The game went from 250,000 concurrent users to something like 15,000 over the last several months.

That shows players are interested in Halo and Arena games, but the flaws pushed them away

… … … … … you do know that Halo IS an arena shooter right? Like that is how it started it’s multiplayer as?

I’m just saying that people who come for Halo mostly come to Halo because of its name and not what the actual game is. (It being an arena game)

If that were the case, then Halo 4 wouldn’t have failed so hard.

This MIGHT be believable.

If it weren’t for the fact that the game had a GIGIANTIC player base on the multiplayer release.

People WANT more Halo,
People WANT more tight and complete Arena Shooters.
People clearly loved the modern Doom games, people Loved Prey and its legacy in the Bioshock games.
These games are critically praised for what they are.
People want good, well paced Arena shooters

What people DON’T want.
Is a Bad Halo release.
People have been abandoning the game because multiplayer is basically incomplete.
It is missing more then 90% of the features that 3 and Reach had.

It doesn’t even have a generic PvE mode in the form of Fire fight.
It doesn’t even have Campaign Co-op, and thats the $60 release part of the package.

The hype for this game pre-release would say otherwise. The success of Doom, Wolfenstein and Splitgate would say otherwise. Really, the state of Halo Infinite is par for the course for 343i. They try to reinvent every wheel and pat themselves on the back for doing basic things that the industry has been doing successfully for a decade.

I mean this when I say it: 343i needs to be reorganized from the ground up. Literally every single project that they touch is grounded in controversy. Every. Single. One. They are clearly doing something wrong and it blows my mind that they are allowed to just continue doing that over and over and over.

Disagree. The studio that is assigned to the Halo IP just straight up sucks at pretty much everything.

I think you are spot on. Arena shooters will still have their place in the video game world, but the mass attention is no longer there. BRs are currently king.

That hurts to say because I love Halo and despise BRs but it is what it is. As you pointed out, Halo Infinite could have had a flawless release and it would not have mattered. Their player retention to this point would have been better, but it was never going to put up CoD Warzone, PUBG, or Fortnite numbers.

With all of that said, Infinite is still in a rough spot and has a lot of work ahead of them to retain the player base that is still there.

To be fair, these are business that create these games, and if there is more money to be made else where, I can’t blame them for trying. It sucks, but I understand it.

games like halo with small maps and respawns are really hard to balance and make interesting but any game that does it properly will strike gold.

i remember knowing nothing about halo multiplayer. i saw a video on tv of devs tallking about the game on high ground. i remember the map looking really interesting as one team would literally fight for high ground. the gameplay had like a story to it. what really sold me, was the bubbleshhield, the way players could just pull that out of their pockets in pivotal moments and it affected how everyone treated the map temporarily.

When I finally played the game, i stayed because of the balanced gunplay and movement. halo 3 wasnt perfect, it did get stale, matches started to get repetitive but was relieved with custom games. halo 3 had a good foundation but then we got the sequels and then i realised the games industry have a serious problem with innovating but atleast they try. I wouldnt want another halo 3 clone.

While I do think this is part of it - people are used to their Warzone and Apex Legends experience, and Halo doesn’t deliver that, and they don’t want to learn Halo - I also don’t think anything is ever entirely cut and dry to the point of having one distinct cause. I think it’s more likely that multiple things are true. The things I think are true, and are contributing, are below:

  1. Gamers have changed:
    1a. Gamers expect constant content drops these days - Halo Infinite’s MP content is similar to Halo 3’s, but it is now not enough in terms of what players expect, be that right or wrong
    1b. Gamers no longer are satisfied with playing for the sheer enjoyment of playing, many expect and enjoy progression systems, which Infinite struggles with
    1c. Gaming culture now is practically outrage culture, you can’t do anything without backlash anymore, and Infinite is not immune to this, with some criticism being deserved, and some not being deserved
    1d. The attention span of gamers is now shorter - there is more to play, and in combo with the gaming outrage culture, gamers are quick to dump on something and then move on
    1e. Gamers expect to be able to grind a game like it’s their job and have the experience remain “fresh”, closely tied with point 1a
  2. Infinite does have issues:
    2a. BTB is the most socially driven mode, where it is safe to assume most people would spend their time, and it was broken for the majority of the game’s release time
    2b. Server issues, desync, and the geofiltering mess have certainly impacted view of the game, and the desire to play the game for many
  3. The launch window was less than ideal timing:
    3a. Launching the game, fully, just 2ish weeks before a long holiday break was not the best decision from a support standpoint - unless you are prepared to have people working overtime over the holidays, live service platforms are expected - rightly or wrongly - to receive support regardless of holiday - point 1c ties into this
    3b. Launching when it did meant that ~1 month of dev attention was lost on launch issues, and launch is always the roughest time for any game
  4. Unkept promises:
    4a. The roadmap promise and subsequent delay has left many feeling that their “needed” content drops are in question, and thus their interest wanes as they are uncertain how long they can grind the same things before burning out

So all told, I think you are partially right, that Infinite is stuck in a state where it’s an old-school game trying to fit into a modern era of gaming, and appeal to modern gamers, but is struggling to reconcile its old-school nature with the demands and expectations of the modern environment. However, as pointed out above, I think that is only partially the answer. The totality is more complex - some is on gamers, some is on 343, some is just poor timing, and some is being an arena shooter in a BR/live service world.

Everyone disagreeing with you is delusional. It was going to die because the genre is dead. It was taken over by hero shooters and battle royales. Arena shooters like this do not, will not and will never again hold the attention of modern gamers. It could’ve been the perfect Halo game, the numbers still would have died down in a similar fashion. Anyone thinking otherwise is just completely drunk on nostalgia.

So what makes people play the MCC instead of infinite then??? This genre isn’t dying, corporations are trying to monetize harder than they care about producing a game that the fans want. For sure people would play this if you had lobbies, more maps, and a customization system/progression system that just wasn’t absolute trash.
That’s why it’s ‘dying’. Leaking slowly, and sometimes quickly. Hole in the barrel gets bigger everyday without a content drop, fix, etc.
BTB didn’t work for the first 2 1/2 months, they released a Reach armor set (HAZOP) for $20, but you needed the $10 battle pass to even equip it to the armor core in the first week of the BATTLEPASS THEMED AFTER REACH-
They do not care.
Crazy that people can’t see that it’s not the genre. 343 is holding halo like its a 20 pound bowling ball covered in butter, that you told them not to drop, but if they do drop it they get $20, and they just keep dropping it on purpose.

At least on Steam, MCC has 1/5 the 24-hour peak of Infinite. Though, that is with a bump from the Tenrai event. Without that bump, MCC has approximately 1/3 the 24-hour peak of Infinite. So, while there may be some users playing MCC instead of Infinite, there isn’t anything that would indicate that it’s thriving better than Infinite (if Steam numbers are actually able to be extrapolated to the wider gaming audience).

I play MCC to get a nostalgia trip. I don’t play because it’s an arena game. I’m sure most people play like this. A new game should’ve been new and exciting. Not the same thing we already played years ago. There’s nothing new about infinite
