Any MLG tips?

MLG is a playlist I struggle in, and I know it generally has better players, but I am definitely doing something wrong considering how much I get destroyed when I play it…

Any tips?

As it is an alternative playtype, if you wish to become better at it, you should dedicate most of your time playing in it. The weapon spawns are different, movement and jump are different, bloom is different and it has no radar, all these things will take adjustments in how you play. There also are also a tremendous amount of instructional videos that could give you specifics that may help.

Immerse yourself, remain calm if you are getting worked, hook-up with people that frequent the playlist and you should see results fairly soon after. Will you be going pro in a month? Nope, but you will start to have improvements and finite details of how you should be playing will become instinct.

Good luck.

Pace your shots, stay calm, don’t spam your trigger, and keep moving.

Stay calm.

I suck in MLG, but it’s mainly because I don’t have a good feel for the maps since I never play them. When I get into firefights with enemies, I tend to spam my trigger, and my headshots end up missing. But if I were to keep calm under pressure, and shoot slower, I’ll get a more steady shot in and win the duel.

Goes for anything, really.

hey

you should check out the youtube channels from bestman and bravo

they have gameplay commentary videos you can learn a lot from

other than that check out http://www.halocouncil.com there are many community members who i think will help you

you can also check out MLGs Videos from the last championships, with commentary from Bravo, Walshy and Gandhi. You can learn a lot from these guys

i hope this helps you a bit

The biggest thing for me is understanding how the spawn system works. All the Slayer maps in MLG have static spawns, meaning they won’t switch. For example, on Sanctuary, there are basically three main areas for an enemy to spawn after you’ve killed them (I’m over-simplifying slightly but oh well): rocks, objective, or snipe hut. It’s critical to understand these spawns so you don’t get caught with your back to the enemy as I so often did when I first started playing MLG. You’ll gradually get used to the different mechanics in the playlist, but above all you need to play smart in MLG.

I’ll play with you sometime if you like. I’m not that good but yeah.

-Learn power weapon spawns and times. Learn to set up when you need to pick them up again so that the other team doesn’t get them.

-Learn the map and gametype. Find out which maps you are weakest and strongest on. Gametype is the same.

-Get used to the settings. This is MLG NBZS and as you know, no bloom or sprint. The movement speeds, jump height and damage are much different from regular MM. Only way to do that is practice (if you want K/D to not be ruined go play customs).

-Get a team going (friends only and they have to be at least decent/motivated to win).

-Gain power positions. Your team is going to want to move smartly through each map and gain the spots that are most advantageous. Places like the higher ground give you better lines of sight and usually provide good cover too. As a bonus all you need to do is aim down if the enemy is below you.

-Learn how to use effective communication. This means team shotting to take fools out quickly, calling out important things like power weapon spawns, one shots and enemy movements around the map. Can also callout if you’re self is weak so that you can be saved.

-Have a gameplan before the match starts. Is determined by gametypes and maps as each one is different.

-Practice. You need to practice in order to get good and not only grow as a player, but as a team. Do exhibition matches with other teams via custom games and even among you’re selfs (2v2 or FFA). Practice communicating, improve on your aim, team synergy etc.

-Stay calm. While everyone has their bad games, do try and not become frustrated. Once you get mad, it’s all over and it’s tough to regain composure. You don’t help you’re self or your team mates if you are crying about unfairness or cussing over your mic. Focus is key.

-Learn player spawns. This is important to know as you’ll know where the opposing team is, even if you don’t necessarily see them. It will also help you with your own team mates when they die so you can regroup and push out of a set up.

-Above all else? Have fun and try hard

MLG is no bloom so I’m not sure pacing your shots is the best strategy…

My friend is actually starting a youtube series called “Road to MLG” where he’s gonna be teaching players that are totally new to MLG how to play it, starting with the basics. He’s already posted a couple gameplays that are pretty helpful to watch if you’re new to the playlist. Here’s one you can start with:

Check out Twitch Tv. They have had a couple of MLG pros streaming live the past couple of nights. You can see the paths they choose under different circumstances, and the spots they like to hold most.

