Alternate Haloverse - Onyx Remains Closed Off

Based on a topic I’ve done in the past, Alternate Haloverse is meant to stretch the speculative muscles of Halo lore fans to their limits. For now this may be just a standalone deal, but if people like it then I might expand it to a weekly feature if that is alright with the community. The purpose of this topic is to take a key moment of the Halo story, change it and discuss what the ripple effects may be based on how the situation unfolded. The topic for this Alternate Haloverse is what would happen if Onyx remained closed off from UNSC hands after the shield world went into slipspace in 2552 and UNSC efforts to open it up resulted in vain.

Discuss!

We’re either dead or one of Vadam’s vassal states.

Kurt lives and we have a much larger force of Spartan IIIs. However, the UNSC Infinity isn’t finish by Huragok and Humanity doesn’t get pin-point accurate slip-space drives.

Kurt would still be dead unfortunately, remember he bought time for the rest of his group to get to the portal and prevent the Covenant from getting inside as well.

Blue Team, Mendez and Halsey would still remain in the Dyson Sphere. Halsey would not have been able to help supply the UNSC with the Forerunner technology on the Infinity; and Infinity would not have found FUD and John.

What sort of deeper implications do you think such an event would have? I’m curious to know what might happen if John made it to Requiem, yet no Infinity would be around to help him.

He would die. Didact bends him over and… well… you get the point.

Unfortunately Kilo V would still go ahead with its arming of Telcam, and Halsey would still be an ONI scapegoat. Although they wouldn’t be able to perform half of the later feats without the Tart-Cart slipspace capable pelican (or they could just get a condor from some poor backwater colony like Sedra in nightfall :p) However we wouldn’t have to listen to Vasily go on and on about wanting to shoot Halsey and regretting not shooting her. Also Jul (assuming he still gets captured) would either have to disappear into some other dark ONI hole (hopefully with better security) and thus not escape to Hesduros to incite the ‘Covenant Remnant’ fleet to form up and go to requiem. The other option being Jul isn’t captured, and his wife doesn’t die thus he never takes up the role of ‘Didact’s Hand’ on his quest for justice. The lack of infinity however could mean that Thel Vadam is killed during the assault on his keep, leaving Sanghelios without its strong ‘pro human’ outlook.

In turn this could lead to the deaths of Uze Taham and N’tho who would thus not be around for the events of ‘Hunters in the Dark’, and without their vital aid, we all know how futile and pointless all the other events of the games/comics/books would have been…

-Halsey never returns to the UNSC (No Infinity (At least in the state it is in now))
-Jul 'Mdama is never imprisoned on Onyx and thus never escapes. The Battles of Draetheus V, Requiem I and II, Spartan Ops and the events of the Janus Key story arc never happen
-Infinity is not completed by 2557; it was never there to move the Composer to Ivanoff station, Ivanoff was never built, Installation 07 wasn’t discovered, Requiem wasn’t discovered
-Requiem was never plunged into the sun
-John was forced to enter Requiem alone, and his awakening of the didact (And lack of allying UNSC forces, thanks to no Infinity) leads to the destruction of Earth, as the Home Fleet simply doesn’t pack the firepower to take on Mantle’s Approach
-No Covenant fleet means John can’t get a ride to I03 and grab a HAVOK from Ivanoff (Which now doesn’t exist)
-The UNSC has nowhere near the amount of Forerunner gear it otherwise would have

So, in my interpretation, the Didact basically never gets defeated because John was both unable to use the Covenant (Thanks to Jul not ever escaping) or a friendly ship (Infinity was not finished/ built) to get back to Earth or I03. Because there was no warning, the Didact wiped out Earth and quickly waged war on the rest of humankind, with Requiem as his base.

Actually all would not be lost if N’tho was killed or was not in a potion to help the UNSC return to the ark and shut off the Halo Array from firing… because even if it did, Dr Halsey, Mendez, Fred, Kelly, Linda, Tom, Lucy, Ash, Mark, Olivia and team Katana along with the engineers would still be sealed inside Onyx and thus safe from the Halo radiation/pulse (just as Halsey hoped when she lead them there) Thus the galaxy would be devoid of life except for those humans on onyx, (maybe the Sangheili from broken circle, although I don’t know if the segments/ring protect from the Halo effect as the full shield world does) and the Didact in his cryptum on requiem. (Maybe also the Chief on FUD, assuming he hasn’t drifted back into range by 2555…)

Would the Halos have killed the whole galaxy, though? I04 is still gone, so most of its 25,000 light year coverage radius would remain safe (though there can be assumed to be some overlap between the pulses the others most likely couldn’t cover the entirety of 04’s former area of effect). Also, since the PoA was able to make it from Reach to 04 in two weeks, it must be close enough for Earth and thus most of the human colonial space to be in its area of effect, meaning they may not have been affected at all. Covenant space is another story, though.

The galaxy falls into chaos; the only hope and salvation for it all is one Unggoy. Alone Fleabee struggles to gain a foothold with the chaos, but his trusty companion Flubnub encourages Fleabee to pursue his goal of galactic domination. Fleabee then infiltrates Sanghelios with his buddies. Things go south fast Fleabee no longer wants to rule the galaxy; he begins to regret his decision to come to Sanghelios. Finally, HE REGRETS EVERYTHING!

Very good point Skeleborn. Suffered a complete brain fart and forgot about the gaping hole in the array coverage… has anyone looked into the area that would be ‘spared’ my installation 04 being absent? I remember some old ‘galaxy map’ that has been debunked, but haven’t seen anything indicating rough proximity of planets/installations to hazard a guess as to who might make it…

Just had a horrible thought… with ONI being the new ‘space nazis’… I hope that it isn’t a case of the Inner colonies being in that sweet spot, or I’m pretty sure ONI will see it as a win-win. Purge the Covenant races, Flood and Outer colonies with the push of a button…

I still think John might have been able to defeat the Didact, but it would have been much tougher to do so.

I don’t think the outer colonies are spread out far enough to make a difference where distances like the Halos’ ranges are concerned. The human colonial sphere is only something like a few hundred light years wide after all, and a single Halo’s range is 25,000 light years. Even many Covenant worlds might’ve been within that radius, but that depends on how far they truly are.

Oh, I thought you meant that no one got inside the shield world. Ok, then Halo 5 would be much different considering Blue Team and Halsey would still be locked away.
