Are Custom Games BROKEN...YES

Customs have been “broken” since Forge released. Few issues were game breaking, they were rare but they existed, yet more game breaking ones came with each and every update. Anvil’s Legacy brought about glitches that, when combined with the other issues that have yet to be fixed, “broke” Customs.

A little positivity before I dig in. This is a very long response to a post of someone asking if Customs were broken. Too many people have no idea these issues are present.
Some stuck and some didn’t. Ex: Scripting movement on objects could transfer to objects that were not supposed to be scripted; the bug was fixed but some people’s maps were destroyed and had to be rebuilt. Other examples that were fixed include being locked out of playing on or Forging a map due to having no spawns on the map, or even having them but placing them midair instead of on a surface (although someone just reported with proof a week or so ago on reddit that this happened to them).

Ones that did stick around, however, are terribly game breaking. Here’s just a few of them. Time to dig in. Brace yourselves if you don’t know about these issues.
-Infection. This gametype is completely broken.

  1. Default Infection settings SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE. IT ONLY OCCURS WITH HEAVILY MODIFIED INFECTION GAMETYPES (otherwise it would have been fixed by now, since only default Infection is in matchmaking at the moment). Players NOT spawning into the game. This glitch causes a round to start with only a portion of players spawning in. Other players must wait until the next round to spawn, or the host must end the game, which usually causes a chain reaction of the glitch occurring again in subsequent Infection matches that don’t use the default settings. All players dying in the current round does NOT fix the issue by ending that round; it must be waited out or, again, the game must be ended.
  2. One life Infection does not work. The concept of this mechanism is to have a single Infected, and a gametype that revolves around either killing that Infected or surviving from that Infected. When the Infected dies, the round is supposed to end. IT DOES NOT. The round time continues. In many cases, this means extremely lengthy wait times for gameplay to continue. In lucky cases, there is less than a minute or so of waiting, but not all games are designed with such short time frames in mind, nor should they be limited to do so. Again, the round must be waited out or the game must be ended by the host.
  3. FFA Infection. Players start a round able to kill friendlies and enemies, even if friendly fire is OFF. The round’s end will either end the game, or fix itself in the next round. This one is very strange!

Bookmarks and the Content Browser are broken. Here’s a few of those examples.

  1. Many if not all? players cannot access anything beyond the 1st page of their bookmarks (12 bookmarks. Imagine being a games host with only 12 options, some of which won’t be available or will still be broken for reasons below.).
  2. Many players cannot bookmark new content, on top of not being able to see past the first page. Players are required to save the content. IF YOU SAVE CONTENT AND THE CREATOR UPDATES THEIR CONTENT, YOU DON’T GET THAT UPDATE. THEY DONT GET THAT BOOKMARK COUNT OR NOTORIETY IN THE MOST DL SECTION.
  3. Some players are able to scroll to the bottom of the page and beyond, without being able to see what content is there but nonetheless being able to access it by guessing what to load. If you’ve got a great memory, this is one less thing you have to worry about.
  4. Some Modified Gametypes (taking a stock gametype and changing a bunch of settings and saving it as its own gametype, usually to pair with a Custom map.) began to revert back to default settings with the Anvil update. Ex: My gametype for my map is made so you CANT jump, and the map is designed with that in mind. Gametype is now reset, and while playing my custom modified gametype on my custom map, you can now jump around it when you aren’t supposed to be able to. It reverted 3 times before I gave up trying to fix it (I tried a 4th time, and it may have finally stayed?).

*Many more issues exist, but those are “doable” in the sense that at least you can play content, get content updates, and use workarounds for all the glitches and fireteam issues like going past 16 players and not being able to start the game (you can get 30+ people in a fireteam, and boy do the lobby glitches become ever so apparent then). These issues are what’s making people consider Customs broken.
**Imagine having to deal with any one of these combined, when trying to host a game session for players. Imagine having to explain that these issues exist to people who have no idea about them, think they have the solutions for it, quit or even message you negatively as a result, and more.

What really needs to happen is 343i needs to take time and actually test everything in their updates before releasing them. I would gladly wait an extra week or two for a fully working update, rahter then get one on time or early and have stupid annoying bugs like these that ruin a big chunk of the game for forgers and custom gamers. It’s honestly ridiculous how these things make it through testing.

And 343i needs to show customs some love. Customs make up a large chunk of the community and keep the game alive years after its initial release. It seems like they completely overlook customs in Halo 5, with the lack of previous game modes, settings, lobby settings (choosing party privacy like open and closed and not limiting lobbies to 16 players), and with all the bugs that come with ALMOST EVERY update.

Sometimes you cant move through small passages, even through you can in forge.

Forge PC just got a stability update. Perhaps this is a step towards fixing the other new issues surrounding the Content Browser breaks and Customs Gametype reverts.

H5 is MCC 2.0 when it comes to Customs, that is unless you’re playing stock gametypes on unscripted slayer maps, which is NOT what most players wish to do with Custom Games. I’m both hopeful and skeptical that the game will be fixed. However, looking at MCC and H5’s history of compounding issues and never fixing them, we may never see H5 with stable Customs.

I think reaper is broken atm.

Chewy stopped playing the game because the AL update broke 100% of his content, and reset some of his gametypes. Auto timed scripts are broken, and a fix is needed but there’s no word on that fix.

Lol they kind of started breaking things going all the way back to Reach. I recall absolutely no update coming from 343i EVER that hasn’t caused issues in Forge and Customs. Matchmaking is always virtually issue free, in regards to actually working and being playable without tons of game ending glitch scenarios. It’s Halo’s baby, while Forge and Customs are middle children neglected and left to their own broken devices.

I had to completely stop development on one map I was making and start on entirely new ones because of the timed script things. I was so pumped for the new update because of the new texture blocks, but that doesn’t matter if you can’t even utilize the map. The map i was making had a labyrinth section that was completely bricked by the update, and hosting customs is frustrating because I can’t use many of the best minigames like drag race because of the scripting. Im sure there are so many maps we don’t see being posted now simply because they were bricked. I really hope that we will get fixes soon instead of some new weapons we can’t spawn people with and more bugs. The neglect customs get is so upsetting when you compare it to the incredible support forge has. Some basic features like forcing teams on customs are long overdue and make it beyond frustrating on the host.

Unfortunately we must rely on the Arena/Multiplayer team in regards to Customs support. If it were up to the Forge team to handle Customs, then we might see fixes sooner and options to Gametypes returned. The Arena team’s focus hasn’t leaned anywhere towards casual/Customs players in years, hence the feeling of neglect from our sect of the community.
