I’ve seen a lot of hate on Halo: The Flood over the years. I don’t understand why, I rather enjoyed it. Out of all the people that have told their opinions of the book, none of them liked it.
It was quite boring, but I liked it.
I really liked the flood, specially the parts with the ODSTs, the flood, the covenant. Well I liked the new perspectives and I really liked the data drops/terminals references.
The Master Chief parts were OK, but kind of boring, havining already played the game.
The parts focusing on other characters, however, were excellent.
It was alright. I enjoyed some parts, but other parts were pretty boring.
When I played CEA for the first time I was like, theres a guy that’s supposed to be hit by a needler and master chief petty officer john 117 has to give him a health pack and do his stuff.
After reading Nylund’s Fall of Reach, the Flood felt completely out of context within character experience/creation up to that point and for lack of better words, felt like I was reading a Children or Tween book. It was weird connecting so well with the PoA Crew in the last book only to have them be the comical cannon fodder of the game/book. It felt trivial and sophomoric. It was like I was reading an alternative universe that was ripped straight from the game (which is to be expected since it was a different author and had to follow the game to a certain extent). Not really the authors fault, perhaps it’s more Nylund’s fault for developing certain characters so well in the first book when they were just placeholders in the game.
I didn’t make it past the first few pages (chapter if that) and stopped reading it and haven’t touched it since.
i really enjoyed halo:the flood is really tied in with the game i thought
I enjoyed The Flood
I enjoyed every halo book cuz I love halo<3
It wasn’t very well written and the parts with the Chief were literally just someone describing everything they did in the game. My dad, who doesn’t play videogames, has read all the Halo novels and he agreed about the Master Chief stuff, even having never played the game he could tell that someone was just writing down what happened on screen. The parts with Yayap and Zuka were alright though.
Well, yeah, of course they were essentially copies of what happened in the game. That is what happened to Chief during the game and the book is based on the game. Writing scenes based on established events from a game always sucks. However, the portions with the Covenant and ODSTs were excellent.

You have to agree though that if the auther had started changing parts of the Chief story to make it more of an interesting read, then people would rage-fit.
I mean, what else is he suposed to write about when it comes to the chief?
The rest of the book with the ODSTs and the Covenant was pretty good.

I have to say, the one thing I really enjoyed about the book was definitely the changed perspective on the Flood and how dangerous it was compared to how it was portrayed in the game. Don’t get me wrong, the Flood in the game scared me… through the first play through. After that, I was just pretty bland about it. I liked in the book with the scenes such as Chief encountering that infection form how much, not even detailed (because it’s expected in books), so much as it just carried a much more darker sense to it. Given just that little bit of freedom with the writing really helped with some things.
Then again, I think it’s why I would like the other games to be converted into books. I love playing the games and the stories in them but they just seem so lacking at the same time.
So many more side-stories could be branched throughout the game-to-books such as how it was in the Flood. Not to mention I think it would help branch timelines together in a much more clear note. However, I would have to agree about there being a different author. The writing wasn’t as bad as some other things I’ve read but it definitely was not as good as it could have been with other authors.
I enjoyed Halo: The Flood, but less than most of the other books.
