It happens every time Halo has a new iteration:
People were FLAMING Halo 2 for adding dual wielding, taking out the pistol, and nurfing weapons. Not to mention the game-breaking glitches like super-bouncing, BXR, and people stealing host in matchmaking. Lets not forget about the n00b combo. Halo lost a LOT of fans. Many said it took no skill because of things like the n00b combo. But it also GAINED a lot of fans then. People grew to love Halo 2 for being Halo 2. What people forget is that the boards were COVERED in disapproving threads, though, fighting between Halo 1 and 2.
People FLAMED Halo 3 for adding items, an overpowered BR, no good maps, getting rid of the 1-50 ranking system, etc. A LOT of people left Halo at this point. Halo 1 purists continued to complain that the BR stuck around instead of the pistol. But a LOT of people started playing Halo because of Halo 3. Still, the boards, again, were COVERED in disapproving threads.
Halo Reach: people HATED the armor abilities and and bloom. Rightly so in many cases, but these problems were no greater than things like the n00b combo in the past. Still, many people praised the Pistol coming back and rejoiced that dual wielding was gone, which had caused a bunch of half-weapons. While a lot oh Halo fans stopped playing this, it gained a lot of fans. Granted, they were more casual fans, but it did draw in additional fans. Like every new iteration, the crowd changed. To be sure, it was not as many fans as before. However, it must be factored in that, at this point, Halo finally had a lot of competition with other titles, whereas there weren’t as many good FPSs for XBox during the days of Halo 1/2, and CoD was just surfacing at the time of Halo 3.
Now we come to Halo 4. A lot of people will leave Halo because of it. But, again, many will join and it will become Halo to them. What many people don’t realize is that people who say “Halo 3 is true Halo” have many people who disagree with them who were fans of Halo 1 and 2. Let Halo 4 be its own game. Its going to change a lot of things, but life will go on.
