An honest question about MM maps in Halo

So, I’ve played old Halos, and many other games on live, but I never had my own console, or live account. After finishing college and not having easy access to roommates’/friends’ consoles+accounts, I bought my own.

So here I am with Halo 4.

I enjoy the game, there are a few things that could be fixed or changed or whatever, but it doesn’t bother me too much. My main issue is with the maps… I’ve been playing this game most night since I got it, but now, I mean, it’s just not fun to me :. I know it has been voiced before, the lack of small maps, etc.

My question is : has it always been like this? How many maps did earlier iterations of Halos have when they went live? I’m asking because 5 maps for a 4v4 game does not seem like enough to me… I’m thoroughly bored. I will be getting the maps pack, but I mean, were we shorted or is this typical? I can’t stand the thought of playing one more game on Complex or Solace… It’s partly the maps themselves, but it’s also the sever lack of variety.

Am I alone in this? Is this normal? Has there ever been free maps added to games? Should we/Can we expect or hope for the same for Halo 4? Because my interest is floundering despite my enjoyment of the game itself.

I’m sincerely worried we won’t see any Forge-maps until after the Crimson Map Pack is finished… are these fears unfounded? God I hope so.

I go home and legitimately WANT to play Halo… but SpOps is useless to repeat unless yo uare level grinding, and playing ANY MM game leads to you playing 2-3 nights for 5-10 games over and over and over…

It has normally been that BTB is the area which has been missing maps.

Reach launched with 6 4v4 maps plus some forge variants (The Cage, Pinnacle, Asylum) meaning there were 9 maps in the 4v4 playlists.

Halo 3 had 10 maps including 2 BTB maps that were just about playable for 4v4.

For some reason, 343 is leaving the 4v4 playstyle behind. Only 5 maps at launch, and it doesn’t look like any of the Crimson map pack should be in a 4v4 playlist. No matter what they might say, Harvest is not a “small to mid-size map”.

See that’s what I thought/was worried about…

4v4 is my favorite playstyle - always has been and foreseeably may always be. But I CANNOT play every night on the same 5 mediocre maps.

(Cue: Then do something that’s not play Halo). I do, but I enjoy Halo when I get home from work - blow off some steam - have some fun. But now, it’s literally ONLY fun if 2-4 of my friends are on and we can play CTF or Oddball or something, because playing solo the same 5 maps over and over is mind numbingly frustrating.

It has usually been 70/30 or 60/40 in favor of smaller maps at launch. Halo CE only had 3 BTB maps until the PC version.

I wish it was still that way.

> I wish it was still that way.

I know the feeling. I love 2v2s, but those are all but impossible unless I want to play Haven and Abandon all day.

CTF, Regicide, KoTH, Team Regicide, Flood, SWAT, 4v4 Slayer, Slayer Pro…

These are all game types which suffer tremendously from having only 5 small maps* (IMO Complex shouldn’t even count)

*CTF and KoTH also use Valhalla/Ragnarok

I’m DYING HERE!

Well, the other Halo’s could be classified as arena shooters, halo 4 does not fall into that category.
Halo CE: had the following maps that would be classified as 4v4 maps: Battle Creek, Chill out, Damnation, Derelict,Hang Em High, Longest, Prisoner, Rat race, and Wizard. 9 maps

Halo 2: Ascension, Beaver Creek, Foundation, Ivory Tower, Lockout, Midship, Warlock, Sanctuary, Wizard, Backwash, elongation, Gemini, Desolation and Tombstone. 14 maps.

Halo 3: Assembly, blackout, Citadel, Cold Storage, Construct, Epitaph, Foundry, Guardian, Heretic,High Ground, Isolation,Narrows, Orbital, Sandbox, snowbound, and the pit. 16 maps

Halo reach: Boardwalk,Countdown, Powerhouse, Reflection, Swordbase,Asylum, Pinnacle, and Zealot. 9 maps.
halo 4: haven, Adrift, Abandon (I’m not counting complex because its too big.) and Solace. 4 maps

There’s pattern here moving away from the Arena type maps and now going towards a more big team type game. Granted some of the halo 2 and 3 maps were in DLC so the numbers are a little skewed.

We’ve already seen 3 of the dlc maps and they are not suitable for 4v4. So even if the next two map packs are exclusively 4v4, we would have 10 maps.

343 wants to compete with COD and Battlefield and by making the maps bigger and having the games more like the battles of those games (cod is 6v6, I’m guessing battlefield is the same if not more), they thought they would be able to.

This game needs to go back to its roots.

It’s truly upsetting… as I mentioned I never had live - I always played with friends. As a result Halo as I know and love it is a game played with 2-8 people total. I love small maps. I love hectic arena play. I love the maps I used to play - and the only map I like of these new ones are Haven, and Adrift.

Not that I HAVE to “like” all the maps - but 5? 5 maps? For all those gametypes? I play each of these 3-4 times each on a good night. Or 2 of them (Complex and Adrift) 5-15 times each on a bad one.

It is maddening.

What i realized while writing down all the maps for the previous Halos was, it was those maps that made the games fun.

I have a ton of issues with halo 4 that hinder my enjoyment, but after seeing how many other maps there were for previous iterations, the most glaring issue I have is the lack of maps that support 4v4.

Thanks 343 you took my favorite game and ruined it. :frowning:

All I want is to be able to play 4v4 and 5v5 games and not be bored in an hour.

That’s all I want!

Not going to happen in this game. Play customs those are kinda fun. The “competitive” settings that are released have some good stuff.
Search the gamertag DLESEL and you’ll find maps there that are fun 4v4. Problem is you need to find seven other people willing to play this crappy game.

Haha yeah… my real life friends aren’t a big xbox/gaming demographic. So… gotta find people in game (lol see the topic on mic usage).

Custom games won’t be a solution for me for a while I think.

I just want the three forge maps added to MM.

They are good I’m my opinion.
