I have played about 200 1v1 games of Halo Wars (those in last couple of months). My TrueSkill has went up from 0 to 36. I mainly play as Anders.
Question
I have not figured out how to beat good Brute Chieftain on Blood River with Anders. In this match up BC seems to have an advantege. With temple + warehouse + 2 x brutes BC can take both forerunner supply elevators in about 1 min 50 secs. After that he has a huge economy advantage to vortex hogs and flamers.
How to counter this?
Failures
Barracs first build gets 3 x marines out in 30 + 3 x 8 = 54 seconds. One can a) use pelicans (200 resources) to transport those or b) wait until they walk there. A) takes 200 extra resources from already poor economy. B) one can only hope that brute chopper is not ramming poor marines.
Other builds seems to be too slow. BC gets both elevators first. Then BC can use vortex to destroy any incoming flamers and hogs.
Gunner hogs fail miserably against brutes in 2 x watchtower + 1 x supply elevator.
first of all scout his base. If he goes temple first you need to camp his lift with warthogs really early. This causes him to walk back with his chieftain or else you will ram his first brute squad. this gives you more time. In the mean time you can go barracks first and get your own hook. After that I like to spam flamers , to try and get the hooks and make warthogs aswell. Attack his base with hogs, which forces him to make turrets or even recall and gives you time to get the hooks. Work your way to gauss/hornets = win.
Im goin to support klicka claka on this one. Barracks 1st with no pelican. Build 2 hogs and 4 marines. First use your hog to pick up 1 click, when your second hog is done building send both to his tele. Keep 1 at his tele while the other one picks up clicks next to his base. Ram when units come out. By this time you 4 marines should be out and your 3rd hog. Keep your first 2 marines close together with your 3rd hog, so if he rams you your hog can counter ram thus trapping him for your marines grenades. Send the 3 marines to your money hook while 1 goes to your reactor. Let the one who goes to your reactor die, just click gunner\flashbang before he does. While you are getting the hook, use your spare warthogs to pick up resources there are a ton and it is absolutely vital you get them. If you managed to dominate the on map crates then by the end of the game yu will have picked up more then 1000 then him. Dominating the on map resources is sooooo vital on any map when your UNSC vs COV. Keep building hogs\flamers, you should never have more then 100 resources in the first 3 min of this match up. Once you have gunner put an inf in your hook and secure it, also send just 1 unit up to his. Hopefully he will have fought you over the hooks while you got both techs. Once you have grend\gauss harass his base while using your napalm\oxide to kill his units and regain hook control. Even if he has the both money hooks you can win by getting both reactors (even if its just for a split second) and balancing out your eco with on on map crates (again very very vital vs COV)
Build-barrack, 3x supply pads, reactor. Then when you upgrade to fortress build a war factory in corralation to his units.

I usually go barracs first on this map. I have not thought that I can take the reactor with 4th marine. It seems to be much more unit handling with UNSC than it is with Covenant on this map. I will try your suggestions. Maybe - at least - the lower level players will fall with that.
I found bb2010 comment about this match up from the another forum saying “At the highest level, Brute should beat Anders on this map at least 90% of the time…” Does not sound promising, but I hope someone to prove him wrong.
I think this one is my worst map and match up. I also dislike the Blood Gulch because of all the managing of flamers/hogs/marines to take hooks/keep hooks/harass enemy base. My arms are not very wild. Anyway, this match up - against any leader - seems to be quite fair.
You dont keep the hook with the 4th marine, only secures it a second for quick gunner/flashbang. Then you secure with a marine and an extra hog or two. But also do the same for his reactor hook, send 1 marine over quick w
othing else. I cant tell you how many high level anders vs brute games i won by being able to have his reactor for tech 3 for a split second and won the game with either oxide/cani/gauss.
In any covi game the goal is to find the balance between flamer/hogs/mainline units. The flamers engage the leaders and take hooks. Hogs pick up resources, harass bases, clear expos, forces recals and turrets. Mainline unit defeats his units and destroys his base. Flamers and hogs can even be your mainline unit, in situation when COV goes air.
Also BB’s comment was refering to games verse very very high level players and does not match up to your sitution. I dont start any game thinking I have a disadvantage or advantage. Pirth is a good example, vs Mighty Icy if either of us makes a mistake we lose. There is nothing but you preventing YOU from winning, dont ever make excuses for a loss. If you make an excuse you’ll never learn why you lost. Everything is trial and error, risk vs consequence.

Yes, Brute should win because vortex, jackals and using the chopper for ramming early infantry make it too easy to secure both elevators. Don’t give up though.
Reactor 1st, 2 gunner hogs will actually counter temple 1st, especially if they don’t make an immediate turret. They will easily kill the first brute, and can keep warehouses from coming up once you add in a 3rd hog. However, a good brute should send his chopper immediately towards your base to scout for this. If they know it’s coming, it’s an auto loss for you.
Barracks 1st is the safest build, but it starts you at a disadvantage vs Brute right from the start. It’s still probably the best, most consistent build to use at your level to make you a better player. Follow Wild Arms advice on how to execute this build. Another alternative to hogs and flamers is double barracks flamers after you get flashbang (marine in reactor). It should do okay against an opponent that doesn’t go early wraiths or banshees.

I hate when anders does 2x barracks on chasms. mind you it was the first and the last time I’d seen it.
