Amazing game 343! However, aim assist is way too strong (friendly suggestion)

I am a former controller player of nearly 20 years all of which I have played Halo and been a huge fan of the series. It was never an option to use mouse and keyboard on Halo so it was never a question as to what I would use for my input. Now that we have the option, let me just say how grateful I am to have a choice and both controller and MnK players can exist together. Even though mouse and keyboard players have abandoned the game. The reason behind mouse and keyboard players leaving (myself included) has everything to do with the strength of aim assist and bullet magnetism on controller. It’s unjust and ungodly strength makes it so I can never make a mistake or miss shots using a mouse to aim. Realizing I can’t compete with aim assist, I started doing aim training every day for one hour just to attempt to keep up with a controller player who casually plays. When I realized that one hour wasn’t enough, I bumped it up to two hours of aim training 6 days a week and concluded it will never be enough. I got burned out quickly and gave up on the game and trying. It’s not human to not be able to make mistakes and yet aim assist covers a multitude of sins.

Aim assist is so strong you rarely use the right stick in engagements. I know because I have a controller and tested this (remember I was on controller for 20 years.) It’s remarkable and allows average players to appear to have some of the best aim. If you’re a controller player this should upset you because it takes a large part of the skill gap in Halo out, which has usually been aiming. I cannot express in words how much I don’t want to feel like I’m forced to go back to controller. This has gone beyond the argument that aim assist vs mouse and keyboard isn’t fair. It’s so much more than that.

I won’t complain without providing a solution. First, thank you for allowing MnK and controller players to exist together and for making a great game for both inputs. The game is awesome. Aim assist should be nerfed if you want to try and make things right for everyone and bring back the skill gap of actually aiming and using both sticks and not just one. Rigorous testing, pinning a controller player and mouse and keyboard player and analyzing the data and feedback from both sides would be favorable. In the end, reducing aim assist should be done.

Until then, like many MnK players, I’m done and only will be back every so often. This is heartbreaking as a Halo fan. Please don’t forget about us too. Thank you.

343 has said that they are looking into MnK problems but this statement of yours is an exaggeration. If I don’t use the Right Stick, I would be dead for a majority of the match.

I dont mind explaining the entire process of how aiming on a controller generally works. You’re turning this into a black and white issue. Of course right stick input is needed to win games but I’m specifically referring to how to abuse aim assist and get the most out of it. If you’re a controller player and are somewhat new to aiming with a controller, not everyone knows that you actully spend a majority of your time aiming with your left stick in engagements. The strength of aim assist plays a role on how much right stick input will be needed for micro adjustments. In Halo Infinite you will need to of course flick to your target but then the sticky aim assist locks on and bullet magnetism covers a multitude of sins. Bullet magnetism is icing on the cake.

The issue with how strong aim assist goes beyond justice and fairness for mouse and keyboard players. Taking out the skill to aim has always been a big part of the skill gap in Halo. It isn’t anymore.

I really need to test and Xbox One X, because I do not feel any sort of aim assist on my Xbox One.
My aiming feels as inconsistent now on a controller as it did when I started playing. Thought Single Player would improve my aim but that’s a whole world’s difference in aiming.
I spent a week exploring Zeta Halo, completing the campaign on Legendary, with one or two restarts due to bad checkpoints refusing to revert to a better one, and I was as bad going back into MP as when I left it.
Accuracy on controller has been, to my memory, about 30-35%, and now after a month long break, hoping onto PC, my accuracy is around 40-45%, and it’s a PC barely managing to run the game.

It sounds like you’re in need of some aim training. How long have you been on controller? New players will struggle to aim of course and can take some time to build up the skills to aim even with strong aim assist. If you have been using a controller for a few years but only play an hour on Saturday (just as an example), then you can see how it would be misleading to say you’ve been on controller for x amount of time when you play so infrequently.

I managed to pull up your stats. I see you’ve played less than 4 hours in total across all playlists in multiplayer. Anybody with that little amount of time with any skill would be in a state of beginner basics. You’re also Gold 1 which makes sense. This thread regarding aim assist and its strength has to do with diamond/onyx lobbies specifically. These players (myself included) know how to abuse aa.

I will say that if you need help improving you obviously need to dedicate a bit more time to MP. If you have a PC you can download on steam a game called Aim Labs which I believe has controller support. Play Aim Labs and do aim training for as little as 10 - 30 minutes a day with and without aim assist on and you see improvements. Shooting bots is a tried and true way but in my opinion, aim trainers provide more rigorous scenarios. FYI: Kovaaks is the premium aim trainer if controller is supported. Lastly, flick to the opponent with your right stick and aim with your left stick. Mimic their movement. Only touch the right stick to make micro adjustments. Hope this helps

I also do not think there is much aim assist, at least on the xbox one. It was worse in the beginning and the alpha.

Since 2001 regurarly.

