I played the campaign again and thought Cortanas character was way over done in H4. It’s nothing to do with the rampancy stuff it’s more about the way she talks. A couple of examples are in cutscenes like when MC says they have to find a ride off the planet Cortana nods and says “ok” with a breath like shes cold and worried… It just felt weird and over the top to me and didn’t feel like Cortana from H1, 2 and 3. The other cringe worthy cutscene for me is when she talks about requiems sun saying “ill never know if it looks real… If it feels real” with her eyes closed. Facial animations were over done too. She just didn’t feel like the same AI we loved from the start.
Anyone get what I mean?
Cortana being incredibly human was the point. You can’t relate to a line of code that acts like a line of code.
No. She was the human, he was the machine. Now things will take a turn when she’s gone.
Cortana being human in halo 4 was a huge part of the game, switching the chief and cortana being man and machine, and to show an emotional part of an AI that the chief does not feel he contains until after she is gone.
if she was less human in this game I don’t think it would have the same effect
That was also the whole point of rampancy. At some point in the final stages of rampancy the A.I. can start feeling like it’s human (or should be human).

Sif and Mack anyone?

That’s one of the points of rampancy.
Everyone else has said it well. Rampancy is a major factor to this. Cortana isn’t suppose to feel like the Cortana we knew from earlier iterations of Halo.
I didn’t like the added humanity. She had a bit in Halo 3 and that worked well I thought. I didn’t like how they made her in Halo 4 or how they conveyed this sense of intimacy between the two it made things very awkward especially because she ISN’T human. It ruined the story for me honestly. The story would’ve have been amazing without that awkward aspect.
I understand rampancy and I loved the concept of her being in it going into Halo 4 but they made giving her her own humanity for it to far. They could’ve done rampancy without doing some of the things they did…
> because she ISN’T human.
Why not…?

That’s literally because she’s going Rampant

She’s as close to being human as possible for an AI, she explains this in beginning of Requiem level.
