And yes, they’ve been deserving bans. I’m not here to try and dispute them.
The one thing that I will point out is that when I was banned and tried to access the forums for the first time, I was told I was banned, and until what date, and given a link to visit my Inbox as to why I was banned.
The problem is that use of your Inbox is also restricted while you are banned.
Rather annoying being told “click here to find out why” only for the system to tell you that you can’t do that. Not to mention you are given no options in appealing it.
It is so people don’t see the reason, be angered about it, and instantly make an alternate account, whine about it and get it further trouble.
It is more to prevent you from getting angry, by the time your ban will have expired, you will have cooled off and be in a more mature mood to read the PM.

Is this the actual reason?
It is a flawed system. In the rare event that I ever get banned, I’m sure I’d want to know why.

Well, most of the time, if you get banned for something, you’'d know what you did wrong.

If that is the case, I don’t think I’ll ever get banned. >:D

I don’t see the flaw. You still find out why you’ve been banned – you just end up having to wait until you’ve mostly calmed down.
Now, I don’t know if that’s the actual reason for denying inbox access during a suspension, but it’s certainly a benefit. Back when I was a bit of a troublemaker here, I was on the receiving end of that forced delay between knowing that I was banned and knowing why I was banned. I can say with certainty that if such a policy hadn’t been in place, I would’ve ended up forming grudges, retaliating and causing more trouble… I might never have cleaned up my act.
All that said, I think Methew’s right about one thing: if there’s an actual link from the suspension page to the inbox (I don’t recall whether there is), then it really should be removed. Because that’s just mean. :\

It tells you that you’ve got a new PM every time you login

I see. AFAIK that’s just a bit of JavaScript that’s conditionally written to the page. Hiding it from banned users should be a simple-ish modification.

hehe, too funny if that’s the case, this has had people up in arms for over a year now.
It annoyed me too, but like you said, clean up your act and it’s less annoying.
I used to hate that reason too. But the real kicker to me is getting banned until a certain date, then signing in on said date when your ban should expire only to see it increase for no specified reason.
Now THAT’S horse-yoink-. (Had to censor myself there, apparently that isn’t covered by the censors.)
It dosnt make much sense. Most of the time when you get banned, you have a good idea why. But a few times now i have been banned while having no real clue as to why, cant recall posting anything obviously out of line recently. In those cases, you are just left stewing about it for the entire duration of the ban until you get back and finally see what you may find to be a silly reason to be banned for a week, instead of having time to mull it over…I think its more likely to have people come back here full of fire and brimstone than calm and collected.
I just think it should at least allow you to read your ban PM so that you can spend the downtime reflecting upon it and how to avoid it in future instead of having no clue why you are on a timeout and then being told why just as you get your posting privs back, which is galling AND a waste of your actual ban period. Is the system about punishment, or reformation?
it would be nice to have access to PMs so that you can appeal the ban if you think you weren’t in the wrong, i know i got banned for 3 days, after i explained it to snickerdoodle and got an apology…
So how about loading the reason-why-your-banned PM on that page, rather than saying “Hey, sorry, you’re banned until tomorrow. Now click this link and see why! Oh wait, that link won’t work, haha joke’s on you”. Although I’m not really sure how the PM and ban system works here. I guess I’ll have to figure out what some of the rules are then break a few and then maybe understand how that system works.
But if y’all use a standard subject for the ban message, you could just have the page load the most recent one matching that. Wouldn’t be too hard, just copy+paste the stuff from “yaf_cp_message.aspx” and search the database for the right pm id for the why-you’re-banned message.
