anyone else think reload sounds are... lackluster?

the animations are ok for what they are. they aren’t amateurish, but they’re nothing amazing either, but I can live with that. what I really dislike is how boring the sounds are. all Halo entries before this one have nice reload sounds, especially 5 IMO. they have the caching, the cling, clank, chukchuk, etc etc. all metal-y heavy and satisfying sounds. but the recent ones have none of that. the only ones I found alright where the commando, which sounds pretty average, and the SPNKr which has a heavy satisfying metal clank, but it’s still leagues below something like Reach’s sound. the biggest offender imo was the sniper. the shot sounds extremely powerful and intimidating. the animations make it look like a weapon to be reconned with, but the reload is quiet and boring.

Before y’all come at me, no, I’m not telling 343 to port MW2019’s animations over(which I do love, some of the best I’ve ever seen). I’m just saying that they should’ve done a better job in the sound departament given all they gave us for over a year was sound recording sessions in their youtube channel. and no, this isn’t an echo chamber opinion from twitter. this is my own opinion I came up with literally as I was watching gameplay for the first time, and something I’ve talked about with friends, including one who is a professional fps gun animator.

Noticed that too. Noticed others talking about it on reddit and such.

In general, I think they could do a quality pass on weapon models, sounds, and visual effects. A lot of them lack depth and detail

From a audio standpoint, I know they’re going for a more dynamic sound. It’s not as heavily compressed as it was in Halo 5. They’re doing the Marty O’Donnell approach and leaving the audio as clean and raw as should be. Which has its pros & cons, just like the overly compressed sound does.
The big pro is realism. Reloading doesn’t sound as loud as firing the damn gun. Another pro is that other sounds play well together when there’s more headroom. There’s room to breathe, if you will. Layering sounds near & far, loud & quiet … to make that work well, having the audio as clean & dynamic as possible is preferable. “Straight off the mic”, more or less. The more over processed and compressed, the messier things get because everything is loud AF.
That’s what they’re going for, I think.

yeah my animator friend mentioned that too. how they sound more realistic. But tbh it’s a bit hypocritical how most of the community is saying “halo is a scifi franchise and its not ultra tactical and realistic like COD” only to turn around and say the sounds are meant to be realistic. I’m not blaming you or calling you hypocritical, just the community as a whole. tbf I 100% prefer the ultra processed and modified satisfying sounds rather than the quiet realistic and unmodified ones.

**thinking about what to complain about **: “I don’t think anyone’s complained about reloads sound yet!”

I don’t complain to complain. In fact if you check my posts you can see I’m a hopeful and positive Halo fan that always tries to see the good side, but won’t lie to myself by pretending the reloads are anything more than mediocre at most.

No mate I wouldn’t see you as just “complaining”, it is of course okay to voice your opinions here and I’m sure you know that. I think it is a bit discouraging however to attempt to level what someone is passionate about to a simple complaint. I personally like the more realistic sounds but from growing up with Halo I can totally see how people would have preferences otherwise. I enjoy reading everyone’s thoughts on the new game, whether I agree or not, as I am super proud of 343 and extremely exited to say the least about the upcoming release. Keep your thoughts coming my man, some of us really do enjoy and value the input!

Cheers!

Halo 5 outside of Halo 4 had the most irritating sound design in the series. Everything is completely over-designed, from the insufferable ‘pew pew’ of the magnum, to the obnoxiously clunky spartan ragdolls.

Infinite gets it right by making everything much more subtle.
