Anniversary Firefight: A depressing realisation

According to the most recent update, Anniversary Firefight ‘contains our most popular Firefight variants’, which is to say Arcade Fistfight, Arcade Nadefight, Arcade Rocketfight, Arcade Sniperfight, Arcade FRGfight, Arcade Plasmafight, Arcade Fiestafight and Arcade Arcadefight. I am excited to play the map from which a Halo survival mode was inspired, although I think something may have been lost in the translation to Reach matchmaking. Infinite ammunition, lives and constant explosions might draw the focus a tad from the ODSTs, chain gun Warthog and the spirit of the map in general.

Trust me, we’ve discussed this. And 343i knows how we’re feeling (pretty pissed).

Challenging Customs Firefight>Pushover/Annoying Matchmaking Firefight.

It’ll be okay.

I don’t plan on actually playing the Firefight Playlist for it, just in a Firefight Lobby with a friend or something, the playlist needs to be changed to feature a classic FF Gametype or something before I consider it, otherwise you just have FF Arcade on one map.

I can see little justification for failing to include what should characterise the Firefight experience - and this map in particular. Players should be given opportunity to play what they want to play through the inclusion of Score Attack, Limited and Arcade.

While you may be right, I don’t think that even those gametypes would satisfy us for the “Firefight experience,” as you call it. Unless 343i decides to do some revamping of the gametype settings away from the default and more toward a challenging but enjoyable experience, like that provided by custom gametypes that both you and I have made, I don’t think it would be a justified experience either way.

As ThreeSixXero said, “Challenging Customs Firefight>Pushover/Annoying Matchmaking Firefight”, a view I think we can/could extend to Limited (if that is what you meant by a ‘Classic FF Gametype’).

Why must the Firefight population play a 15 minute arcade session, when Firefight was christened a survival mode? Alternatively, why should a survival mode, should it become a reality, be against frustratingly dull foes?

I have been playing with the Firefight options of late, using the logic ‘strong [or ‘unfair’] enemies are not only a pain in the -Yoink- to fight, they are boring’ (example of my efforts). A great deal of so far untapped potential was included in Reach’s Firefight options. I encourage people to try and come up with fun settings for Firefight, to better fit a classic interpretation, or in the very least get away from the bullet sponges Limited confronted us with.

The Cartographers seem vaguely interested in rethinking Firefight. This playlist from 343 suggests they may not be on the same wavelength, which I hope is not the case.

It would have at least seemed like they were trying. “Anniversary” Firefight is nothing but Arcade Fight on one map. We should at least have seen a Classic FF gametype with no Ammo Boxes. But no. They conceeded to the lowest common denominator: the ones who only play for easy credits, commendations and armor and not for the EXPERINCE.

I’ll just stick to FF Custom Games. But as far as I know, a lot of my friends won’t be getting Anniversary for a while (Skyrim is like -Yoink!-, I’ve heard), and because of Modern Warfail 3. So, looks like it’s just me for now. sigh

SMH

Maybe they just need a proper firefight but to be honest all the maps in Reach are too small, I miss Odst version of firefight because that was more challenging.

Arcadefight is a lot of fun, but I also wish that they had the more ODST styled FF for this map. Guess that I’m going to have to do that on my own with friends rather than in the MatchMaking Lobby

i, for one, like playing firefight custom games, firefight matchmaking is really only a means of getting creds, plus, it lags for me, due to me having a lousy internet provider

Exactly. I can only have an enjoyable Firefight game with a mere fraction of my friends list due to the lockstep networking model used. The number becomes significantly smaller when considering many are currently interested elsewhere.

It is not reasonable to except players to take it to custom games if they want to get the proper experience. Firefight matchmaking contains invaluable options like ‘prefer good connection’ which should be taken advantage of.

Perhaps we need to get a Firefight movement going? :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m game.

Maybe. Speaking of which, I need to wear my ‘Procastinators unite tomorrow’ shirt more often.

Edit: Out of curiosity what did you try when creating a FF experience? It is interesting to get ideas out there.

Dudes, I’d be all over this. I already have one draft gametype suggestion and close to a draft of another, and have ideas for a third. :stuck_out_tongue:

Please PM me if you start a thread.

As people are picking up on this I may as well add that weapon management and map movement are thrown out of the window when equipped with infinite ammo for power weapons and overshields. It hardly matters what map you’re playing with some/all Arcade variants.

Basically, the premise was to:
Promote variety
Speed up gameplay
Add a challenge that isn’t annoying

The upped movement speeds was a given, so that was the first thing that I put into the gametype. I also got rid of loadouts and simply gave the player a versatile weapon and a versatile AA: the Magnum and Evade. This was to add a sense of skill to the experience as well as forcing the player to scavenge for weapons, thus promoting the variety loadouts were intended to allow for.

The next step was to change the damage and resistance ratios so that, while that Elite you’re shooting can take a hit and dish them out too, enemies aren’t a chore to take down. AI are also good at shooting but, for the first few rounds, they have lower awareness. The allows for a difficulty jump when the latter rounds come along, but what the Player has collected from the previous rounds (including the occasional run in with heretics) should prove to aid against such a harder enemy.

This worked quite well on Unearthed, my favorite FF yet, and I hope it will work on Oh Four as well.

Here’s how I would have done it.

Odd voting round:

  1. Firefight
  2. Random Arcade Gametype
  3. Random Limited Gametype

Even voting round:

  1. Legendary Firefight
  2. Gruntpocolypse / Fiestafight / Crash Site / Generator Defense (Random)
  3. Arcadefight / Firefight Limited (Random)

But that’s just me.
