Are ODST's really considered a Special Force?

ODSTs in halo 3 were ordered to clear a landing zone on the ark for Miranda keyes frigate. I always thought that ODSTs do more special operations like for example Counter-Terrorism, Direct action, Foreign Internal Defense, Reconnaissance/Special Reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare. This is what a lot of Special forces do around the world in the army. Do you think ODSTs should just do Special operations or just be an elite infantry?

The best comparison for ODSTs is that they are futuristic paratroopers. They drop behind enemy lines and do damage from there.

They sort of try to get in behind enemy lines.

They were described as an elite force, so there’s that.

They are technically really elite infantry, and to me they’re just like Marines but more skilled, and deployed more exclusively for special operations, most of the time. It’s not rare for them to be front-line troops fighting off Covies tho. That’s basically how ODSTs operate. Although, your reasoning is flawed, because in Halo 3, the humans were like defending their race’s very survival, and they were seriously outgunned by the Covenant’s vast armies, forced to defend the last human homeworld with limited troops. Obviously the UNSC wouldn’t be picky about how they deployed their manpower, as long as it prevented their entire race from going extinct. The ODSTs were simply the best troops they could deploy at the time for an important task, aside from John, so of course they wouldn’t bother to stuff them into their specialised drop pods before sending them into battle. Whatever works, I guess.
