I really sat down and thought about it after a game on Haven earlier where the enemy team all used DMRs and I was the only BR ToD in the game with not a great spread.
Normally I do quite well (within the parameters of me doing well vs. someone actually good doing well). I consistently have a huge amount of assists and an overall positive k/d after a handful of games with my buddies. But I primarily use a class consisting of:
BR
Magnum
Frags
Thruster Pack
Shielding
Dexterity
or for BTB
BR
Magnum
Plasmas
Jetpack
Mobility
Ammo Efficiency
I do have a class using the DMR but I only use it on very large maps because, frankly, I just don’t like using the weapon much.
I have fun using the BR and getting multi-kills with it. Its genuinely satisfying to out-BR someone and help in a teamshot.
But like 90% of players are using a DMR and a Bolt Shot loadout. Which gives them a natural starting advantage it seems. I can out-play the less-skilled ones usually, but an equally skilled and above me player with a DMR and a Bolt Shot is nearly impossible to counter with my preffered setup.
I don’t know, am I hurting myself by using weapons that everyone else seems to agree are inferior?
(substitute the same argument for Magnum vs. Bolt Shot because I just absolutely love the Magnum.)
After all, I got a killtacular earlier today with just my BR and Magnum so it must be at least viable, right?
The only reason I don’t use the DMR anymore is to be different. I use the LightRifle now. It has actually given me a better challenge. There isn’t as much aim assist and I have to use my radar to avoid close range fights unless there is a team mate to help me. That thing is close to useless at close range.

I think scoped in it’s like a two-shot beatdown if that helps.
BR
Magnum
Frags
Thruster Pack
Grenade Pickup / Requisition (BTB)
Ammo
And I agree it’s a pleasurable feeling to out-BR someone, or to beat a DMR user while wielding a BR. The DMR, afaik has a faster kill time (by like 0.3) seconds, which is enough to lose the battle when facing a skilled opponent.
My KD averages around 1.4 and I’m fine with that, I like the BR and plan on continuing its use even though I am to a disadvantage sometimes, I’ll just learn to adapt better.
To your title question… Not really… Just be mindful of the lines of sight because the DMR is deadly long range OP’d beast… (not including the Binary and Sniper Riffles)
honestly I LOVE the BR sooo much I don’t switch to the DMR. BUT. The DMR is the most overpowerd loadout weapon (besides the boltshot). honestly I use the BR for two reasons, I use it because it is by far wayyy more fun to use, and because I have a BIG fealing the DMR (and the boltshot) are going to be nerfed. Especially since bravo MLG is working at 343 now, I see the DMR and boltshot having some slight nerfs.
Only on large maps. I use the BR a lot more than the DMR because it feels more satisfying. For some reason I get bored when I use the DMR. Anyway I’ve used both and I’ve never noticed a difference between the two on small or medium maps. Large maps the DMR is massively overpowered compared the BR though.
Since i went rogue for my first spec i now use the carbine as my main for the camo. Its suprisings fun and powerful, last night on big team i kept moping up groups of people during the long range engagements.
The BR has its moments, heck even the light rifle can…the dmr is the best of them all but i think anyone is “hurting themselves” by not being flexible.
i love the br. the br is always my go to gun if you need a weapon thats good for long range use the lightrifle with stability mod -Yoink- is a beast. ive always been a close-mid range player no matter what game i play its just my style.
I’ve been using the BR for a while now because I’ve finished all commendations for my DMR. At first I really didn’t notice but on a head to head with a experienced player the DMR rules everything even short range if some1 knows what their doing with it. I want to use the DMR but want to get my commendations also. I’ve changed tactics and started using light rifle which is a Good gun BUT the DMR is the best. As for my K\D it did suffer from the change but as I said tactics need to change.Never miss the nades lol
All the weapons are made for specific situations. You are not hindering yourself for using the BR. I LOVE the BR and I’ve loved it since Halo 2. It’s a very good weapon in the hands of a person who can use it skillfully. The DMR isn’t all that overpowered, you know. Many times have I killed a DMR user with an Assault Rifle or BR at mid-range. Like the BR and AR, the DMR is a good weapon in the hands of a skilled player. It’s all related to preference or situation, really. I myself love all the loadout weapons. Which is why I have used Firepower twice to fit in some primary weapons to have every single loadout weapon on the field without repeating a weapon once. It took me some time to see which weapons worked best with each other, but I got it at the end, and now I’m very happy with my selections.
Long story short, if you prefer the BR, use it as much as you want. But if the situation calls for you to use a weapon you may not like, try to use it or another weapon that could give you an edge in combat.
When I first got the game i used the DMR, not for any other reason than i just liked the look and feel of the gun
Then the Carbine caught my eye, so i started to loadout with it - only then did I realise how powerful the DMR is
So… I loaded out withe the BR, ever since i changed from DMR loadout my KDR has fallen drastically but I just can’t bring myself to loadout with the DMR in it’s current state - it’s so powerful it just makes the game silly to me. it’s a weapon that’s just too easy to get kills with.
i would rather use a gun like the carbine - at least when i get a kill i know I deserve it.
I always play with my BR. Sometimes I’ll pick up a DMR after a kill if the situation I’m in demands it, but the vast majority of my time is spent using a BR.
i used the dmr for a while to see how it would be compared to reach and found how there is no bloom anymore. i used it for a few days to get cheap kills but ive since changed back to the br simply because i love that gun. its all i use now unless im on complex (i play mostly swat)
Nah, BR is a good weapon. I don’t use it or the DMR simply cuz everybody uses them. Been using the carbine and surprisingly it is really competitive at all ranges because of it’s low recoil and fast trigger pull.
The light rifle is stupid underpowered while not scoped in. Got all headshots on a guy watching his head flop back every shot and only managed to just get his shield down. And you will lose almost every long range engagement with it a against a DMR.
So I’d stick with it on everything cept maybe Ragnarock unless you flank well.
I think you are hurting yourself for using the BR for Big Team games because it’s not really meant for long range. If you don’t want to use the DMR, you should at least use the LightRifle since it’s meant for long range.
