Annoying campaign fail: designer level

Does anyone else find it annoying in the campaign when the game designers decorate the remainders of supposed intense battles with absolute piles of friendly casualties? Reach was bad about it in the sabre base and later in the “last stand” before going to find Halsey where there were tons of dead marines littered everywhere.

The thing that is most annoying about these scenes and that make them completely unbelievable is the utter lack of ANY enemy casualties. I know the Reach marine is pretty useless, but youre telling me that 20+ marines in a single room armed with assault rifles, DMR’s, and shotguns failed to kill even a single elite? Or not even an elite how about a frikken grunt or a jackal even??

Reach wasnt the only one to do this of course. Halo has a history of this: in halo 2 they decorated the Cairo station with dead marines everywhere, no dead covies. They also decorated levels with dead elites during the great schism, no dead brutes. Again in Halo ODST there were the piles of dead elites without any dead brutes. In halo 3 a dead marine was like a piece of art based on how they tossed them here and there. Reach really went overboard and tried to pretend the marines were actually fighting back en masse against something with 0% efficiency.

We know the marines are not the most effective soldiers most of the time, but if/when these kinds of scenes are replicated in future games, please throw in an enemy casualty here and there to make this crap just a little more believable and a lot less stupid

Actually, I’m pretty sure you can find a few dead brutes alongside some Sangheili corpses in ODST, but I understand your point nonetheless.

Strange how dozens of Spartans in MJOLNIR Mark V were unable to kill even one Covie in Lone Wolf.

I got confused when you said Sabre Base and Halsey in the same sentence, then I’m like oh… he means Sword Base. LOL

The excuse for that was the Spec Ops Elites and the General just came in and it wasn’t even a competition.

but that’s besides the point. there are many other situations where a dead Grunt should have been at least sighted. there are some times where there are enemy casualties also, but not very often. I agree OP.

nice twin threads

but I agree with you OP

Yes, but that wasn’t because humans.

It was to show the “Brutes Vs Elites” (and when Buck ask Dare about “why are so many elites corpes? is almos as if they fighted each other…” “Classified”)

Well I mean this may be hard not to do in Halo 4 considering that all Promethean enemies either explode or turn to ash when they’re killed…

Lol well the lone wolf thing I thought was interesting from like a theme or lesson perspective, i didnt take that one seriously.

& yes Sword base for Halsey, but I did mean the sabre base as well. Played it just now, tons of dead marines everywhere as you casually stroll to your space figther thingy.

If I remember correctly, humanity was able to hold their ground on, well, ground engagements. The Covenant’s superior starships usually ended up overwhelming them regardless, however.

Point is; we should definitely see some Marine corpses accompanied by several deceased Jackals and Grunts.

the easy answer is gameplay, you reconize where you have been by dead enemies. I didnt realize it until now but when playing Halo 1 with all the rooms and routes if i went a certain way and saw dead grunts id automaticly turn around and go another way. Its one of those things you use without even knowing it.

Indeed, the Army rock! but the Navy… well… lets see what Romeo would say… “Navy got its butt kicked.”…

But yes, there should be Covies corpses…

I gave up on Lone Wolf after trying out a modded save of it. There’s far too many inconsistencies.

Where the hell did Covies get so many Generals?!

It’d have been more believable and more appealing if they were Ultras/Majors with swords or Zealots (this would be the perfect time to deploy them). Firefight lacks ‘sword Elites only’ option as well as Zealots but has General (which is barely different from Lone Wolf, only instead of concussion rifles, it’s fuel rod guns and plasma cannons).

Personally, I’d prefer if the General rank was demoted to easter egg exclusive (like when doing the Tribute Room).

-They’re never recognized by UNSC as high priority compared to Zealots (like the one on TotS)
-They never appear in cutscenes whereas Zealots, majors, and even minors have appeared in cutscenes

I think Bungie just put Generals in to steal the spotlight from Zealots. That’s just -Yoinking!- messed up.

Anyways, I agree OP.

But if I have to bring up enemy casualties in Reach, it’d be:

  1. that dead Ultra on LNoS right before the Sabre launch (apparently killed by a shotgun trooper)

  2. those dead Elite majors and Grunts at the ship boarding part

  3. the 2 Zealots killed by Emile

Apparently, the dead Ultra is an easter egg… if that’s true, then that makes only 2 prior enemy causalities by UNSC since the second instance was due to space warfare or atmospheric pressure.

Like I’ve said countless times, Reach fails hard in the immersion category.

If this is the kind of result Marines have against Elites, I hate to the see the bloody massacre of Marines against Promethean Knights…

In all honesty, I agree with you. I wouldn’t say I have the same amount of apparent frustration towards the matter but all the same, yes, if some a large number of Marines are seen dead in a area level then it would be nice to see a portion of the enemy they took down fighting as well.

Lol poor marines. At least their bodies will just disintegrate fighting knights so we dont have to be ashamed of their worthlessness by seeing dead marine landscaping. I was playing long night of solace last night, its always annoyed me but i decided to add a post about it this time

Yeah XD. It’s even more irritation for me as I’m one of those players who trys to keep them alive. I don’t know why, sometimes I just do it for the challenge and other times I hold some sort of strange protective attraction to them, it’s like Chief watching over the vulnerable. Speaking of which; Forward Unto Dawn.

I do that too. Sometimes they can really help out in a fight.

Give them some sort of power weapons and manage to stay out of their way they can be somewhat useful.

Give them power weapons and your passenger seat and bingo! They have always been pretty good shooters in the vehicles anyway which is something you don’t see in many FPS games.

What if… The Covenant corpses were removed by the surviving covenant soldiers for burial purposes, and the Marines were just left there to rot?

That’s what I always thought about the revisted areas of The Maw.

This is actually a very good point.

I would think that the way to go about this would be to place the dead enemies in way that you can recognise you havnt previously killed them. Things like an elite sitting dead against a wall with his energy sword laying in his hand on the floor. Things like that.

You wouldn’t be able to use this example to often as the experience would wear off but putting eery music for example to a room filled with dead bodies would also tell the player, ‘they are meant to be here’.

I do agree that it would give the game a more realistic and leveled out experience and I would like to see it, but if it doesnt happen im not gonna flip xP its not THAT big of a deal to me lol
