator’s discretion.” First of all, the given mission is going to largely determine what tools you bring with you, and that could also include certain types of armor. We know that some armor systems excel in areas that others do not, so when a Spartan IV team begins planning for a mission, they will at least consider, out of what kinds or armor and equipment are available to them, how they can use them to maximize their results. However, the majority of the ops these guys go on are usually direct action, I.e. Get in, -Yoink- everybody up, get out, so I would imagine their gear stays fairly static from mission to mission.

Then their is “operator’s discretion.” Most Spartan IVs have been running ground ops against the Covies for a good portion of their adult lives and as such they know what works best for them out of the available equipment. Undoubtedly there are SOPs in place to keep the new guys on track, but they also have advice and direction coming from the more experienced guys. We know that each Spartan Team deploying to combat is made up of members filling different roles, and to match that they select armor and weapon systems that excel in those roles. At the same time, every Spartan is trained to be able to adapt to any role being filled by their fellow team members should the mission change or the team gets segmented off and repurposed. If that happens they are capable of switching loadouts to (once again) maximize combat effectiveness.

In short, Spartan VIs are a highly effective special operation force, a title which by definition entails a high level of modularity and flexibility. Their armor and equipment reflects that. They are capable of adapting to a huge variety of missions and they’ve got access to tons of equipment tailored just for that, but at the end of the day they are primarily used in direct action roles. Can they change out armor and gear freely to fit the job? Yes. Is it common? I think it is not extremely common; they get set-up with what they know, build around eachother’s strengths, and become lethal. But the options exist.

As for adding emblems and personalization to their armor, my thoughts on that are: I don’t think that is against the rules, but tastefulness is key. If a Spartan is going to slap on a stylish design, he is going to do so knowing how much crap he is going to get from his team mates, and how hard he’s going to get laughed at.

No, they are not…
Sarcasm Intensifies

If Jun can get this one I am sure they all can.

I think Palmer has one that says “Halsey Sux” in an artistic fashion.

Military Standardization, possibly. Facial Tattoos like Jun’s are typically banned. But on the other hand, Spartan III’s were generally suicide soldiers, so they probably let it slide for reasons of morale.
