I propose that we get the ranking system from Halo 3, but to also keep the credit system from Reach.
How to do this? Simple. Just implement the ranking system from Halo 3 but earn credits every game that go towards purchasing armor in the armory. This way rank means something again but you don’t have to do ridiculous achievements in order to make your spartan look the way you want it to.
Thoughts?
Agreed.
I posted the exact same thing a while back lol

Really? I never saw it. Well I guess you know what they say about great minds…
Oh, and you get a cookie for thanking me
(:
By Halo 3 system I suppose you mean the “1-50” system that is visible to everyone? And the purpose of doing this would be to “give you something to strive for?”
What happens when you reach 50? Start a new account?
Honestly, if TrueSkill is invisible and no one cheats the system so that it works as intended, your teammates and the other team should all be at or near the same level. If that were the case would your “rank” really matter?
The problem, as I see it, is not having the ability to determine the other player’s skill level because once you’re matched up the only thing you can do about it if you don’t like what you see is to quit. The problem is that the system fails to properly match players and teams in the first place.
Regardless of your skill level you want to be on a team that is at least as good as you are and you want to go up against a team that is at least as good as you are. I like to believe that no one wants to constantly beat up on lesser players, nor do they want to get creamed by a team that is way over their level.
If TrueSkill worked properly and you were, let’s say a “50”, and you knew that everyone on your team was say “45” or better, and the same for the other team, wouldn’t you expect to have a pretty good game? Would the other players’ rank matter?
I don’t think rank should be anything more than an indicator of your love of the game.
Huzzah for cookies for me!!

Hmm, all good points. So perhaps 343 needs to develop a new system. However, the main point of this topic was to see if using credits for armor, and having a separate ranking system was a good idea.
If credits are for armor, and TrueSkill works as intended, what would be the purpose of rank?
I’m just going to say what I did in this thread.
This is a touchy point for many. Many people want the ranking systems from Halo 2 or 3 to return. That’s fine, for a Matchmaking ranking system. How this relates to unlocking things like armor needs to be one that wont restrict other players. By ranking up in Matchmaking you should earn credits or achievements to go towards buying armor. Achievements should earn a sum of credits that varies depending on the level of difficulty. Instead of simply having Achievements to unlock armor like in Halo 3, Achievements should unlock an amount of credits equal to a certain piece of armor. This way you still get a certain armor reward for the Achievement but not one that makes it impossible to get that armor for players who may not have access to online play or may not enjoy campaign. The credits system should not have traditional ranks but rather something we will refer to as “Credit Milestones”. All credits will go towards moving through these milestones. If you rank up in Matchmaking, you should reach the next Credit Milestone. All game modes, whether it’s Campaign, Firefight, Forge or anything else, should contribute to your credits. Any restrictions to how many credits can be earned per game or day must be the same whether you are playing online or offline. This way we can have a system that is fair to everyone and will allow all players to unlock all armor permutations.
For a more detailed view of a similar idea I had a few months ago, see this thread.
I also posted a similar thread xD but that was on another account.
Skill level 1-50 in ranked games.
1 XP if you win the round, this promotes teamplay. Xp should also be what makes you rank up from brigadier to general etc.
Credits should also be in the game, but just for buying new armor parts.
But I think some armor parts should only be unlocked if you unlock certain achievements.
