Arbiter's redesign is way too jarring

It really depresses me to see the Arbiter’s new armor… it looks absolutely NOTHING like the beautiful armor we saw him wear in Halos 2 and 3.

I mean, come on 343. Every one of your redesigns at least were recognizable to their former look, but THIS-

Compared to THIS-

Is just an unbelievably obnoxious change. The new armor isn’t recognizable to the old armor AT ALL. The only similarity is the shoulder hump and… that’s it.

And this is where the post gets opinionated, but Thel’s new armor is just downright hideous if you ask me. The helmet looks like the head of goddamned triceratops. What the hell is with that huge ugly plate at the back of the helmet?

I realize that the game is long in development and obviously the new armor is here to stay. And I also realize that I’m basing this off of a comic. Hopefully the armor will look more appealing in-game.

I’m just soooo upset to see that beautiful old armor be thrown away. Thel has been my favorite character ever since Halo 2 and his armor has been my favorite armor ever in the whole series, too.

Anyone else as sad as me?

I’m pretty sure that is some kind of ceremonial armor, if you look in Locke’s visor in the Master Chief Collection trailer you can make out clearly that he isn’t even wearing that.

> Anyone else as sad as me?

No, because I have the capability to understand that he likely has different armor for different purposes, what with him essentially being a politician-warrior now.

> I’m pretty sure that is some kind of ceremonial armor, if you look in Locke’s visor in the Master Chief Collection trailer you can make out clearly that he isn’t even wearing that.

I don’t know… I 1080p’d and full-screened before I made this topic just to be sure and it looks pretty similar to the comic armor.

I’m pretty sure I see a horn on the side of his helmet, and the shoulder hump is definitely bigger than it was in Halo 3, like the comic armor’s is…

It’s not supposed to be the Arbiter armor, it’s a new set.
Likely ceremonial, by the looks of it.

Besides, it makes sense for him to shed the Arbiter armor. The Arbiters were a symbol of the Covenant, something I’d imagine Thel wants to avoid.

Its possible the comic one was simply a concept. While the trailer image def looks sort of like it, it also resembles his old armor more as well. For example its lacking the ‘triceratops’ plate the OP is complaining about. Also seems to have gems in the shoulder.

The shoulder pad is less pronounce if you look at where his arm comes out of it.

Honestly I think arbiter getting new armor would make a lot of sense for a faction of elites dedicated to a new future. Wearing outdated armor sort of counters that.

Damn… how could I have never realized that?

The Arbiter’s armor was an armor of shame for the Covenant, so it makes sense for him to get a new set…

Crap. Oh well, I guess.

I’ll still miss Thel rocking the Arbiter armor.

Yeah, he was meant to die in that armor. I do love the original armor and it seems that the gold armor is just for a ceremony.

Are you sure jarring is the right word you want to use for describing his changes?

Maybe it’s just me but this is what it’s like when you see something that is jarring.

May just be ceremonial armor, or just a concept. Nothing is confirmed about the Arbiter’s look in Halo 5.

But, for the love of God, please give him the dark skin rather than the pale Storm faction Elite skin. He is straight up from the Covenant Army, where all the Elites had that sleek, dark skin and full armor plating. Make them like that and leave the Storm models away from the design of these characters.

So was Jul 'Mdama and yet he was lighter skinned as well. Not saying there shouldn’t be physical differences, but I don’t think that is the best argument.

Hmm, didn’t know that. But still, I mean, we have never seen Jul in any other games, so there was room to explore, but the Arbiter needs to keep his dark-skinned look. I think it makes the Elites more menacing than the light skin. The light skin makes them look like they have old people skin, real white, almost pale, with brownish splotches on it. Eesh, not menacing at all.

I’d say he looks pretty good at the moment. Reminds me of the Arbiter from Halo Wars.

i kinda like the new armor, i feel the other arm needs to be covered and his skin should be returned to how it was before and not like the storm elites. other than that i like it.

I hope your kidding… The comic armour is gold first of all, the armour in the video is black/dark coloured with the same patterns as the original and the same head piece as the original, how can you say it looked like the comic book armour? Im so confused…

The armor he wore in Escalation made him seem very wise in appearance, in some forms.

It’s the armor that I’d expect from a seasoned warrior that’s culture is defined by honor and tradition. It’s also the kind of armor that I’d wear during a peace conference.

Also, having the Arbiter change his armor after thousands of years of use would symbolically portray the change that he and his society are going through. With game that’s rules constantly change, some old traditions will have to be abandoned in order to keep up with everyone else, and the Arbiter drastically changing his armor, IMO, portrays that really well.

Furthermore, I can’t help but admire how the reaction that we, as fans, are giving to the Arbiter’s change in appearance lines up perfectly with the reaction that the Sangheili give when faced with having to abandon traditions after a thousand years of steady seas.

It’s different armor.

It does look a bit like it, but with more detail. It might be that 343 intends the armor in the trailer to be the same as the one from the comics. And the armor in the trailer is gold, not black.

I have to say I really like how he looks here. Fairly close to the classic look but updated to the new Elite design.

A+

That’s his Halo 2 Anniversary look. Not his Halo 5 look.
