All or Nothing: Halo's Fate Depends on Halo 4.

This realization hit me a few weeks ago when I was sitting on the forums, thinking about Halo in general. Halo’s in a pretty dark place right now. Halo isn’t nearly as popular as it used to be, what with CoD dominating the market and whatnot. Not only is Halo not exactly a “must buy” anymore with most FPS gamers, but what little community is left is totally split on many issues regarding the future of the franchise.

As much as I would love to work on a Halo game…I really don’t envy 343 right now. The very future of the franchise, and subsequently how Halo will be remembered in this history books, ENTIRELY depends on Halo 4.

First of all, if the game fails to compete and sell well in the FPS market, then the franchise is dead. If you don’t think Microsoft will pull the plug…Think twice. If Halo 4 doesn’t sell, then it doesn’t get a sequel, and the Halo name is dead. This goes hand in hand with Halo performing critically as well. If the game averages 6-7s instead of 8-9s, Microsoft might pull the plug on that aspect alone.

Secondly, the game has to appeal to the fanbase it’s already got. Show of hands, how many people would buy Halo 4 if it was exactly like Reach? Alternatively, how many people would buy Halo 4 if it was exactly like Halo 3? I’m betting there wouldn’t be a lot of people in either one of those ballparks, so 343 is tasked with the challenge of giving us a game that isn’t anything like what we’ve come to know from Halo…But at the same time does not alienate us and keeps that “Halo” feel.

That alone seems like a monumental and almost impossible task.

The third challenge 343 faces is staying competitive. Even if the game sells well, is critically acclaimed, and the fans love it…They still have to compete with Call of Duty and Gears of War to stay alive on the XBL charts. I think we can all agree that while we can still get games in Reach, we’d all like to have more people playing the game so that the TruSkill systems could work at their best. I bet we’d also like to have a population that could support the Ranking structure of Halo 4. Most importantly, people have to WANT to try Halo 4. Once they’ve tried it, they have to want to keep playing.

Just thinking about that has me really worried for Halo as a franchise. Any one of those goes wrong, and you potentially have no Halo 5, 6…Really any more Halo games at all. 343 has a bigger burden on their shoulders than most of us probably think about on a daily basis.

So next time you think about whining that “They aren’t giving us information!” or “343 is RUINING Halo!”, just remember the task they’re undertaking, and what kind of pressure they all must be under. We might be in it for the sake of the game…But 343 is in it for their JOBS.

Ease up on them a little, hmm?

> Ease up on them a little, hmm?

Nope.

I also love how you managed to fit this as an attack to the people who just want to know what Halo 4 is about and just want some information to give them hope.

As long as the games pull sales of few million copies, I’m rather sure that 343i won’t just cut the franchise. After all, there are lots of developers who can just imagine their game selling over million copies. But I agree that they have a pretty gigantic boots to fill. but we’ll just ahve to wait and see how that works out.

I think Halo’s fate was written in Halo 3

But Halo 4 is a brand new trilogy, this doesn’t hang by a thread I can see Halo 4 making more money then any other game, Unless of course another Russian does something bad so the CoD brigade can jump on the band wagon =/

343 will have no problems, Halo 4-6 are going to be ground breaking to say the least.

Truthfully, Halo doesn’t need to be popular. As long as there is a demand for Halo, Halo will exist. Now, if CoD wasn’t popular, it would have died off long ago, just because Activision wouldn’t be making as much money, and therefore, no longer a profitable series and it would be shut down.

Halo won’t die until my Xbox breaks and my Halo 2 CD cracks.

> Ease up on them a little, hmm?

Why certainly. Regardless or not if it sells well or not, if it fulfills at least 4/7 categories that I have pointed out recently, I’m good.

Believe.

Your argument is moot. Halo’s fate has depended on each and every Halo game in turn. If Halo, Halo 2, or Halo 3 had crashed and burned at retail, the series would have ended with one of them. The same goes for Halo 4, Halo 5, and Halo 6.

HEROES NEVER DIE.

You got proof of this?

Thought not.

Oh god, we got a Boss Nasti over here.

All the proof you need is that the future of Halo relies on this new Trilogy being groundbreaking.
They wouldn’t commit to a trilogy unless they have a plan to completely refresh the game.
Plus we are on the edge of a new generation of consoles.
Halo’s gameplay is based around LAST GENERATION of technology.
It will evolve.

I’m not really looking to partake in this debate, but I couldn’t resist pointing out that those things don’t actually constitute proof. Sorry to be such a -Yoink-.

WITH BR’s

That’s how I feel about Halo 4. Right there. Just remove a lot of the words and replace with halo terms like " forerunners" and “spartans” etc.

Looks like the word patience isn’t in your book. Don’t pull the stupid “I’ve waited 5 years argument”. It doesn’t matter how long you waited - those 5 years are gone. What does matter is that your wait has a definitive end later this year. Marketing isn’t stupid enough to not say anything about the game until it launches and we’re probably going to get something in a few weeks.

And regardless your rebuttal, I have the patience to wait for this game.

You are so damn negative Im sick of you on these forums. Get some anti-depressants and come back here when your all good, ok?

While I understand where you are coming from, Halo’s fate will always be based on how much money Microsoft is willing to throw at it lol.

I won’t ease up on them as far as giving them my input and what I think they’re doing wrong with Reach’s settings.
