I believe this topic has been discussed for PvP, but my question is for Firefight. Which is better to use? I know the SMG does more damage per second (and has a faster TTK in PvP) but has worse accuracy compared to the AR. For this topic, please compare the extended mag versions.
I generally pick SMG over the AR because I’ll have a BR for the longer range fights. Honestly though I usually have a Warthog or Ghost out by that point.
TBH both the weapons even with extra mags are terrible. The SMG is better than the assault rifle in close quarters simply due to having faster fire rate. The assault rifle isn’t effective in dealing against Prometheans or Covenant (strips armour and shields way too slow, and for basic infantry you have headshot weapons for that). If you are going to sit back at long range picking enemies off, just have two battle rifles/DMRs or invest in a lightrifle/suppressor against Promethean soldiers or a storm rifle/needler against elites, they won’t have much ammo, but they’re much more efficient at taking general infantry out than your standard UNSC weaponry. I play WZ FF on Legendary all the time so that’s what I believe are the best ways to approach enemies. If you play WZ FF on heroic then perhaps you have a bit of leeway since the enemies are weaker.
SMG.
Fights where the AR gets a red reticle but the SMG doesn’t just work better with the Battle Rifle.
Well in general, I’ve noticed that many people will switch to the SMG in the latter rounds of the WZFF game if they wanna save on req energy and put down fire on big targets.
However, the AR is more accurate and had longer zoom optical range. Plus it’s damage bonus on enemy weakpoints is actually higher than the SMGs. With the right attachments and the good complimentary mod, you’ll have a surprisingly great weapon for long range precise damage. Something I think the other Autos lack.
And yes im been made aware of the BR and DMR are was the players run with when facing more powerful enemy bosses and regular minions. However they tend to have less ammo event with the ammo mod. And their close range firepower just doesn’t suit well agaisnt some other tough to crack bosses (like hunters)
Depends on the situation honestly. I usually run the AR for cleaning up trash mobs until I get the BR/DMR, and sometimes when I’m going up against light vehicles for the Kinetic Bolt damage.
The SMG I keep for bosses, cause it can MELT anything massive and has a huge magazine, especially with extended mags.
Not sure which one is better, however as much as I love my SMGs it has a little to much recoil, which is understandable. In most cases though, I think an AR would be better.
i just prefare the SMG
I use both actually, when im not in a ghost anyways lol

Same!! Wow I’m kinda surprised. I promised myself that the next time I play Warzone I’m going to run reflex enhancers with it lol. I bet it’s ridiculous.
And to the OP: The AR is kind of the jack of all trades weapon. If you use burst and smart link, you can actually outshoot BR users if you pace yourself and do the usual strafing n whatnot. But the DPS is pretty garbage for an automatic weapon, I mean it’s nearly as bad as the precision guns for DPS. And it only has like 2 kills worth of bullets in each magazine. The SMG doesn’t have this flaw but it’s “don’t even think about it” range is a lot closer because the accuracy is so bad. High capacity, rate of fire, etc, is not its problem. Increasing the accuracy with various attachments will better help you overall in warzone. Now if you’re playing warzone assault and you’re defending, go ahead and run it. Tons of attackers rushing in at you means it’s going to be very helpful. But as a backup weapon in most warzone situations, I’d be going with an accuracy attachment when using the SMG to back up my primary or power weapon.
The AR is my favorite weapon in the Halo series, but I have to admit, the SMG is better in PvE and PvP.
Once I’m at level 5, I always go for the extended mag SMG instead of my Extended Mag AR.
Thanks for all the helpful replies
I had been using the SMG until yesterday when I had the thought to researching if using the AR made more sense for my playstyle in WZFF.

Does this mean you can pull off headshots against the AI? There have been times I’ve felt the AR killled the enemy a bit faster than expected. That could just be a misplaced feeling though. So pretty much, if it can pull off headshots or at least do more damage when aimed at the head than the SMG (again in firefight), I think I’ll switch to the AR from now on. If not, I’ll continue with the SMG.
Forgot to mention in the prior comment, I’m asking in order to have a good complement to the BR because that is after all the one I use the most, but certain situations require a good dose of auto fire.

Yes, the AR does double damage on unshileded/unarmored headshots and weak points. The SMG does lower bonus damage but it’s rate of fire and large magazine is supposed to compensate for it.
If ya feeling like you wanna really go ham on them, a SAW has the best of both worlds. The accuracy of the AR (less bloom and more recoil) and the magazine size of the SMG. But it does cost four Req points.

Okay cool. I have noticed how I’m able to kill more grunts with one clip of the AR when I aim for the face. So I guess it’s AR for now
I prefer the SMG. It still feels quite powerful at mid range even despite the loss of accuracy. The faster rate of fire stuns smaller enemies quicker too.

That’s very interesting. I’ve played Destiny, where you can see the damage numbers, and noticed that you do more damage with any weapon when hitting the head. It’s the same in CoD, too, but I was never sure if it was in Halo. Is this true of all automatic weapons, and is it in the other games?
smg
The SMG has it self proven against bosses.
Thats a personal opinion.
