I really do like Ground Pound. It’s fun to do, has a good tell so that it doesn’t feel super cheap to die from, and fits well in the sandbox. I could see it meshing well with classic Halo, which to me is a good indicator that it’s a pretty good addition to the series. Could it use some more refining so that it isn’t as powerful? Probably, but we don’t have to just remove it.
I’m worried that 343i has entered a “trial” period with a lot of the changes recently. It feels they are trying things out for Halo 6. I hope that this doesn’t mean that they want to remove Ground Pound in Halo 6.
I don’t have very many issues with ground pound, honestly. I’ll admit I’ve had instances where I feel my position would have saved me from being killed by it and then it doesn’t, but otherwise my criticism lies mostly in Spartan Charge. The hard tracking and knock-back from that annoys me to no end.

100%. Spartan Charge sucks, and I’m happy that it’s being removed from HCS stuff. I just think that removing Ground Pound is unnecessary.
Yeah I wouldn’t mind at all ground pound staying in the game… It’s just Spartan charge that needs to go or be nerfed. I have always said you shouldn’t be able to charge while being shot. You shouldn’t get a “get out of jail free card” for sprinting around the map like a mad man.

If anything Ground Pound could be tweaked, but even then, I’m not sure what you could really do to it without nerfing it and making it less viable to use. Especially considering more times than not, people who generally attempt pulling off a good ground pound get knocked out of the sky, or shot at instantly after hitting the ground.

The only things I could think of are maybe make the splash damage area smaller, and making it louder so people know what’s going on around them. If the charge time or damage are reduced I think that the ability would be next to useless.
I don’t have any major problems with ground pound, but it can be annoying at times. However, I disagree that it meshes well with classic Halo. I couldn’t imagine it working in any games other than with advanced movement.

The way that I look at it is basically this, 2016 DOOM is basically what I want Halo movement to be. It’s fast and precise and lacks sprint. It’s great. I could absolutely see Ground Pound in that set up. It would feel “right”. I don’t know how else to say it.
I think this is a more popular opinion than you realize. I have seen a good amount of competitive players talking about how they wish it wasn’t being removed. It is more about movement for them than the ability to kill someone with GP. Their argument is that it is so much a part of the meta that it shouldn’t be removed. It being used for things like grabbing OS on Empire and the snipe tower on Coliseum.
I don’t really have an issue with that since I don’t use those moves enough to really have it be a part of my game that I will miss. Also, you say it had a “good tell” and thereby dying from it feels less cheap. That is not my experience at all. Yes, I can hear someone charging it up, but if I am fighting down in the pit on Empire (where I see it used the most) then I really have no counter for it. I have numerous experiences also where I see them coming at me and can do nothing about it. I try to shoot them down or thrust out of the way, and the speed along with the magnetism of GP allows for them to prevail.
This is only being implemented in HCS. If I am going to die repeatedly I would rather it be from someone out gunning me or a good melee. Not some, in my opinion, easy/cheap way because it makes them feel like a Spartan. There’s so many worried about movement suffering. There is still Sprint, Thrust, Slide, and Clamber. More than enough to maneuver and keep that fast pace that a lot of people like in Halo 5.
Well, I can’t wait for this change to happen. It will be because of this and TS2 being implemented that I will be playing the HaloWC playlist for the whole summer season. I hope it doesn’t return for Halo 6 as well, at least for one playlist anyway.
I actually like ground pound cause it does seem to take a bit more thinking to use than Spartan charge, I ain’t the biggest fan of removing it for HCS but I can see why as it can lead to some plays that seem a bit absurd for an ability everyone has (leading to multiple people dying in one ground pound cause of how strong it is can completely change the game).
A better unpopular opinion would’ve been if you said you like Spartan Charge. I don’t really mind Ground Pound even though 343 basically admitted that it was just a gimmick ability in I believe one of their Sprint episodes, but I don’t think we needed them to point that out to see it. My main gripe with GP is that it takes priority over meleeing in the air which is ridiculous.
I like having both of them purely for the moving aspect around the map. I use SC as an extra boost while running around. As far as ground pound, it is a big part of map movement (for me at least)
While I don’t “like” it per se, it’s one I could live with if it would stay in Halo, contrary to other advanced mobility crap like sprint. It’s one of the few abilities I don’t have any gripes with, as nothing else needs to be really accomodated for it (longitudinal scaling for sprint, vertical scaling for clamber, etc.)
If anything, I would make GP faster, so you have less time to correct your target if you misaligned your jump. Not only would this (hopefully) increase the skill requirement for correct use, but probably also speed up the game/decrease the downtime while you’re hovering in the air.
I think most people are indifferent about ground pound actually and even clamber. Way more people have a problem with Spartan Charge and Sprint I feel.
I do think 343I are definitely trying things in Halo 5 to see how they are received though. They should be keeping an open mind about anything and everything. If they’re not, they’re not doing there job very well.
In my opinion, if 343I really want to merge the gap so to speak between old and new fans a like, I’d make Halo 6 have a fast base moment speed like Doom, remove the sprint mechanic/animation completely, keep clamber, either tweak or remove spartan charge, keep or tweak ground pound, go back to the classic zoom style for zooming but update it, bring back duel wielding weapons in some sort of fashion, add interactive environments like H2A had for example and finally bring back Equipment as map pickups. I’m not sure what to say about thrusters but I think again, most fans are indifferent on them.
I honestly think this is a happy medium for a lot of people and if done correctly (along with a great campaign) would really put Halo back in the spot light again… For the right reasons too for a change
I’m fine with ground pound but Spartan charge and Sprint need to go. And maybe clamber also (now that is an unpopular opinion) but aside from that we can keep ground pound, thruster, and stabilize
Spartan charge could use some tweaking. I hate that you can 3 shot someone sprinting at you and they can spartan charge and you can’t hit them with a melee now your shield is drained and they can hit shoot you once because your basically frozen after getting hit.
