Fireteam Osiris, weather you like them or not, were not necessary. At all. The characters of all of them (except for Buck) were just boring and uninspired. Plus these were brand new characters we had never heard about except from the recent books that came out just before halo 5. Also establishing their back stories in game was just pointless because we did not care or know who they were. I think Alpha Nine should have replaced fireteam Osiris for halo 5’s campaign. It could consist of Veronica, Buck, Romeo, and Dutch. With Veronica (an ONI agent) being the only one who knows who Alpha Nine is hunting, keeping the rest of the team in the dark about chief.
It would make for a far more interesting story as these are characters we already know and care about and to an extent rival blue team in their aspects and personalities. When Alpha nine finally discovered who they are hunting it would make for a very interesting story arc, with Buck and Veronica’s relationship at stake, Alpha nine not only morally conflicted about capturing chief but also scared of him. I mean Alpha nine would stand no chance in a fight against blue team but the hunt would be epic (these guys hunted the covenant and rescued the engineer through covenant occupied new mambasa). How cool would it be for Romeo trying to take a sniper shot at the chief only to have his scope shot off by Linda. Or to see buck and Fred get into a fist fight.
Just a thought but Alpha nine would have been far more interesting than Osiris, and Locke could have been easily replaced by Veronica.
Thing is with naming structures in the military, osiris could be called alpha nine, it wouldn’t matter. Also Dutch retired for good and Dare’s an ONI asset. As much as i find the idea interesting.

This^^ and I think 343 wanted the 2 male, 2 female teams to equal out…

That is why this is a thread about what could have been. Dutch didn’t need to retire (they could have changed the story) and Locke was an ONI asset, Veronica could have been ordered by ONI to capture chief.

Sadly feminism took over story in that department. Having veronica as the leader would have been fine though, she was already the leader of Alpha nine anyway.
Definitely interesting to think about, and they could have worked. However, I disagree about the bit with them talking about Osiris’s back stories. I think it was needed since the players who haven’t read the books had no idea who the majority of them were. It at least gave those players some idea about who they were fighting alongside, and why they should care. I didn’t like them at first, but Osiris is growing on me a little.
i actually disliked all of alpha nine except buck, so i prefered osiris. i’m still indifferent on most of osiris’ members but i see potential.
Meh, your missing the part where there was no actual conflict between chief and Osiris.
Honestly I don’t see why they needed to add another playable team at this point in the story, at least in the way they had done it. I personally would have driven halo 5 into being a game focused a lot more on the Chief, him getting over Cortana and re-bonding with blue team, perhaps questioning his own humanity and mortality. Maybe having him juxtaposed with a newer team like Osiris, who could easily be seen as replacements could set him off but now I’m rambling.
Slightly back to the topic, I imagine the reason they wanted a new team is so that they didn’t have all the baggage and they could make a fresh start.
