An extremely comprehensive analysis of Infinite's controls

I just came across this 3-part material about why the game plays the way it does:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=_UoOQ7o5Yiw
https://youtube.com/watch?v=q0A3a-YsvSA
https://youtube.com/watch?v=TKCMgPftE0Y

I said WOW, especially the curve showed in part 2 explains why the controller feels like a huge, giant dead zone that prevents you from tiny, precise aiming, only to suddenly kick hard like a wild horse.

It’s a months old material and I am shocked this hasn’t been highlited before the way it deserves, instead the YT community thrives on clickbait vids about giving us supposedly “the best controller settings” where one week they tell us to turn the deadzone all the way down to the point the crosshair floats because supposedly this enables the mystical aim-assist all the time, then the next week they tell us to not to use the right stick at all because now they claim it actually disables aim-assist… So they clearly have no idea what they’re talking about.

But those three videos clearly show and explain that no matter how you set up the controls, including Elite controller’s additional options, the game just plays bad and prevents you from aiming.

And to make things worse the game puts you against PC/M+K players, who even have the audacity to complain how the console players have an “advantage” in having to deal with such terrible controls just… WOW

Hey welcome to Infinite’s amazing core gameplay.
This has been an issue since the beta and will probably never get fixed because the issues stem from faults in the design.

After the aim assist update MKB felt more like controller Halo than Infinite on controller because the garbage right stick aiming is replaced by intuitive mouse aiming plus you get the Halo aim assist.

Yet people will tell you Infinite is “just more difficult” and “you should just practice more” while its aiming system is inherently flawed from a design perspective. You have to learn to use terrible controls without assists and then to stop aiming once you do so the auto aim takes over, whereas in previous games you had to aim yourself.

It is entirely different from literally any other shooter on the market. People give all kinds of reasons why the game died after launch. I personally think that Infinite’s controls contributes as well. While hardcore fans in the waypoint forums are talking about “just getting good” because Halo is their favorite IP, I can see a ton of the “broader audience” people just thinking the game plays like crap, not wanting to put in time to practice this specific mechanic for an IP they don’t have any attachment to in the first place and leave.

Every single buddy I tried to get into the game quit it after a few days at best precisely because of the controls, because of how bad it plays, before even desync or anything came into play. I can only assume those kind of god-awful controls are also management’s fault

Really? After the opening clips in the first video you posted, you still say something like that?

Welcome to my world. I feel every little fault in the aiming and I hate it. I just pick it up immediately because of how much time I spend in MCC.

Why can’t I be like Mint Blitz or any of the pro players and simply ignore it?

Because you don’t rely on the game to make a living. People who play games for fun can’t simply ignore the horrendous aim feel of infinite.

Figures. I don’t suppose 343 could get on that, maybe hiring some aiming mechanic specialists. Oh wait, hiring freezes.

I totally forgot. :unamused:

ive always said the most important thing in a shooter is to shoot things. if people dont like how shooting feels then your game has failed.

Yeah and those people won’t care to make posts or give feedback about it in order to improve the game. Considering they’re probably not hardcore fans to begin with they just stop playing and play something better worth their time.

Servers are more important sorry. Servers before anything even the make up n lipstick

People doing servers and netcode are not the same people doing game mechanics.
Multiple things are important to get right, it’s irrelevant which one is “more important” than the other when you can have multiple groups of people work in parallel.

Agreed but they don’t seem to work that way. I’m all honesty I think the aim is much better then in h5. H5 was so insane how wonky and inconsistant it was. This still works that way but seems to randomly lose assist or something sometimes but hey. Sad state of affairs

But Xbox has tons of resources. Have you played Doom on controller? They could reach out to id software/Bethesda and ask for help.

Yeah. Xbox has tons of resources. They just don’t want to use em for 343.

I think that’s a 343 problem. Probably a pride/ego issue.

Who knows? I just know someone needs to fix it before I go insane.

Just move on man. I know it’s tough, I had a hard time but Halo 4 and 5 was the final nail for me. Back in those days I had a theater room with some Halo props. I had the Halo 2 cardboard display with the Chief holding dual SMG’s that a guy gave me from GameStop and a few other things. I was a huge Halo fan.

It might be better, or rather less bad than H5, but that doesn’t make it good.
The issue is that it stems mostly from design issues, while it also has bugs still.

Trying to start discourse around this subject might grab 343s attention so they can actually get to making the game feel good rather than just accepting it will stay bad forever.

Also while netcode/network issues are in the game. 343 definitely already knows this because it’s all people talk about, and are probably researching/working on fixes or optimization.

Desync drowns out discussion on other issues the game has, and since all people talk about is desync the developers might be less inclined to look for what people are talking about in the first place, because they know it’s just going to be more network-related complaining, which they already know is an issue.

Trying to mostly aim and fire while using the left stick (for controller users ) vs the look stick is tough. If you’re in tight spots your spartan cant really move you end up flailing around with the right stick. I’ve spent a bunch of time in training mode lately messing around since I changed controllers it’s just really hard vs other fps games I’ve played. Not saying it’s not doable as lots of people with very high accuracy’s are out there but going from other games it seems to be like you’re having to start over learning how to aim and shoot. I’ve started messing with the response curves in the sticks themselves to see if that helps but with having to actually take the time to play with the changed settings and test them out it’s a slow process. I don’t think I’ve played rank for over a month because I don’t feel confident in my aiming at all right now.

So I’m 75 hours away from being at a 1000 hours in infinte and I’m still having to learn how to aim from the inconsistency in how my br feels. Not to mention 343 nerfing the br. But the inconsistency of the servers makes it’s hard for you to feel confident in your abilities with your aim. Sometimes I can’t miss and other times I feel like I’ve never played the game before. So then I’ll just have to rely on position shooting and close up weapons. I do feel like this is a big reason why infinte has lost so many players. They need to stop changing the way the weapons feel because the pros want to complain. Because they’re upset that they lost a br gun fight to a commando. That’s sounds like a personal problem. Maybe you should get good. But 343 should be upping bullet magnetism not decreasing it at least until azure can fix their servers.
