As far as a ranking system in Halo 4 I am 50/50 on the issue. Halo 3’s ranking system was alright but far from awesome.
I’m more of a kind of player who enjoyes playing with one certian friend. Me and him always run duo in games like Battlefield 3 and Halo 3 and etc. I enjoy team doubles very much but was ruined in Halo 3 after everyone wanted to boost and derank. Halo reach’s team doubles was just bad. You either get matched with newer players or people not at your skill level.
Does Halo 4 need a ranking system? Not really. Look at how popular games like Modern warfare is. Was #1 on xbox live for the longest time (replaced by minecraft last month yaya!). Does mw3 have a ranking system or even truskill involved? Hell nah. Battlefield 3 ranked amoung the game I’ve played the most and it dosen’t have a ranking system. I play it for the next awesome 600 meter headshot or the next jet kill or unlock. not my rank.
The main argument about Halo 4 is it won’t have large population like Halo 2/3 without a ranking system. Which is not true. The reason Halo Reach failed was because of what Halo Reach was. Bloom, armor lock, grenades of doom, jetpacks, unbalanced truskill, etc. I don’t need to dwell any deeper into my issues with reach. One reason I disliked reach was player on player fights didn’t seem impactful or meaningful. In Halo 2/3 fights felt immersive and you actually could take on 4 people if you had the skill. 2 vs 1 fights in reach always ended badly if you were playing people who knew what they are doing. Halo 3 on the other hand made 2 vs 1 more common place to come out on top if you were better or had the right weapons. Halo 2/3 made you feel like a walking tank and Reach made me feel like a ODST. Hence my gamertag ‘Lonewolf’. I enjoyed running around halo 2 feeling like a badass lonewolf who ruled the battlefield.
Thats why Halo reach failed to me. That is my opinion so you can take it with a grain of salt and just not question it. this topic is not about Halo reach anyway. My fault for going off topic but you must know the past to prevent future mistakes.
I have faith in 343 making a ranking system to make everyone happy not just “try hards”. I haven’t read much up on the issue so I’m not a expert on the issue. I’ve heard from many people a “visable” ranking sytem will come soon. maybe Day 1 or a month after who knows. I personaly wouldn’t mind seeing where I rank in a playlist compared to the world. A ranking system does had value but when it becomes abused like Halo 3’s then i don’t want any part of it. Boosting will always be a problem but if you create a ranking system to near perfection then it won’t spread like wildfire as in Halo 3.

dit: I know this topic has been beaten like a dead horse but i just wanted to get my view out there.
CoD was number 1 on XBL for its accessibility, not it’s lack of a skill rank system. It’s remained popular because we are in an age of ADHD gamers who love seeing new unlocks and rewards pop up on the screen every 5 seconds.

and don’t forget 12 year olds.
I don’t know where battlefield 3 ranks amoung games played on live but that game takes skill. It does have unlocks every now and then but i don’t play for unlocked. I already had everything i watned at lv 20and i’m nearing Rank 3 (over 45).
> My thoughts exactly. But we do need a trueskill system to get matched with players of similar skill.
halo reach never felt like they inculded truskill. I always get matched up with players who are way under my skill level or over. i’ll get those good 50-48 matches but those are a dime a dozen.
Who said they have to use a Halo 3-like ranking system?
My idea for a skill-based ranking system goes from ranks 1-99. Everyone’s rank is visible. You go up and down in rank depending on two factors. The first factor is if you win or lose a game. A quit is an automatic loss. This factor is slightly more important to your rank than the second. The second factor is how well you do. This is fairly easy to judge for slayer games, and fairly difficult to judge for objective games, but it wouldn’t be too difficult to get a rough idea. At the beginning, when you are low ranks, the system should be made so that it is difficult to rank down. At the higher ranks, it should be made so that it is much easier to rank up and down, depending on how well you do. This would make it more competitive as you leveled up higher, which makes sense for obvious reasons. It would also get exponentially more difficult to level up as you got higher, which would make a rank of 99 more difficult to achieve than a rank of 50. You would be matched in matchmaking with people around your level. Unlike Halo 3, this rank is the same through all ranked playlists, and not different for each ranked playlist. Boosting and cheating wouldn’t work well because a) de-ranking would be useless in a system like this and because b) playing with a higher-level player wouldn’t make you level up faster if this was implemented properly. Sorry if I explained this poorly, it really isn’t that complex of a system.

Needless to say it really didn’t need a skill ranking system to be popular anyway.

battlefield 3 doesnt take any skill really its like COD now I play on pc. Play arma that takes skill not the stupid -Yoink- dayz -Yoink- play the real game.
Just because a game is popular doesn’t mean that the game is high quality.
Without a visible ranking system players will play the campaign, spartan ops, and have no motivation afterwards. The visible ranking system provides that motivation for players.
