Anyone Missing the Beta?

I don’t know about you guys, but I miss the beta. I had a blast. So stop here if that’s not what you wanted to hear …

I had the thing fired up and ready to hop in the minute it went live. My first match I had like a +14 k/d. I’m assuming it was everyone else’s first match and they were trying to figure out the controls, but I had mine already set to “Halo 4” (which is roughly the same control scheme I adopted for Reach and every game since), so I cleaned house … hard.

Then a day or so in, everyone else figured out how to play the game and I quickly got put back in my usual mediocre-at-Halo place.

Okay, so … the beta wasn’t perfect, but overall, I liked it. There was something very Combat-Evolved-esque about it (which was my first and favorite Halo). I think it may be the physics (ever get the “Combat Evolved” medal?) and the centered reticle (you didn’t even notice that, did you?), but even though the game is incredibly modern feeling, there was something about it that felt … I don’t know how to say this because I seem to be in the minority on this, but very much like classic Halo. It was like they took the best features from Halo 3 & Halo 4 and sprinkled a little CE in there, then introduced some more modern mechanics (for good or ill).

So here’s where I stand:

1. Guns:

AR: I don’t think it’s over-powered. I like that it’s a viable weapon for once. It’s still easily bested by a BR, just not as easy as before. I don’t want Halo to be a one-gun-game.

SMG: Very OP. Take it down a notch.

BR: I love it. Probably the best one in the franchise (oh yes I just did.)

DMR: Not my go-to, but I think it’s decently balanced. Seems on par with the Halo 4 version (post-weapons tuning). Much better than Reach’s.

Hydra: Once you learn how to use it, it’s great.

Sniper Rifle: Slow rate of fire (I’m not sure if that’s good or bad since I’m terrible with a sniper) and the zoom needs to be tweaked.

Rocket Launcher: I miss the SPNKr, but it has a pretty cool reload animation.

Magnum: I’m pretty sure this is the M6C from Halo 2 … or some variant of it (M6E?). But I love it. It’s hard to aim, but very effective. Judging from Halo 4 & Halo 5, 343 knows how to make a good magnum.

Lightrifle: Sexiest scope ever. I like the 3-shoot-kill whilst zoomed. The maps we played made this quite hard to pull off, what with all the cover.

Prophet’s Bane & Energy Swords: They’re energy swords. What do you want me to say?

Weapons may need a bit of balancing, but they’re pretty spot-on for a beta.

2. Maps:

Truth: Great remake of Midship.

Regret: Very pretty and fun for Strongholds and Slayer

Eden: Decent

The rest were pretty “meh” … I didn’t like Empire or the two Forge maps. I’d say the maps were the weakest part of the beta.

3. Audio:

I love the sounds. Everything is so tight & crisp. I like being able to clearly hear footsteps and the rustle of my armor as I bolted around the map. The guns sound great. Spartan chatter is new, but helpful. I didn’t like it at first, but it grew on me. That “pop” noise when you get a headshot was weird at first too, but it quickly became very satisfying to hear.
I’ve dabbled in audio production for over 15 years and this game has some very impressive compression and overall sound.

4. Abilities:

Sprint: I like sprint with consequences. When I heard about it, I was worried, but after playing with it, I think it works well.

Clamber: When I went back to play the older games, this is something I kept wishing I could do. So I think that’s a good sign.

Thruster: plain fun. It’s just incredibly satisfying and enjoyable to thrust about during combat.

Slide: Never once used it except to try it out.

Spartan Slam: Not a fan. I pulled a few of them off, but usually they were quite a gamble. It needs serious work done … or removed … or at least moved to the thruster button so I can assassinate someone if I want to.

Ground Pound: I thought this was the dumbest thing in the world when I heard about it, but it’s rather fun to use. It rarely happens and needs some serious tweaking, but I think it should stay (though I won’t cry if they get rid of it.)

Smart Scope: It simply looks cool. I could take it or leave it, but it functions more like an elaborate tradition zoom than it does ADS.

Hover: I didn’t like it at first, but it was another of those things I missed doing when I went back to play the older games.

5: Gametypes:

Breakout: Not a fan

Slayer: duh, it’s awesome

Strongholds: I really like the scoring system. Only one team can score at a time and only if they control at least two strongholds. Very fun.

I’m sure I’m missing something, but in conclusion, I thought it was a very solid beta. There are some things I’d like to see changed, like increasing the kill times, tweaking the abilities, adding the Mark V armor, and creating some good solid maps … do that, and I’ll be the happiest Halo fan ever.

I really miss the beta. Like my friends and I would literally run home and hop on so we could play it. I had teams made for each of the different game types and all. It was awesome

Nvm fixed.

I do miss it, especially since MCC is still in shambles. Balanced weapon sandbox for the first time since CE. I think they should stick to the BR/AR starts. Either that or buff the magnum in some way.

Legendary weapon: Keyes’ Magnum. Make it happen 343.

I’d rather have a working MCC than Halo 5.

I don’t I would rather look at the future then to be stuck in the past. But what ever you want to talk about is up to you

MCC is working for me at less I could find matches in all of the game types the last time I played. So it is not like it is a very big deal for me.

The game came out 3 months ago. -_-

I’d like them both to work. The MCC is WAY overdue, but considering the Frankenstein’s Monster-esque manner the MCC was constructed, I don’t expect Halo 5 to suffer the same problems.

and sonic boom was out longer and is in worse condition then this is.

If I was not mistaken, people were complaining since 1 hour it came out. So sorry that i don’t have any sympathy for this.

and your on forums talking about said game that you said “you dont miss” and was a “subpar game” because…?

I miss the beta! Played it every day. I was getting a little tired of the limited number of maps, but it’s a beta so what can you do?

I agree with the OP about basically everything. Though I did see the slide put to good use and I actually really dug Breakout. Not so much Strongholds though.

Also I second the Legendary Weapon: Keyes’ Magnum. But would it be loaded when you picked it up? :stuck_out_tongue:

lol. My thoughts exactly.

It was my fault I never really used the slide. I just forgot it was there. And in the heat of Halo combat, it’s the last thing I think to do. There’s nothing wrong with it, it just didn’t really stick out to me. I’ll be sure to find a use for it in the final game.

I’m not a very competitive gamer, so I find objective gametypes like Strongholds to be very fun. Something like Breakout was just … I really don’t know how to explain it. It was fun, but after about 5 matches I was right back in Slayer. But that gametype was specifically made for more competitive players, which I am not.

It’s not quite as illogical as it sounds. Sitting at a restaurant–
“Sir, would you like to see a menu?”

“No, I’ll just be having a drink before leaving.”

“Are you sure you wouldn’t like to stay for a meal?”

“Well, no, I’m sorry to say the food used to be better here.”

“Um…if you don’t mind me asking, why are you here, then?”

“Well, whilst the food is still good, the previous chef made food that no-one else could beat. The ambience and the decor are splendid as always, the staff is friendly and I like the fact that you’ve really delved in to the history of this place and have displayed it well.”

Something along those lines, perhaps? Probably best not to stretch the metaphor too far…

Edit: Oh, you deleted that section of your post. Nevermind!

Well … mine already had the drink, thus the belligerence. And now it’s been stretched too thin :frowning:

Yeah, I deleted it because I realized it was pretty dumb.

I do not miss Falo 5 at all 343 can polish that turd all they want but a turd is a turd…So no I don’t miss that crap!

EDIT: not worth it

I miss the beta as well. It was great in my opinion and nothing will change that.

I can’t say I used slide much either, but some dude with a sword slid under my hail of gunfire and cut me down. Pretty slick move, must admit… Quite literally a low blow though!
