Any Legendary Solo Tips?

While I’ve beaten the campaign on legendary on co-op, I have decided to embark on the campaign again, this time on legendary solo. My main motive is to get the Lone Wolf achievement as this is one of the only ones that I haven’t earned, and it will also be the first campaign that I will (hopefully) have completed by myself. So, I was hoping that some of the awesome members of the Halo community could give me some advice. Speed running routes and/or tips? Shortcuts? Heavy weapon locations? A strategy that worked particularly well for you? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Take your time, do not rush, do not waste ammo. Makes runs on lower difficulties to know where you can find good weapons. This is very important. Also, there are some easter eggs that give you a lot of heavy weapons.

Also, Catch skull makes the Knights dumb. Good luck with your Legendary playthrough!

A general rule of thumb would be to Plasma Pistol overcharge + headshot any enemy with shields, so that you can get them out of the way as quickly as possible.

I used the following weapons to easily dispatch the following enemies.

Magnum or Boltshot- Crawler, Grunts and Jackal headshots.

Plasma Pistol + Headshot Weapons- Elites and Knights.

Automatic weapons and grenades- Hunters

Needlers- Knights

When facing the forerunners you consume less ammo by killing them in the following order- Watchers>Crawlers>Knights.

When facing covenant I found more convenient to kill them in tge following order. Grunts on shade turrets> Snipers > Jackals and Grunts > Elites > Hunters( If they bumrush you may be forced to deal with them first.)

Whenever available ghosts are very efective for mid long range killing (Getting close makes you vulnerable to EMP’s and Plasma grenades)

If your shields drop below 1/4 wait for the to recharge and do not bum rush as damage modifiers put you in a disadvantage.

There always small enemy weapon caches on the levels so be sure to take advantage of them.

Never let the AI drive your Vehicles.

These are all general tips that are applicable in nearly all campaign missions.

Some of my tips coming from my experience:

Do not go for other achievements while doing legendary solo. I did this mistake when I got the game first and did my legendary solo run. I did it on Forerunner (carry a UNSC weapon through the whole level) and it was a pain.

Kill Watchers first. They are weak, but are capable of killing you on Legendary easily, and are extremely annoying when they support other enemies.

Cheese Potatoe’s Rule is good, but for Knights I recommend a Overcharge + Plasma Stick Combo. Through the overcharge the Knight usually “flip out” (screaming at you), and give a easy target for a stick.

Building up on that, Enemies who throw grenades have always the same movement during the throw, so with a bit of training they are easy stick victims. But watch out, they can survive it.

Know your enemy. You can say, all enemies have somewhat predictable movements, and with great experience you can use this good. But this takes time.

Like mentioned, kill the small stuff first, as long as bigger enemies do not charge at you. Enemies with Fuel Rod Guns, Incineration Cannons, Beam Rifles, Binary Rifles, Turrets and Vehicles in general have top priority.

As long as the situation does not require anything else, try to have a headshot capable weapon always at your side. You won’t believe how much damage some enemies can take without headshots.

And at last: never give up! You might be reverted to the last checkpoint several times, but you can do it!

PS for short-cuts, you might wanna check out Mythic runs on youtube

And most importantly:
Take your time!

You don’t have to beat the game in a few hours. If you’re stuck in a particular difficult place, just make a break and come back when you’re motivated. Even if it takes days.
Your tunnel vision will be gone and suddenly, your enemies will also be gone soon enough after.

Thanks guys for all the feedback. I’ll hopefully be starting my attempt tomorrow, so I’ll post some updates and specific problems I’m having.

Good advice from everyone so far. I’ll second “play slow” and “learn the levels!”
Also there’s easier ways but if you find yourself without a plasma pistol against knights, pick off the crawlers and use the suppressors they drop. charge and beat.

Its not pretty but it’ll work in a pinch.

You’re doing it wrong then, it was quite easy for me on my first try.

OP, I make videos of getting all Campaign achievements in a single run with speeruns incorporated in them.

Here are some pointers to make Legendary just about as easy as Normal difficulty

1.Catch Skull will make all your enemies throw grenades like no tomorrow and makes assassinations easier on elites and especially knights, just be wary of the grenades though and you’ll be fine

  1. Tilt skull will make you have more damage increase AKA you can survive being stuck with FULL shields, survive ONE direct shot from a binary rifle with FULL sheilds, and survive TWO direct shots from Beam rifles with FULL shields. Best skull IMO, however all the elites, watchers, and knights are essentially immune to Human weapons but are WEAK against COVENANT weapons, Promethean weapons are so so.

Thse two skulls make Legendary so much easier and allows room for error.

Good Luck.

Watching RC Master’s LASO runs made Legendary a cake-walk. They’re not really meant to be guides, but his commentary is super helpful.

Yes, I did it wrong back then, because I just bought the game and started directly on legendary solo. I was not used to fight Knights back then, now it would be easy too.

You can see that in my service record, my first 8 games ever were Campaign Legendary solo.

Definitely. YouTube is pretty helpful for the higher difficulties!

I know it’s been said before, but take your time! It will save you a lot of frustration!

look for alternative routes / don’t fight every enemy. I got through the whole thing skipping many encounters.

Also on the final level, save the incineration cannon in your back pocket for the final enemies just before you get to diadact. Easiest section ever just spamming incineration and the game is done lol

Lay low. Be aware. Focus on objectives. Make every shot count.

Most importantly, don’t get frustrated and take breaks.

Auto Sentry rocks on Legendary. No joke.

Well I’ve made it through the first two missions and am about 1/3 of the way through Forerunner and to be honest I haven’t had too much trouble yet. However, I was wondering what the best way to kill the knights is? They take up so much ammo.

The easiest for me is to throw a pulse at them, making sure I will hit them with it, they vulnerable for like a second so I punch their back.

Make sure to turn Catch on, it will make them vulnerable for like forever. They will start throwing grenades at you non-stop. Run behind them when they are throwing one and kill them.

One of my tricks for knights is to have a precision weapon and shotgun-like weapon. From a distance, headshot the knights until you make him angery enough to do the teleport-in-your-face-melee attack, side step to dodge his melee and swap to the shotgun and unload on him… Good ol’ fashioned bait an switch!

I almost Always have a plasma pistol and any precision weapon I can get my hands on though. I sometimes pass on power weapons because I can do more damage with an EMP + headshot combo and/or a well placed sticky grenade. Needler works wonders on knights too!

YES the auto sentry ability is a godsend on legendary! Active camo is virtually worthless. The hard light shield is also a lot of help. I like to wait for hunters to use their canons, then deflect the plasma blast right back at them with the hard light shield. My other favorite tactic for hunters, and I’ve done this same thing in EVERY halo game, when they charge you you charge them and jump over their heads, quickly turn around and unload as many rounds as you can into their backs (weak spot), repeat this until the hunter goes down.

Use the overcharged plasma pistol EMP on vehicles too. Stops em dead in their tracks for a few seconds allowing to hijack or stick it with a grenade.

Patience and take your time… Kill from long distance when ever you can! Skip fights when ever you can. Always aim for the head. Watch YouTube speed runs too. I learned a lot of useful tricks doing that! Like how to skip 80% of the mission shutdown, and ejecting tons of covie squads out into space instead of fighting them on composer.

Good luck

Against covenant just use a plasma pistol and anything that gets headshots.

Against prometheans just spam lightrifle like a madman.

That’s how I did it and I had little trouble until the very last fight.