It’s actually a better strategy than you think. Pacing your shots gives you more time to react to what the enemy is doing. Just don’t take too much time between shots or else you’ll give them too much time to kill you.

I play MLG occasionally (usually only if I’m with a full party of friends), and I’m pretty much only good at KotH, so I can’t really give you many good tips. Just keep trying, and watch out for full teams.

My advice, only play if you enjoy it, not because you feel you should. You have nothing to prove to anyone (unless you want to i suppose)

If you already are playing for the joy, great carry on and good luck.

Oh and yes you WILL get mute banned and have zero chance of hooking up a team with randoms.

PaulB0991 on Youtube had a video about “5 beginner tips for the MLG playlist.”

Basically, customs with other good players are your best bet to improve without being frustrated and trolled in the playlist itself.

BTW, I suck at MLG. So take my advice with a grain of salt.

I’ve been playing the MLG playlist mostly alone since it was Team Hardcore in Halo 2. This might sound like a recipe for disaster, and there have been difficult times, but mostly I feel it’s been rewarding. When you get that one great game where you mesh with your random teammates, and you pull out a close win is really the pinnacle of the Halo experience for me.

Here’s what I’ve learned over the years:

  1. Stay calm. There was a lot of anger and frustration in my Halo 2 days, where I’d play for hours without ever getting a decent game. I’ve since learned to just let things roll off, and move on to the next game. You can use your failures as fuel for your drive to play better, but anger will usually make you play much worse (and your teammates won’t appreciate it either).

  2. Think about what you are doing. In default Halo against normal players, you can pretty much just run around, grab weapons, and kill things and everything usually turns out okay. What really separates the great players from the good ones in Halo is their decision making. It’s really important to add a split second of “what should I really do here?” to your movement and shooting patterns. Try to think a move ahead of the other team, set traps, bait weapons. There really is a meta game in Halo that most players don’t ever really tap into.

  3. Adjust to your teammates. If you are going in by yourself, it’s much easier for you to adjust your gameplay then for all 3 of them to adjust to you. Remember, your opponents will generally be better in the MLG playlist, but so will your teammates. Maybe you are used to being the guy who has to drag your team to victory in BTB - this is not necessarily the case in MLG, and it may be better for you to play a support role. Different players have hugely different approaches to the game, and if you can learn to bridge that gap between your teammates and make everyone work together, you will be much more successful.

> Prepare to get mute banned.

This is an important thing to note.

A lot of people in the MLG playlist mute the entire enemy team so that their callouts don’t “leak out” over proximity voice. The correct way to do this is to use the Audio/Video Settings menu, and set voice to “TEAM AND PARTY ONLY”. The way people actually do it is by manually muting everyone on the enemy team, one by one.

The problem with that is that Reach has a unique form of ban: the mute ban. If too many people manually mute you in-game, you will be automatically muted by default (in-game) for everyone you encounter. The ban wears off after a very long time, but no one knows how long. It’s fully automatic with no appeals process.

In short: if you plan on playing the MLG playlist, I hope you habitually use Party Chat, because your ability to use Game Chat could be severely crippled.

If you need more tips. Nak3dHalo that just got uploaded to Road to MLG. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3DdvVdkxE4&feature=g-u-u

I played it a decent amoutn. I’ve played hundreds of matches on MLG. I know all the weapon spawns, all the maps, and all the callouts. It’s just that no matter how hard I try or how confident I get, I seem to struggle. Which is weird to me, because in literally every other playlist I excel.

I’m already mute banned lol.

That’s because every other playlist is filled with bad kids. I don’t even have to play for the first 3 minutes if the game and I can come out doing better than my team mates. People also think bloom and AAs are fine because they work against these kids. It’s just all a mess.

You can think of mlg and arena as the academic class, and the other playlists as a class for special kids. Of course you will excel in a class for special kids and your skills feel challenged in mlg/arena.

I’m not saying the other playlists are just word people who are bad at the game. It’s just that when I play, I don’t feel challenged in the other playlists, just like the OP said.
