Alternative Theory: Halo isn't "dying" because of 343 - it is "dying" because gaming has moved on from Halo

Never seen such an ignorant comment

I see this topic is being necroposted again. A year later, it’s still definitely 100% 343s fault Halo is dying. Halo Infinite has been so bad, it makes me nostalgic for Halo 4, which had loads more content, maps, and modes, with tons of ways to unlock stuff for free by playing the game

The age of the Arena shooter is over, yes, all this means is that the market isn’t over saturated with them…

But that’s far from why Halo is dying. People like, heck, love arena shooters, but being an Arena shooter isn’t enough, just like being a Battle Royale game isn’t enough despite those being the powerhouses (the culling being a prime example, PUBG is pretty dead now and I garuntee you, there are more recent ones)… Halo could very easily have been a successful game, if it was a GOOD game

Halo infinite, as is can barely compete with some of the F2P titles out there, is anything but a live service, and simply isn’t competing well with other titles, much less OTHER HALO GAMES.

This halo game has a campaign and Arena…
No firefight
No Forge
No Co-op
No Social features.
But somehow we’ve got a working season pass and shop.

This is before we mention how buggy it started out so much so that you couldn’t even play BTB one week.

So not only do you have a game, that is lacking compared to other games in terms of content and service, you have a Halo game that’s less Halo than any Halo before it. Not only do new players not want to stick around, because there are a million better games out there, some of which are just better arena shooters (splitgate has received a lot of praise in that regard), even Halo players are just going to back to MCC or other games.

TL;DR
There is a long, LONG list of reasons that contribute to this games failure, I can garuntee that it being an Arena shooter is near the bottom of that list.

20 million players day 1 wold say different. 343 has yet to make a good Halo game. its either missing key halo features at launch and/or chasing a popular gaming trend but not implementing nearly as good as what they are trying to copy. Halo is dying because of 343.

Look at the Forge leaks and reveals for this game. DAY 1 with that package would HAVE POPPED OFF. Standard Halo features included an easy win for the next decade+ but no. Instead no split screen, backwards customization, no custom games browser or Team Slayer on LAUNCH DAY! Something HAS to change.

Lol nah. 343 ruined it with lack of content at release and almost a year later. Not to mention delays and cancellations.

“People have moved on from Arena Shooters to Arcade Shooters”

That’s a very narrow view, especially considering that the differences between them are mostly cosmetic. More, Halo has a big fan base.

Here’s the question to ask: “What are players thinking about while playing?”

Every Halo game has players spend most of their brain power thinking tactical about their position, attack angle, next move, etc. Taking a moment to regroup, and work together and/or plan, is critical to success in many cases.

The trouble is simply that Halo Infinite isnt a Halo game. Instead it falls into the ugly category I call “tweaker fps” where winning boils down to snap turns, jumping everywhere, low ping, and high rez mouse. These games only reward reaction, and often punish taking a moment to plan or coordinate the next move.

I think Halo hasn’t done exceptional for a while because it stopped creating new experiences, which is what Halo has always done.

HCE created the first functional console FPS (from a modern context).

H2 created easy to play online matchmaking (with collaboration from the XBL team if course).

H3 created forge, an easy to use map editor on console.

And after that titles start not doing that great, because they’re just repackaging those previously new experiences. I would argue H5 Warzone was the first new experience in a Halo title since H3.

Which means we’ve gone a long time with Halo following the industry instead of expanding what’s possible in the industry

Well, not only are they just repackaging those features, they’re often delayed/cancelled so 343 can make a knock off of some other game’s features.

Halo Reach is still the most content rich halo game, and every 343 game has lived in its shadow.

Your theory would have some grounds if Halo’s successful recipe had remained intact and was enhanced with additional features BUT that is not the case here. This Halo by 343i isn’t Halo exactly. Plenty of fun features have been removed and it has a different rating that doesn’t even allow for blood.

So if we still had a Halo 1 or Halo 2 or Halo 3 (take your pick), with better graphics, inherited music style, custom game browser, intact global chat, more maps, weapons, game modes, additional features, a forge and a complete campaign, then it would really be worth it to discuss about end times for Halo or if people have been bored of it.

People have proved to be loyal to videogames for decades and are not easily bored of fun when there’s a successful recipe. They may grow a more demanding taste for graphics, but that goes for all videogames.

I think that this perspective does not consider the fact that Halo 1-3 was a Golden Goose formula that worked. With Halo 4, the entire gameplay base changed to be something else, though you can argue that Halo Reach was the start of that design shift.

Halo has been a different game every single time 343 has tried their hand with it, rather than the consistency of Halo 1-3. Halo 4 was Call of Duty-lite. Halo 5 tried to mix in Titanfall elements. Halo Infinite uses the Apex/Call of Duty movement as a base. The gameplay experience between each of these games is wildly different to the point that you could repaint them and they would be wholly unrelated to one another.

Halo moved away from itself. Rather than collecting the Golden Eggs from the Goose, they butchered the goose and tried to sell its giblets as replacements.

Nah 700k showed up for launch. When you chase trends however you can’t expect to set records three games in a row.
