An idea to retain players.
I have seen several threads on Halo Wars 2 dwindling population. I know a lot of people who quit playing almost immediately because of the balance issues with sentinels and jack rabbits. Once someone quits they don’t return still own the game just stop playing. 343 is going to struggle with balancing this game because of how hard Xbox makes releasing patches. Currently kinsano is a broken leader and I do believe she will be fixed. The issue is every single game now is teams picking 2 kinsanos and rushing with her. There are one or two viable strats to stop her rush with certain leaders or you can just rush back. However, this makes a RTS game with very limited strategy options and people bore of it quickly and leave. Patches wont get released with the frequency of a Starcraft since 343 has to go through Microsoft’s process to do an update.
So what I suggest is for 343 to add a team war playlist with every player required to play a random leader.
This will separate the try hard teams who have to pick the optimal strategy every time because they just cant lose a single game. This will also promote strategy growth since you will have to think on the fly. Yes I know forcing a random all option will force people to play Decimus and Isabel who are completely worthless, but you would also get to face them sometimes. For 343 it would still fit with the agenda of making DLC leaders slightly better making the purchase worth it since you will still get them from time to time.
My note to 343 you can’t patch the balance issues quick enough to make people happy, but you can create a place where strats will grow and give your game some depth.
For those who think 343 just needs to be faster on the patch I hope you realize Microsoft charges 343 every time they do an update.
I fail to see how this addresses imbalances. The people that play kinsano dupes wouldn’t play randoms.

Yes but I believe a large amount of the players base would be glad to play random. I know I pick only a couple leaders every time. The reason is I know the other team is only picking a few leaders so I need to counter.
Also I’m not saying this fixes balance. I’m saying balance won’t be fixed and this serves as a band aid. The game is now 60 days old with two betas and not even remotely close to balanced. What indication has 343 given you then can accomplish balance anytime soon.
Or they could just figure out how to have balanced leaders when they come out? Like it shouldn’t be hard to realize what could be abused.
What logic was was used when deciding to give Kinsano a turret nearly immediately into the game? Like couldn’t they stop to think… hey yeah this turret is a bad idea, it is going to be very difficult to hold a rush with a strong scout mass and a turret. Especially in 2v2. Oh and it’s pretty easy to pull off.
I don’t play Kinsano and I never will. I just don’t find it fun to cheese yourself to a win like they do. Unfortunately other players will do anything they can to get wins, and this type of attitude is what kills off games. If you look at the leaderboards there’s how many people on it? A few thousand? That’s a pretty pathetic player base. The other RTS I play, Age of empires 3 from like 10 years ago has that many still playing lol.
I just hope its not a pattern of having to buy the new leader to be able to play competively every month.
I am not good enough to play with any old leader…
The reason that there are multiple leaders is so that you can pick and choose which leaders you want to play with, so a random leader playlist doesn’t appeal to me.

However, if you played them several times you would get good enough with them.

It should be hard enough after years of RTS to figure out what will be abused. However, I think time has told us the developers cant figure it out in one shot.
Also you used a PC game in your example where the developer can push out updates without having to pay a third party for approval. This is not the case with Halo Wars 2, and I know they tried to make it a PC. I played the beta three times on my PC and said if I’m going to PC game I’m going to play StarCraft. Halo Wars 2 is a console game.

You don’t learn much when you get your clock cleaned…

But the opposing players should be learning also and you would only get leader screwed from time to time. Also if everyone can’t take a lose from time to time to experiment then the game won’t expand.

True, I suppose.
