343 definitely knew what they were doing when they released this game. They knew the game was full of bugs and the store was and is an issue. They figured they would be gone for 2 weeks and hope by making players wait they would buy the over priced items.
Of course this is my opinion but what “legit” company would run a franchise like this.
And we’re literally asking for the problems before SBMM to not come back.
We’re supposed to learn from history’s mistakes.
Sorry… your post seemed to indicate you didn’t want to play players of similar skill (or intensity of play) to you.
K:D or easy wins… they pretty much go hand in hand.
Which is essentially random match-making - the antithesis of SBMM.
And I’m just pointing out that random doesn’t work. The only people who get 50:50 are people around Gold 6. And for those on the edges of the curve (eg. Onyx) it’s endless feasting on chum.
Again I cannot understand how you come to your conclusions. I tell you I want variety and randomness in my matches, somehow that means to you that I don’t want to play against people of my skill. Your conclusion instead should be that I do not want to play against myself at all times - that would be accurate and I said as much.
The reason random doesn’t work is cause Sbmm has killed it. I do not think the majority of players like Sbmm. YouTube and the forums are full of complaints about it. Have it in ranked (as it should be) and leave it out in social - that is the only thing that makes sense. Sbmm is the antithesis of social.
The problem of random matchmaking is that it is only random for someone in the middle of the curve.
It’s an appalling experience for anyone less than average.
Apologies - I never meant to get off tone or be accusatory.
I was just trying to point out that for anyone but the average player it doesn’t produce an average spread of games. For the good players (no idea where you sit in the pantheon of skill) it is anything but average.
But the higher you are above Gold 6 the softer the games become. Once you reach Onyx more than 9/10 of your opponents will be ranked below you.
No, the reason random doesn’t work is maths.
I would have thought the opposite. The (silent) majority are quite happy with SBMM giving them a spread of evenly contested games.
Strict in Ranked - matched to the individual.
Loose in Social - matched to the team.
Makes much more sense then serving up noobs for good players to toy with.
Something I will never understand why they did that. What did they expect? Everything to run 100% smoothly upon launch? That rarely happens nowadays in any kind of IT related business. IT’s complexity drastically advances with every day.
They should’ve rather taken the break before the launch, to keep up with the pace and feedback immediately after launch. Something we always intend to do in our company when there’s big-bang releases.
I don’t see any indicators that randomness would be a bad experience for bad players. It’s random, it could go either way.
Retention rate says otherwise? Infinite lost 3/4 of its player base on Steam. It’s also likely to assume that even disgruntled players like me keep playing cause they want to finish their battle passes, weekly ultimates, and events. Fomo is the devil’s work.
But neither you nor me have much more in terms of data to support either claim.
Someone earlier said here that I should stop playing when it feels like a job - that does make sense, but despite the horrible matchmaking I love the mechanics of the game. I care about the game and I don’t want to give up on it, I want it to be better than it is now. But after this week, after the Battlepass, I definitely step away until more casual aspects are introduced to the game. I will just do weeklies and hope off until they refresh the week after. The game is too straining to keep playing as I have been since launch. I just wish it wouldn’t be that way. I want Infinite to be my new Halo 3, but that isn’t on the table yet. There is no place for me yet to just kick back and relax. No forge, no firefight, no warzone, no custom games, no wacky modes - just the the arena drenched in sweat, Dorito dust, and GFuel powder.
SBMM is out of control, at least give us ONE CBMM playlist. Unlike MCC where I play with my Halo buddies, Infinite is mainstream so I’m playing with my friends that don’t necessarily play Halo. The difference between matches when with my Halo buds and IRL buds who are bad at Halo is insane.
I’m starting to get burnt out I’m Tier 100 and not feeling rewarded for doing good, I’ve been playing the Original Assassins Creed games & Resident Evil games and having much more fun
I might go back to TMCC if there’s nothing to achieve
Draw a normal curve. Put a dot on the left hand tail for bad players. Now choose opponents randomly from the area under the curve.
The problem is that there is much more area to the right of the bad player to the left. So there is no some good games and some bad games. There is mainly bad games.
And the opposite holds true for good players on the left hand side of the curve.
You can run a random number generator - excel even has functions that generate random numbers from a normal distribution. It’s not hard to see.
I don’t know. Maybe you are a pretty average player (no shame it in… me too)… and your experience is close to 50:50. But for a lot of people it’s not.
The data with TrueSkill2 says that 20-30% better retention rate with SBMM.
Any drop off is in spite of SBMM not because of it.
Me too. Have a lovely and safe New Year (it’s approaching midnight here in Tasmania). I hope 2022 gives you more of the Halo you are looking for.
the main reason sbmm is bad is because it keeps bad players playing with bad players, they’ll never get any better same with mediocre players and so on, even halo 5 had a search preference setting that mostly turned off sbmm
The randomness is what I want. Ideally, I wouldn’t know what I will get on any given day or round instead of being able to predict how my rounds will go. I am one of the average players in the middle with occasional moments of brilliance.
I do understand though now how the experience may be worse for players on either end, you have explained it well. I guess in this case completely eliminating SBMM wouldn’t be ideal, so I soften my stance. But I still believe the brackets should be at least looser. I think that would be a good middle ground.
I am very surprised that +20-30% seemingly stay for SBMM. Those are probably the players on both the good and bad end of the spectrum.
I wish you a happy and healthy new year too. I do hope going forward Infinite offers more for everyone in 2022.
Negatory man, have to grind the weekly every week to get the shiney so when year 5 ones come out with way better shines than year 1, I can cry and feel special.
You would still improve playing players of your skill - or just above you. And probably faster overall than if you are simply being smashed with no idea what’s going on.
We know that players in Ranked games can keep improving despite even stricter SBMM being applied.
And look. While I will staunchly defend SBMM over RBMM (seriously, it’s a no-brainer)… I think there are better options for 343 to create a social atmosphere.
The maps and sandbox set up is finely tuned for competitive play - so why should you expect to put players in the same set up and expect them to play any differently? It doesn’t make sense.
For a start make it multi-team. When you are out-numbered 2:1 there is no point in playing for map control. Just get out there and fight.
Take out the timed power weapon and equipment spawns. That just encourages sweaty play.
Move the focus away from K:D. Experiment with damage based scores.
Add in a handicap system so players can compete equally. Nerf players on kill streaks. Give players OS on spawn if they die without a kill.
Mix things up.
Have dynamic scoring based on in-game performance.
There is so much they could do to put players of all level on a equal playing field and take the sweat out of the game. You can then make matchmaking nothing but connection (random) based.
