Analysis of Strafing Time in Halo Games

Ever wondered if it takes more time to strafe in Reach than in Halo 2? Do strafes in Halo 4 feel faster to you?

You might be surprised by the results of this experiment. Check out this analysis that compares strafing times from Halo 1, 2, 3, Reach, and 4.

Halo Analysis: Strafing

Thanks for the 404 file not found link.

Error. And to think I was interested in strafing for a minute.

Fixed it!

look man but i’m a simple person, can you just whack in some funky 80’s music and get morgan freeman to do a voice over and put it on youtube?

pretty interesting . . . The 100 degree view you said was a win . . . definitely win. I knew there was something different about CE

Really interesting read, really crazy how much faster the game feels with the wide fov. Doubt they would do anything to change it now though, unfortunately. Can still hope and plea your case though, eh? Good luck.

So one of the main reasons I think Reach worse than the other Halo’s is a lie?!

In fairness, I didn’t make that video, I only linked to it show to show how much difference a wider field of view makes on perceived speed. Also, depending on your TV and whether you were playing split screen, Halo 1 had a field of view anywhere from 70 to 108. Check out this article for more information on the differences in field of view across the Halo games.

If you thought Reach felt slower because strafes took longer, then you would be incorrect. I actually thought the same thing you did before I performed the experiment, it’s a very common misconception. But this analysis proves that strafing time has nothing to do with how fast the game feels. All the Halo games take virtually the same amount of time to strafe.

You mentioned something about aim assist affecting the perception of the strafe. Would be interesting to know which game has the most aim assist, any way to test that?

Aim assist is very complicated, the purpose of the code is to make it as transparent as possible so that you never notice it kicking in.

The closest thing I’ve seen to a test of aim assist is this video comparison of Halo 1 and 2, so it might be a good starting point.
