Alternative to voting/vetoing...

I always thought it would be cool if there were a menu option, like the load-outs, where you can (before a game, in the main menu) choose which maps you prefer. Maybe a rating of 1 to 5 (stars or something simple), or even as simple as a up-vote/down-vote system on the entire map list.

Then, when you go into matchmaking, if you have certain maps that you do not prefer, it’ll attempt to match you up with as many people with similar votes/likes to you. From a programming standpoint (I’m a developer), it’s a really simple process. Maybe even add in an option in the matchmaking menu, where you can select “Search Preferences”; have one called “Map Preference” that focuses on trying to match you with players with similar map preferences first, as well as skill level (as per normal). That way, you can quickly turn that checkmark off if you want to play on ALL maps, or get tired of the ones you really like, whatever, instead of having to go back to the “Map Preferences” tab and change all your votes around.

Then, you could vote on a set of 3 or 4 maps that you actually like, instead of MAYBE having an option or two that you might like. It would both allow for more playtime for players that like only certain maps, AND still allow for the option to play on completely random-selected maps just by turning off 1 option.

Thoughts?

Yeah! The only downside would be going into a game with 7 others who preferred something like Sword Base, so such maps would always win…

Not really. If the system worked properly, it wouldn’t match you up with 7 people who preferred “Sword Base”, unless you yourself preferred it as well. If you didn’t, it would match you up with people who also “down-voted” that map, and/or any others.

Granted, it wouldn’t be perfect, as it would hardly ever match you up against people with the EXACT SAME votes on each map as you have, but it would be fairly close, especially if the population of Halo bumps up to even HALF of what it was with Halo 2 or Halo 3 (i.e. more people = more possible matches, better match percentage, etc.).

Off topic: I like “Sword Base” for SWAT. That’s about it. And even that gets old a half-hour in, because you play it 4 or 5 times in that timespan