Up until about 2015-16 did I play almost on a daily basis.
After that it’s been some longer breaks, but jumping back in hasn’t been a problem.

69 hours in total across all playlists, 477 matches, according to halotracker. I spent considerable amount of time in the Campaign on Legendary, the time for the game my account says is 7 days and 7 hours. Though I don’t think I spent that much time on the campaign, but maybe, was off work for a week to do it Legendary.

I’m more curious to see if it has to do with the platform, because I’ve had issues with aiming since day 1, not something I’ve seen or experienced on other games with controller.
If the Xbox One for some reason has reduced Aim assist, it’d make sense, and I’ve read some who has claimed they’ve experienced a drop in it when they’ve jumped between newer and older platforms.

Maybe I’ll look into it, I’m swamped with other projects at the moment.

And I don’t feel like micro-adjustments actually happen.
I had to print a thumbstick extension and use that to improve my controller aiming, for better fine control, it has helped but it still feel like I’m trying to shoot an ally in previous Halos.

Infinite has the least Aim Assist and Bullet Magnetism when compared to the past several games. It definitely has far less than 3 or Reach.

Aim assist isn’t as strong as you’re making it out to be. MnK simply sucks when playing Halo.

You have to remember that you’re playing a game that requires you to stay on target for longer periods of time compared to a game like CSGO. Not only that, but this Halo’s strafing speed is completely PSYCHOTIC.

Mice just isn’t meeting the bar. It’s receives the same bullet magnetism(e.g bullet bending) properties as controller would but it’s simply not enough. You can nerf aim assist, but will that change how terrible it feels to use a mouse? There’s are other games with mouse controls better than this.

my first question will be how manny new threads do we really need about aim assist?

and it seems that the OP is a PC platform player so the reason to hate aim assist make’s it more clear all he is a PC platform player.

i not know but are the controler players and xbox console players not telling that the aim assist is weaker in halo infinite then it was back in the older titels from halo.

this is way it was a big mistake to release halo infinite on the PC platform also since you get this crap off discusions that will never end since its always wrong and never good.

i’ve been saying the aim assist is really low since the flights.

low or not there is 1 thing i understand from all the threads about it is that there are never happy.
if there lower the aim assist more its still not good.
the only thing when there are happy about it is when its remove compleet from the game then there are happy about it.

i’m just saying that the aa isn’t very strong and compared to all past titles it feels like it’s not even there. it doesn’t really give a big advantage to controller players like everyone thinks.

At this point, it sounds like you are just mad that your Mouse and Keyboard isn’t outperforming Controller.

Maybe the real issue is the playing ground is too leveled now and MnK can’t keep up with Rollers?

Mouse and keyboard feels great but can’t compete with aim assist to any degree. The sticky aim assist or reticle friction tracks the opponent without input from the controller player. However, the average gamer has a 200-300ms reaction time on average and on mouse without aim assist, I have to react quick enough to the strafe. On mouse I have to physically react and move my mouse, controller players have aim assist that aims tracks for them in real time within milliseconds. The only other option is to 50/50 chance predict if the opponent will strafe in either direction. I’m not capable of responding in 1 milisecond like aim assist can and I can’t read minds as to where and when a player will strafe.

You have less than 30 hours played in multiplayer and you are not ranked. I completely understand if you feel aim assist isn’t strong enough and in time you will learn how to aim.

Ive been on controller/console for 20 years. I’ve only made the switch to PC and mouse and keyboard for 1 year. As someone who has been playing for so long, aim assist is stronger than it has ever been. I can’t believe this lie is going around and people keep believing it. It’s frustrating indeed.

I’m frustrated that as someone who spent 20 years on controller playing Halo, I no longer feel welcome just because I made the choice to switch inputs. Even if I was still on controller, aiming has always been a huge part of the skill gap but that has been decimated by a mountain of aim assist. The skill gap needs to return.

Aim assist on controller is not the problem. The problem has something to do with MnK being made weak by 343.

I play both Halo Infinite and Destiny 2 on controller. The aim assist in Destiny 2 feels 10 times stronger than in Halo Infinite. Yet, MnK is preffered by most in Destiny 2 PvP. I don’t have the numbers, but whenever there is a great player streaming PvP, a rough 3 out of 4 chance he/she plays on MnK.

Anyway, it sucks MnK players feel they are (or are) unable to compete with controller in Halo Infinite. I hope MnK gets a buff, I really do. But the “nerf aim assist”-posts are just not productive, because most controller players (like myself) feel Halo Infinite already has the lowest aim assist of any first person shooter they played.

Instead of controller getting a nerf, MnK should get some sort of buff. What buff, I don’t know. Aim assist on mouse? Maybe. I hope 343 has the answers.

aa is nonexistent in this title, i averaged 50-60% accuracy in H5’s pvp and 70-80% in h5’s firefight.
this halo though i struggle to hit 35% though im sure some of that is desync but still the aiming is bad on controller as well as mouse
