Hello All, I have a HUGE problem with Halo Master Chief Collection. I tried to update the newest April update, which is 1.6 gb and it got stuck at 17% and it will not advance any further. I waited for hours and hours and nothing happens. I can download other games and apps plus install them fine on my Xbox one so it’s not an issue with my console or my network. I opened a case with Xbox.com and they had me remove my account, hard reset the console, remove cache, un-install the game, then re-add my account, try to re-install the game. It goes right back to 17%, (yes, the April update install went to 17% and yes, when I un-installed the game and have tried to re-install it, it goes to 17%, no further) for a few moments, then goes to queued, then back to installing… 17%, then back to queued, and on and on. It will NOT get past 17%. I have tried everything I know and Microsoft knows to do. Microsoft said to contact the game developer. I cannot find a phone # so I sent an email to halowaypoint community. I have two xbox ones. I tried to install the update on the other one and the same exact thing happened, it gets to 17% and doesn’t go any further. I have tried all the trouble shooting steps on both consoles. I don’t know if maybe there is a sync issue or what is going on but nothing is working. I have researched this and have found that a few people are having similar issues but no resolution. It’s funny to me that a lot of people on here are complaining about the game types, game changes, etc. At least you people get to play the DAMN game! If anyone has any helpful info. Please, please help me with this.
Thanks
I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve talked to Xbox Support twice and have tried everything. I literally have the exact same problem you do where the update will not progress past 17%. I wish I knew what was causing this but I’m as clueless as you and everyone else. I honestly think its a problem on 343 side and there seems to be nothing we can do about it. I thought giving it some time and then going back would work but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
The only possible solution I have come up with is that if you have another friend with an Xbox One, install and update Halo MCC on there and then move it to an external HDD and then move it back to your Xbox. It is the only thing I can come up with other than waiting for 343 to fix the update. I haven’t tried it yet but I will try to soon within the next few days. I can tell you if that works out for me.
I know how frustrated you are, believe me I am too. This is my most played game and now I literally cannot play it. Anyway good luck to us both.
Well, glad to know I’m not alone, I guess. Do you have two Xbox ones or just one? I have got the game itself to re- install offline but then when I go to do the initial 18 gb update, it goes back to that damn 17% BS! This is beyond frustrating and nobody from 343 wants to assist at all. What the hell 343? I have been nothing but supportive since launch even through all the bugs. This is close to being the final straw for me though. Please, somebody, help me fix this game that I purchased from your company and now cannot even play. Btw, thanks for offering to help Indian Kid. Please let me know if you make any progress and I will keep you updated on this thread as well.
That’s odd… Well good luck.
Bumpity bump, still not able to install this game 343… WTH???
Indian Kid, did your update finally finish? Mine is doing the same thing, stuck at 17%. I even reset factory settings on one of my xbox’s, logged back in, installed the game offline, tried to do the 18 gb update, it gets to 3%, then shoots up to 17% where it goes through a constant loop of nothingness.
This is just ridiculous and 343 does not care.
I haven’t had any luck with the update either. In fact my friend who I was going to ask to download the game and move it to my HDD also ran into the same problem. Among all my friends who have the issue, one thing is common, we are all on our college’s internet. I don’t know if that could be the issue but the only real way to see is for one of us to go home and try to update it there. I don’t think that is going to happen for another week or so but when it does, I’ll be sure to tell you what happens. I also saw another person on Reddit with the exact same issue as us. I can’t help but feel like my college’s internet has something to do with since two of my friends on campus have the exact same issue but I don’t know how it would effect you or the others. You’re right though, what makes this extremely aggravating for me is that Microsoft Support cannot do anything and there is no way to get in touch with 343 so I give them a piece of my mind. If anything changes, I’ll let you know and good luck.
Hey guys,
I had this issue also. Do you happen to be on a University network? It wouldn’t download for me at college, so I brought my xbox home and it downloaded with no issues. I’m going to be working with one of the network managers at my college to see if we can pinpoint the issue. If we could get enough attention to this thread and get someone from 343 to comment on where/how the updates download from, we might be able to solve this issue.
Yeah, i’m on a university network too. In my mind this all but confirms it, for whatever reason my college’s internet seems to be screwing us over for some reason. It’s weird since any other download works like a charm. Just out of curiosity brenduntu, which university’s network are you using? I’m using University of Maryland College Park and I’m wondering if it’s something specific to University of Maryland or just colleges in general. Are you on a university connection too Cadilac?
Hello Guys !
I’m new here, my English is not so perfect. I would like to know if it’s possible to check if the latest April update is on my Xbox or no ?
Because I just install Halo on my Xbox one week ago.
Thanks from Switzerland

Thankfully this month there is a way. I’ll quote from another post I made
If you have a small _ (dash) showing in the top left hand corner of your screen when you boot up MCC, you have the latest update that’s available. Not sure why the dash is there, but I’m hoping it could be a placeholder for a version number for future updates. It will look a bit like this.
If you don’t see that, then try the following steps:
- Quit all apps on your Xbox until you are back at the dashboard
- Hold in the power button on the box for 30 seconds
- Unplug the power brick from your Xbox
- Reboot your router / modem (doesn’t hurt to do this once in a while)
- Once the router / modem has rebooted plug the Xbox power brick back in and switch the box on
- Load up MCC and see if it prompts you for an updateIf none of that helps, you may be best talking to Xbox Support and see what they can advise. Make sure to mention these steps that you’ve taken as they will probably ask you to do something similar
Hi @stckrboy,
Thanks you a lot for the feedback.
I see the small _ (dash) showing in the top left hand corner of my screen. I don’t have to make the reboot.
See you
I am also having this issue - none of my game installs or updates are working, they all get stuck at a certain %. I am also on university internet.
Yea, I am at UMD also. OldKnave is as well, haha (Hey David). I just made a call into the network operations center and we’re working on resolving this issue, so I’ll keep this thread updated. Hopefully someone higher up at 343 will see this so we can actually get support on this.
I can confirm I’m having the same problem, isolated to MCC on my university internet. Problem also happened during a fresh install of the game (I thought I would just reinstall it to fix the update freezing).
Yup… Just bought the hard copy of the game this weekend, went to install it and it got stuck at 17%. Looked up the issue and seems no one on the UMD internet can finish the instillation. I think that means it’s definitely a UMD issue, and tbh I don’t think the school will do anything about it. Let me know if you guys make any lee way on this.
So… is this getting fixed by Microsoft or should I contact my University?
Hey guys, just wanted to tell everyone at UMD who is having an issue that they fixed it. Apparently the UMD network was blocking it as malware but it works now. It is updating for me as I’m typing this. Should work for everyone else at UMD although finals are coming up so I don’t know how much you’ll get to play…
Have the same problem at University of Missouri, except every game that I try to update seems to do this. They all get stuck at a certain percentage. I know I can just go home and update but still this is still becoming a huge pain.
