Anyone Else Realize This is 343's First Spin-Off?

It wasn’t until after Halo 3, in 2009, that Bungie released a spin-off game. At which point, spin-offs seemed pretty consistent in the Halo franchise. Sure, 343’s released anniversaries and mobile games, but Halo Wars 2 is the VERY FIRST spin-off game developed under them.

Creative Assembly is developing Halo Wars 2. 343i are in a kind of advisory role.

I said “developed under them”, not BY them. I strictly meant under their ownership of the franchise. I KNEW FOR A FACT someone would misunderstand me, which is why I specifically worded it like that to avoid this VERY conversation.

Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike aren’t proper games?

Wouldn’t Halo Online have counted? (Admittedly it was a Russian Only Beta but still)

Spartan Assault, Spartan Strike, and Halo Online were all “developed under them” in the exact same way. The anniversary games were outsourced in the same manner as these 3 and Halo Wars 2. So no, its not.

But your choice of wording did cause confusion, and either way is wrong.

As a few have already pointed out. Spartan Strike, Spartan Assault…

A mobile game isn’t a proper, full retail game. I’m talking a FULL, RETAIL, on-the-shelves, 60USD game like ODST, Reach, the original Wars…

I keep having to remind myself people think differently than I do. Because to me, it seems like perfectly normal, common sense that would be the FIRST THING a person assumes when they read it. But of course people have different thought processes. How is a person supposed to have conversations when every single sentence is bound to be completely and utterly misunderstood?

As a gamer, my first thought when I hear the generic word ‘game’ is the typical, $60USD, disk-based game I insert into my console. Not a mobile game, not a market-exclusive game, just a game with a disk, that cost $60 at retail launch, AAA title, on the platform the franchise is known for.

A video game is a digital or analog program meant for entertainment, or in some cases education.

Only considering games that are 60 dollars on a disc as a “proper game”, so to speak severely limits what you see as a game.

Minecraft isn’t 60 dollars
CS:GO isn’t 60 dollars
DotA 2 isn’t on disc and it doesn’t even cost anything, the same goes for LoL.
Rocket League isn’t 60 dollars and to my knowledge isn’t on disc either.
Warframe is free and not on disc.

I’m pretty sure I remember seeing a 343i logo somewhere in HW1…

Use your words and spell it out so that there’s no confusion next time. You seem to understand that we aren’t in your head, reading your thoughts, and yet are annoyed that we can’t fill in the blanks with your implied thought process…

Yeah come on, I spent 15 bucks on Spartan assault, and there are better games cheaper on steam. So really, it doesn’t really count and from the track record don’t get your hopes up.

Pointing out that they both realized on the pc and xbox(spartan assault and spartan strike) and so does that mean Indie games aren’t games? I mean seriously, you should really work on specifying, because technically board games are games, so they would be spin offs. Also what is the significance of this being the first spin-off game for console, we might see more? Of course we will look at how much Halo has creeped into other genres of games.

Bungie made a halo spinoff called destiny lol

Speaking of Halo online, is there any news in that area or is it lost to MS and 343i secret projects list?

afaik its all gone quite since the announced the end of the closed beta.

I’d assume its not something we’ll ever see again, a F2P version of H5s MP would seem to be a much more likely future

They dropped their story telling skills somewhere though… they are still looking for it… /smh

To me, Halo 5’s campaign makes it a spinoff game as well lol

Wow what a closed minded way to look at gaming dude. A video game is a video game no matter the cost, distribution, and content.

Angry Birds and Kingdom Rush are just as much video games as Battlefield 4 and Halo Reach. And not all AAA games are $60 or even disk-based, a lot of games are free or very cheap nowadays and digital or have a heavy focus on digital (Xbox Play Anywhere). Look at ReCore, it’s going to be $40. And then you got games like Warfame that’s free and can only be bought digitally.

Since Halo 4, three spin-offs have released as well as a packaged port of four others on one disc:

  • Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike were the first two spin-off games 343i worked on
  • Halo Online, while a spin-off, was not made by 343i; rather a side project set up by Microsoft for Saber Interactive, similar to how the original Halo Wars came to be
  • Halo Wars 2 has a much heavier involvement from 343i then the others but, it’s mostly in story and art direction, not gameplay
