Before we start, I will admit I am a bit of a newer Halo fan. I started with Reach, then I played 4 and went back and played the original trilogy (Which I loved). Not gonna lie, however, Chief’s 4/5 armor was my favorite. I am not defending 343’s other art decisions, I.e. the prometheans and multiplayer armors, which I agree looks overly busy, plasticky, and overall very “generic” sci fi. However I personally think 343 nailed Chief’s 4/5 armor. It looked highly militaristic and “tactical”, like he was a walking M1 Abrams, and in the cutscenes he looks menacing and is an absolute unit, towering over the other characters. I like the Infinite armor, (besides from the weird patterning they did on the lower breastplate) but 4in general the OG armor looked too simple and it looked really dated.

Fair enough. I don’t hate any of the armor iterations we’ve seen. I just prefer the Mark VI we see in H2 and H3. I actually don’t like the fact that Chief looks like a giant tank in H4/5. It’s like the technology went backwards. Instead of getting sleeker and slimmer, we got bulkier and larger. The armor in the OG trilogy looked like a minimalist, militaristic design for future armor. The armor in the new games looks over-engineered and difficult to operate.
What I’m trying to say is the old armor looks more advanced because it is smaller and more streamlined than the new armor.

Yeah, miniaturization of technology and whatnot, cramming more into a smaller space and streamlining things.
I liked both designs though, and I look forward to seeing what new things we might end up getting, like how Reach added Gungnir and Halo 4 added Wetwork and Venator - three of my favorite helmets to sport and then 5 added Argus. Bonus points for Linda wearing it! Said it before and I’ll say it again, but Linda’s by #1 top favorite Spartan ever.
I kept an open mind when Chief’s armor changed in Halo 4. I didn’t think it looked terrible, although I never quite liked the shoulder pauldrons, but aside from that I thought the armor looked ok. But I just want to say I love how his armor looks in Infinite.
His armor was a pretty good iteration if we’re talking of 343i’s overall art style in 4 and 5. But honestly if you like the armor then that’s cool man. I like his Mark V(B) (I know he didn’t wear it but it’s overall the same armor as the Mark V(A)) though I know some prefer the Halo 3 version or Classic CE versos of his armor. Though I think what’s universally agreed upon is that the Mark Alpha (Halo 5) helmet was bad.
While I do like H4/5’s helmet, my main problem with it was the lack of a defined silhouette, (which is important in a character commonly referred to as the face of XBOX), which made him sort of clash with Doomguy’s stance and positioning too much, and the overabundance of parts and components layered onto the helmet. It also didn’t help that the upper chest-piece in 4 and 5 resembles a toilet seat (sorry if this ruins the design for you).
So, it is quite refreshing that the armour has been simplified to retain the classic silhouette, but it would be lovely to see 343’s old design as an armour set in multiplayer.
I think they did an amazing job. They took the H3 armour and slightly changed it making it look slightly more modern and intimidating. My only complaint with the H4/5 armours was how it kind looked a little too disjointed to me. Too many little pieces separated from the rest of the armour. The Infinite one looks way more solid and tanky. I actually think he looks the best he ever has and I didn’t think I’d ever say that after Bungie left.
I wasn’t a fan of the Halo 4 armour and even more so of how it was explained in the lore about it as it seemed a bit contrived with the very limited resources and such at their disposal but halo 5 armour looked brilliant kudos to them for making it look great however Halo 2 remaster probably my favourite until its gets to the point where blur studios remasters Halo 3 and we get that HD looking armour.
Hi it’s Illi,
Welcome to halo. I’m a veteran of Halo. I have to say, I think like other people who have been in the halo franchise for years now… Infinite is going to be awesome
Kind Regards,
Illi
The 4/5 armor really bugged me. I hated the mouth on the helmet and the shoulder pauldrons the most. Also the H5 boots. Everything else I was cool with. I’m just glad there’s a return to a more classic looking suit for Infinite.

I too love his new armor. When I first saw it I thought to myself “hey that’s a fantastic compromise!”. It’s a little of the new with a little of the old, plus one or two EU lore details thrown in to make the lore fans happy (the “117” on the chest plate made me smile). Seemed like the best option for 343. So I was more than a little shocked to come to Waypoint and find people that couldn’t stand it lol. Gotta love the internet…
I forget where I saw it, but there was a post somewhere on a halo page where it was showing master chiefs armor is a mix of legends forward onto dawn and all the halo games. I personally think that is awesome.
As a Bungie-era fan I am really happy with what we’ve seen of the art direction of infinite so far. It’s really refreshing to see them actually innovate off the original art style without taking it in an entirely different direction and ruining it like they did last time.
