I just had a question if anyone is willing to answer or discuss, why can’t the flood infect a grunt or a jackal? Has this been explained somewhere before?
It would be interesting to see any of these aliens in their infected form. Provide your answer or opinions below.
You may be luckier here ; ).
Actually I don’t know the answer. Gameplay-wise, maybe it’s because it would be too long to create so many enemies that wouldn’t bring anything special. And lore-wise, maybe they are too weak to survive the infection (?).
If I recall correctly Grunts and Jackals are generally not turned to combat forms, but instead they use their biomass for carrier forms, or other non combative roles, like helping make a grave mind.

They were originally going to be combat forms in CE but bungie didn’t have enough time to programme them. So they just made up the biomass excuse.

Pretty much this.
They don’t really have a lot of mass (they’re very tiny), so what mass they do possess is most likely put to use in creating other Flood forms that require various sources of biomass, such as carrier forms and eventually Graveminds.

I just finished reading the Flood yesterday and that was the reason they gave.

Kig-Yar and Unggoy can be turned into Flood Combat forms in some circumstances, as Halo Wars demonstrated. The “Biomass excuse” was invented by Bungie when they didn’t have the time to programme Grunt and Jackal Combat forms. I think Grunt and Jackals rarely make suitable Combat forms because of their smaller stature, strength and limited amounts of stored calcium; hence why they’re often turned into Carrier forms. But should the need arise, Grunts and Jackals will be used as Combat forms.

You beat me to it.
Here’s some images of Grunt and Jackal Flood Combat forms.
While we’re discussing Flood, am I the only one who things the contained Flood on Lockdown are actually Forerunner Combat forms? They totally look Forerunner to me due to their size, humanoid appearance and lack of prominent noses.

I’ve always assumed they’re Forerunners. Granted, their feet are nothing like the Didact’s so they probably aren’t Warriors, let alone Prometheans.
Thanx guys for all of your responses. All these years wondering and it never occured to me to ask the halo community. I know that probably the main reason why there are no combat form for these two species is because of development time and resource. You guys gave me the “lore reasons” wich was bothering me to not know as I repleyed MCC.

Wow nice find on those grunt and jackal combat form. Also, you may have a point on the lockdown flood. I never really payed atention to them, but given that Lockdown was a foreunner research facility…you may be right.
Ok thanks for all of this.

They seem to have 6 fingers and I am fairly certain it was hinted before that forerunners have 6 fingers.

Partially correct. Some forms of Warrior-Servants have 6 fingers, not all Forerunners. Warrior-Servants were most likely to get infected for obvious reasons. As for the whole feet thing, remember: the Didact did crazy mutations to himself in attempt to be immune to the Flood, so his physiology is in no way representative of most Warrior-Servants.

Yeah and I think maybe builders too. I distinctly remember panels in Halo 3 on the Ark designed for a 6 fingered hand. I’ll try to find the image i’m referring to and link it.

EDIT: yeah my memory is bad, it’s halo 2 actually here is the link. http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Forerunner_hand
EDIT EDIT: apologize for the double post.
Let me clear this up.
Grunts and jackals CAN be infected by the flood, as demonstrated in Halo Wars. BUT, because of the events in Halo Wars, the flood soon learned that grunts and jackals make very poor combat forms. Hence why we see them pretty much giving up any attempt to make them into combat forms in the future. As explained above, they are instead used for other biomass purposes.
The flood do use grunts and jackals. Since they’re too weak to be combat forms, they’re used a carrier forms and biomass to create graveminds. In Halo 2, I believe that there are carrier forms with green jackal shields in them.
Jackals, Grunts, and Drones do not have sufficient biomass to be converted into a combat form. It is also likely that certain ones specifically the Drones, lack sufficient intelligence to be converted into a Flood Form, as they possess a hive mind that may be very difficult to cut-off from each other without permanently destroying the individual’s neural network, which the Flood requires to control most sentient life forms in conjunction with their nervous system. Gameplay-wise, the size of Grunts and Jackals would have made it very difficult to animate their assimilation, due to their physiology. Infected Drones do not exist since that would have turned them into Flying Ranged Forms. The horror!
