After seeing the many different threads regarding the possible changes of the standard Halo 4 button layouts, I’ve decided to make this thread to address an issue that console gamers have had for many years; unchangeable button placement.
We’ve had standard controller settings for each game, and each players has had to use those settings that they were most comfortable with. However, there are some gamers out there who don’t have two working hands to play with, or are disabled in a way that they have to struggle much more than we do when we play video games. Take Chuck or “AskaCapper” for an example. He has to play with his face because he cannot change how the buttons are mapped on the controller.
I find it ridiculous in 2012, with all the amazing changes to gaming since 1990; sick looking graphics, amazing environments, AI that interacts with your actions, that today video games do not have the ability to allow personal button settings. As lucky as I am to have two working hands, some people do not have that ability, and having customizable button mapping will allow people who have disabilities to play video games just the same as we do. Also, it will allow people who do not like the preset button layouts to customize their own so they will be happy when playing a game.
Another argument is that all PC games have the ability to change their controls freely at will. Halo PC and Halo 2 Vista both allowed you to have customizable keyboard settings. I know it’s on the computer, but if it’s possible to be programmed for video games from 2003/2006, why can’t it be done in 2012 on a console? Please 343, can you make this happen?
Please add a comment if you agree with this idea, for I find this very important, and if we have 5 months before the game is released, this should be able to get done (I hope).
Hope everyone has a great summer, and I appreciate you reading this thread.
as long as I can make “The Actual Way Bumper Jumper Is Supossed To Be” control scheme, then yes. xOver9000
if Armored Core (an old PlayStation game, now a 360 game also) has had Custom Mapping since 1999 (or sooner), then why can’t 2012 Very Popular Halo 4? this is beyond fathomable to me.
The reason many console games don’t do custom button mapping is because of the possibility of OP button combos, which I think is silly. It should be allowed. I see games like flight sims doing it, and PC keyboards really are no different when it comes to this.
i would imagine that no one here likes the wii, but Conduit and Conduit 2 for wii had custom button mapping. and it worked out really well. i think it should be an option for any game. granted i will wind up using default anyways, but still.

I could see this being an issue for Halo 2 because of the BXR Combo plus others, but with that gone now I see no reason to now allow players to change the controls to what they personally want.

Actually, almost every PC game since early 90s has fully customizable controls with exception of strict console ports. As for consoles, I’ve seen button mapping only in few PS3 games.

LOLWUT? Do developers think that way? It sounds as silly as OP keyboard layouts on PC.
Btw, on PC I usually change 80-100% of default keyboard layout, even WASD. (I play with ESDF)

Did you see the new Bumper Jumper’s layout? Let me enlight you on this trash:
RT: SHOOT
LT: ARMOR ABILITY
RB: MELEE
LB: JUMP
Y: SWITCH WEAPON
B: ACTION/RELOAD
A: SPRINT
X: GRENADES
LS: DUCK
LB: ZOOM
It’s so bad I can’t even imagine how 343i managed to make it so… bad.
Just letting you know, you aren’t allowed to bump threads unless you actually have something to add.
OT: I think it would be nice, but I don’t know if it’ll happen. I think they said that there would be so many options that you could almost customize it, but not quite.
i am not disabled, and i can learn to use the controller set up what ever it is, but they don’t always feel right, try jet packing and aiming when X is the AA button… or jumping and aiming when A is the jump button, or aiming and melee when B is the melee button, now try using different AA’s, jumping and melee while aiming on different controller set ups… its easier with some AAs on some layouts but harder with them on others.
if you could remap your controls, you could put jumping, melee, shoot, AA in places that are best FOR YOU, without having to sacrifice the ability to use certain AA’s effectively, or multiple actions at the same time.
take bumper jumper in reach, great for jumping aiming and melee simultaneously, but try using an AA while you do it and its gone you had to press B, probably with your aiming thumb. which also means you cant jet pack worth a damn because you have to hold B to fly so you cant aim…
i agree with controller remapping, it will help disabled people enjoy the game, make the game more enjoyable for everyone as they can put buttons where they work best for themselves.
I’d like customizable button mapping. Without it, I doubt I could ever use what I feel would be the perfect controller setting (A Bumper Jumper/Green Thumb combo)
